Chapter 4: The Truth My Mother Hid

My mother spent three days in the hospital before she was strong enough to talk.

Three days of doctors checking her.

Three days of police interviews.

Three days of everyone asking the same question.

Why?

Why would Richard Parker try to bury his own wife alive?

The answer seemed obvious.

But when my mother finally held my hand and whispered the truth…

I realized the story was much bigger than I imagined.

I sat beside her hospital bed while sunlight entered through the window.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Fragile.

But her eyes were still the same.

The same eyes that had watched over me every night.

“Mom?””

She squeezed my fingers.

“I’m sorry.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“For not telling you the truth sooner.””

I looked down.

“I don’t understand.””

She took a slow breath.

“Richard didn’t want me gone because he hated me.””

“Then why?””

She looked toward the closed hospital door.

“Because I found something.””

A chill ran through me.

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then she reached toward the drawer beside her bed and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found documents.””

Inside were copies of financial records.

Names.

Numbers.

Transactions.

I didn’t understand everything.

But I understood one thing.

Richard had been stealing money.

A lot of money.

From my mother’s company.

“He found out I knew,” Claire whispered.

“So he tried to kill you?””

She closed her eyes.

“He tried to make it look like an accident.””

The room felt colder.

“But how?””

My mother looked at me.

“Richard gave me medication.””

My stomach turned.

“The doctors said my heart stopped.””

She nodded.

“It wasn’t supposed to be permanent. He thought it would give him enough time.””

Enough time.

For a funeral.

For a burial.

For everyone to believe she was gone.

I looked at the envelope.

Then I remembered Richard’s warning.

Ask your mother why she was really in that coffin.

He wasn’t trying to expose her.

He was trying to scare me.

Because he knew something else.

“Mom…”

She looked at me.

“Did Richard have someone helping him?””

Her face changed.

That was the answer.

Before she could speak, someone knocked.

A police officer entered.

“Mrs. Parker, there’s something you need to see.””

My mother sat up slightly.

“What is it?””

The officer placed a folder on the table.

“We searched Richard’s house.””

My mother looked nervous.

“What did you find?””

The officer opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Richard standing beside another person.

A person I recognized immediately.

My hands went cold.

Because the person standing next to Richard…

was someone who had cried beside my mother’s coffin.

Someone who had told everyone how much they loved Claire.

The officer looked at my mother.

“We believe this person helped arrange everything.””

My mother stared at the picture.

Then she whispered a name.

A name I never expected to hear.

“Your father.””

I stopped breathing.

My father had been dead for years.

At least…

that was what I had always been told.

And suddenly, the biggest lie in my life wasn’t about my mother’s death.

It was about who was still alive.
