Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Empire

The room went dark.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound was our breathing.

Fast.

Uneven.

Afraid.

Then Emily whispered:

“Are we trapped?””

I looked at the metal door.

The answer was obvious.

“Yes.””

Maya immediately began searching the walls.

Not panicking.

Looking.

Thinking.

She had survived because she noticed things other people ignored.

That was what people never understood about her.

Silence didn’t mean weakness.

Maya saw more than most people ever did.

I turned to Carl.

“You know another way out.””

He looked at me.

“No.””

“You do.””

He stayed quiet.

“Carl.””

His shoulders dropped.

“There’s a tunnel.””

Everyone stared.

“A tunnel?””

He nodded.

“Thomas built it years ago.””

“Why?””

Carl looked ashamed.

“Because people like him always need a way to leave.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“Show me.””

He hesitated.

Then pointed behind the shelves.

We moved quickly.

Behind a stack of old boxes was another hidden panel.

Carl opened it.

A narrow passage stretched into darkness.

The smell hit me first.

Cold concrete.

Old moisture.

And something else.

Fear.

We moved through the tunnel.

Nobody spoke.

After several minutes, Rachel whispered:

“Why did Thomas let us find the room?””

I stopped.

Because she was right.

A man like Thomas didn’t make careless mistakes.

“He wanted us to find something.””

Carl looked at me.

“Or someone.””

My stomach tightened.

We kept walking.

The tunnel eventually opened into another room.

And there he was.

Michael.

Alive.

Sitting against the wall.

For one second, my mind refused to accept it.

Then he looked up.

“Daniel.””

I ran.

I didn’t care about anything else.

Not Thomas.

Not the police.

Not the danger.

My brother was alive.

I grabbed him.

And for the first time in six months, I cried.

“You’re alive.””

Michael held onto me.

“I’m sorry.””

“You’re alive.””

“I’m sorry.””

I pulled back.

“What happened?””

His face was thinner.

Older.

Like six months had aged him years.

“I found out too much.””

I looked around.

“You were hiding here?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I was being kept here.””

My blood went cold.

“By Thomas?””

Michael nodded.

“He wanted the evidence.””

“The flash drive?””

“The documents. The names. Everything.””

Maya ran to him.

Michael smiled through tears.

“You did exactly what I told you.””

Maya hugged him.

I stared.

“You knew she would find me?””

Michael looked at her.

“I knew she would survive.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Anna would be proud.””

Michael’s expression changed.

Pain.

Deep pain.

“What about Anna?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at me.

“She didn’t leave.””

I already knew.

But hearing it hurt.

“She was killed.””

The words destroyed the room.

Maya covered her mouth.

Rachel closed her eyes.

Michael continued.

“She found the first evidence against Thomas. She tried to expose him.””

“And Thomas?””

Michael nodded.

“He made sure nobody believed her.””

I looked at Maya.

A ten-year-old girl who had lost everything.

But still ran toward the truth.

A sound echoed from the tunnel.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Michael’s face changed.

“He found us.””

The lights turned on.

Thomas Reed stood at the entrance.

No weapon.

No fear.

Just that same calm smile.

“Family reunions are always emotional.””

I stepped in front of Maya.

Thomas looked amused.

“You really are your brother’s brother.””

Michael stood.

“You won’t get away with this.””

Thomas laughed softly.

“Michael, you’ve been saying that for six months.””

He looked at me.

“You know what your problem is, Daniel?””

I said nothing.

“You think the truth automatically wins.””

He walked closer.

“It doesn’t.””

The police sirens sounded outside.

Thomas didn’t react.

That scared me more than anything.

Because he wasn’t surprised.

“You called them,” I said.

Thomas smiled.

“No.””

He looked at Officer Mason.

Who was standing behind him.

My stomach dropped.

Mason lowered his eyes.

I understood.

Not everyone was afraid of Thomas.

Some people worked for him.

Thomas turned back to me.

“You brought me everything I needed.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He pointed toward Maya’s backpack.

“The notebook.””

My blood froze.

Maya looked down.

The notebook.

The evidence.

The one thing Thomas had wanted from the beginning.

But then Michael smiled.

A small smile.

A confident smile.

Thomas noticed.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

Then at Maya.

“She never had the real notebook.””

Thomas’s smile disappeared.

May you like

For the first time…

The monster looked afraid.
