Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind the Smile

The next morning, my name was everywhere.

Not in the way I wanted.

I woke up to dozens of notifications on my phone.

My hands were shaking before I even opened the first article.

LOCAL WAITRESS ATTACKS SOCIALITE DURING CHARITY EVENT.

I stared at the headline.

Then I watched the video.

Or what they wanted people to believe was the video.

The clip showed my hand grabbing Victoria’s wrist.

It showed Victoria stumbling backward.

It did not show her raising her hand.

It did not show Isabella trembling.

It did not show me stopping something worse.

My apartment suddenly felt too quiet.

I lived in a small building on the west side, the kind where neighbors knew when someone’s pipes broke because they could hear everything.

My father was asleep in the next room.

His hospital equipment hummed softly.

I looked at the bills stacked beside the kitchen table.

Then I looked at my phone again.

The comments were brutal.

“She attacked a woman who was trying to help.””

“People like her want attention.””

“She should be arrested.””

People who knew nothing about me had already decided who I was.

A knock came at my door.

I froze.

Then I opened it.

My younger sister Lily stood there with coffee.

“You’re trending.””

I sighed.

“Good morning to you too.””

She stepped inside.

“I’m serious.””

“I know.””

She looked at my face.

“Emma.””

“I’m fine.””

She gave me the look only younger sisters could give.

The one that said she knew I was lying.

“You always say that.””

I looked away.

Because I didn’t know how to tell her I was terrified.

Terrified that doing the right thing had finally cost us everything.

Later that afternoon, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

“Emma Carter?””

The voice was familiar.

“Mr. Moretti?””

“Yes.””

I sat up.

“What happened?””

“I need to meet with you.””

My heart tightened.

“Is this about the video?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Now.””

I met Vincent at a private office downtown.

I had never been inside a place like that.

Glass walls.

Perfect furniture.

A view of Chicago that made the entire city look small.

Vincent stood by the window.

“You watched the video.””

“Yes.””

“What did you notice?””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Watch it again.””

He placed the tablet in front of me.

I did.

Then I understood.

“The angle.””

Vincent nodded.

“The camera recording that was released was from the side.””

“So?””

“So the ballroom had fourteen cameras.””

I looked at him.

“Someone chose the one that made me look guilty.””

“Exactly.””

He opened another file.

Security footage.

Different angle.

Different truth.

There it was.

Victoria’s raised hand.

Isabella’s frightened expression.

My movement.

Everything.

“She knows this exists,” Vincent said.

“Then why hasn’t she released it?””

“Because she doesn’t need to.””

I looked at him.

“She wants people to believe the lie first.””

Vincent nodded.

“She has spent years building influence. She knows perception matters more than facts.””

I looked down.

“So what now?””

“Now we find out why she attacked my mother.””

I hesitated.

“Why do you think she did?””

Vincent didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he opened another document.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

“My mother’s financial records.””

I looked confused.

“Why am I seeing this?””

“Because Victoria believes my mother has something.””

“What?””

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Before he could answer, the office door opened.

His assistant rushed in.

“Mr. Moretti.””

Vincent turned.

“What?””

The assistant looked nervous.

“Someone accessed Isabella Moretti’s private files last night.””

The room went still.

“When?””

“An hour after the gala.””

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

The assistant hesitated.

Then handed him a folder.

Vincent opened it.

I watched his face change.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I met him, Vincent Moretti looked genuinely shocked.

“The person who accessed the files…”

He stopped.

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Vincent slowly turned the folder around.

There was a name printed on the page.

A name I recognized.

May you like

A name that made no sense.

Because it belonged to someone who should have been on our side.
