Chapter 3: The Woman Who Was Buried Alive

The world moved strangely after I saw my mother’s eyes.

Everything became quiet.

The screaming.

The crying.

The rain outside.

All of it disappeared.

There was only my mother.

Alive.

Trapped.

Afraid.

“Mom…”

The word barely left my mouth.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

She tried to move.

Tried to reach toward me.

But the coffin was too tight.

The room exploded into chaos again.

A man near the back rushed forward.

Richard turned the gun toward him.

“I said stay back!””

The man stopped.

Nobody wanted to test whether Richard would actually pull the trigger.

I looked at Richard.

“How long?””

His jaw tightened.

“What?””

“How long was she in there?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

My mother had been inside that coffin while people arranged flowers.

While people wrote sympathy cards.

While everyone cried over a woman who was still breathing.

I felt sick.

Richard looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I laughed once.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

It was because I couldn’t believe him.

“You put my mom in a box.””

His eyes hardened.

“You’re a child.””

“And you’re a monster.””

The word hung in the air.

Richard’s face twisted.

For years, I had seen him as strict.

Cold sometimes.

Distant.

But still family.

Now I understood.

He wasn’t someone who failed to save my mother.

He was someone who tried to erase her.

My aunt stepped forward carefully.

“Richard, put the gun down.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t know anything.””

“No,” she said.

“But I know Claire. And I know she would never want this.””

His grip tightened.

“Claire made mistakes.””

My mother suddenly moved violently inside the coffin.

A muffled sound came from behind the tape.

Richard looked at her.

And something about that look terrified me.

It wasn’t anger.

It was hatred.

Like he was angry she had survived.

I grabbed the hammer again.

Richard pointed the gun toward me.

“Don’t.””

I froze.

Then my mother did something unexpected.

She lifted her hand.

Weakly.

Slowly.

And tapped.

Against the inside of the coffin.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

My chest tightened.

Even now.

Even trapped.

She was telling me the same thing.

I love you.

I lowered the hammer.

And I whispered:

“I love you too, Mom.””

Something changed in the room.

People stopped seeing a grieving child.

They saw the truth.

Richard saw it too.

He had lost control.

A man in the audience suddenly pulled out his phone.

“I already called the police.””

Richard looked toward him.

“You shouldn’t have done that.””

The man swallowed.

“You’re not getting away with this.””

Richard backed toward the coffin.

I noticed something then.

His attention wasn’t on escaping.

It was on the broken lid.

On my mother.

On something hidden beneath her.

“What are you afraid we’ll find?”” I asked.

Richard didn’t answer.

But his silence told me there was something else.

Something bigger.

The police arrived minutes later.

Those minutes felt like hours.

Officers entered with weapons raised.

Richard finally dropped his gun.

He was taken away from the coffin.

The first thing the officers did was remove the tape from my mother’s mouth.

Claire gasped for air.

Then she looked at me.

And despite everything she had suffered…

She smiled.

“My baby.””

I fell apart.

I climbed beside the coffin and held her hand.

Her fingers were cold.

But they were real.

She was real.

Later, doctors rushed her to the hospital.

Everyone told me I was brave.

They called me a hero.

But I didn’t feel like one.

I only felt like a son who heard his mother asking for help.

And refused to ignore her.

But before the police took Richard away, he looked at me.

Not with anger.

With a strange kind of warning.

“Ethan.””

I stopped.

Richard leaned closer.

“You think you saved her.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

His eyes moved toward the officers.

Then back to me.

“Ask your mother why she was really in that coffin.””

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because for the first time…

I wondered if Richard’s secret wasn’t the only secret waiting to be uncovered.
