Chapter 8: The Last Piece of Evidence

Thomas stared at Maya.

The confidence disappeared from his face.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

A man who controlled people.

A man who erased lives.

A man who believed nothing could touch him.

Was afraid of a ten-year-old girl.

“What did you do?”” Thomas asked.

Maya didn’t move.

She simply reached into her jacket.

And pulled out a small memory card.

Michael smiled.

“That’s what you were looking for.””

Thomas’s jaw tightened.

“You had the evidence all along?””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Maya.

“She did.””

I stared.

Maya?

Michael explained.

“When Anna realized Thomas was after her, she didn’t trust computers. She didn’t trust phones. She trusted Maya.””

Rachel wiped her tears.

“She taught her where to hide things.””

Maya touched her chest.

Then pointed toward the memory card.

Her mother.

A final message.

Thomas stepped forward.

Officer Mason blocked him.

“You’re done.””

Thomas looked at Mason.

And laughed.

“You really think you’re the hero now?””

Mason didn’t respond.

Thomas smiled.

“You followed orders for years.””

Mason’s face hardened.

“But I stopped.””

“Too late.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Too many people had waited too long.

Too many people had been afraid.

Thomas turned toward me.

“Daniel, you think you’re different?””

I stared at him.

“You owned my brother’s silence. You destroyed my family.””

Thomas tilted his head.

“No.””

He looked at Maya.

“She destroyed herself.””

Everyone froze.

I stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas smiled.

“Ask her.””

I looked at Maya.

She looked terrified.

Not of Thomas.

Of the memory.

I knelt beside her.

“Maya?””

Her hands shook.

Slowly, she signed.

A confession.

Something nobody expected.

Something she had carried alone.

I watched her hands.

And my heart broke.

“She was there.””

Rachel whispered.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“Maya was there the night Anna disappeared.””

Everyone stared.

Maya cried silently.

“She saw everything.””

Michael nodded.

“She was the reason Anna was able to hide the evidence.””

Thomas smiled.

“But she also saw something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“The person who helped me.””

The room went silent.

Everyone looked around.

Carl.

Officer Mason.

Rachel.

Then Maya pointed.

Not at Thomas.

Not at Mason.

Not at Carl.

At someone else.

Someone standing near the doorway.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been with us from the beginning.

Emily.

The waitress.

My stomach dropped.

Emily’s face changed.

The kindness disappeared.

The gentle smile.

The concerned eyes.

Gone.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

I couldn’t speak.

Emily slowly stepped forward.

“I never wanted it to go this far.””

Maya backed away.

Michael looked shocked.

“You.””

Emily sighed.

“Anna was my sister.””

Rachel froze.

“What?””

Emily looked at Maya.

“I was there.””

My mind struggled to understand.

“What are you saying?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Thomas didn’t kill Anna alone.””

She looked at Maya.

“And neither did I.””

The room went completely silent.

Maya’s face went pale.

Because she understood before anyone else.

She signed one sentence.

One sentence that made everyone turn toward Emily.

“You were the one who opened the door.””

Emily closed her eyes.

And for the first time…

She looked truly sorry.

But then the lights went out.

A scream echoed through the tunnel.

When the emergency lights came back on…

Emily was gone.

And so was the memory card.

Thomas looked at the empty doorway.

Then smiled.

Because he wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.

He looked at me.

“You still don’t know the worst part.””

I stared at him.

“What now?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Your brother didn’t disappear because of what he found.””

He pointed toward the empty tunnel.

“He disappeared because of what he did.””

Michael’s face went white.

May you like

And I realized…

There was still one truth nobody had told me.
