Chapter 9: The Heir Without a Name

The document remained unopened.

Nobody wanted to touch it.

Not because they were afraid of what it contained.

Because they already knew it would change everything.

Again.

Henry looked at Robert.

“You know the name.””

Robert didn’t answer.

“Robert.””

The old servant closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Say it.””

Robert looked at the document.

Then whispered:

“Evelyn Whitmore.””

Lily frowned.

“Who is that?””

Robert looked at her.

“Richard’s first child.””

James stared.

“My father had a daughter?””

“Yes.””

Henry shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Robert looked at him.

“You have said that many times.””

Henry ignored the comment.

“Why was she hidden?””

The woman standing nearby answered.

“Because Richard was ashamed.””

Everyone looked at her.

She introduced herself quietly.

“My name is Clara Bennett.””

Henry recognized the name.

Margaret’s younger sister.

The one who disappeared after a family argument decades ago.

“You knew Evelyn?””

Clara nodded.

“I raised her.””

Henry froze.

“What?””

“After Richard abandoned her.””

The room became silent.

Clara continued.

“Evelyn was born before Richard married into the Whitmore family. Her mother was someone he wanted to forget.””

James looked at the floor.

“So he erased another child.””

“Yes.””

Lily looked horrified.

“How many people did he destroy?””

Clara answered:

“Everyone who reminded him he wasn’t perfect.””

Henry looked at the document.

“What does Evelyn want?””

Clara’s expression darkened.

“Everything.””

James frowned.

“Everything?””

“The company. The fortune. The name.””

Henry laughed bitterly.

“After all this time?””

Clara nodded.

“Evelyn believes the Whitmore empire belongs to her.””

Daniel looked concerned.

“Where is she?””

Clara looked toward the window.

“Closer than you think.””

A phone vibrated.

Everyone turned.

It was Henry’s.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

*You finally found the family tree.*

Another message appeared.

*Now look at the roots.*

Then a photograph loaded.

Henry stared.

It showed the mansion.

Taken minutes earlier.

From inside.

Someone had been watching them.

James looked around.

“She’s here.””

Henry immediately signaled security.

But nobody answered.

The guards.

The employees.

Everyone.

Gone.

Clara spoke quietly.

“She planned this.””

Henry looked at her.

“You knew she would come.””

Clara nodded.

“She always does.””

James stepped forward.

“Then why bring us here?””

Clara looked at him.

“Because Margaret wanted you to know the truth before Evelyn told you her version.””

Henry frowned.

“Margaret knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she warn us?””

Clara looked toward the broken wall.

“She tried.””

Henry remembered the letter.

The warnings.

The clues.

Everything had been carefully arranged.

Margaret knew she might not survive long enough.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Everyone turned.

A woman entered.

She looked to be in her fifties.

Elegant.

Controlled.

The kind of person who never needed to raise her voice.

She looked at Henry.

“Hello, Uncle.””

Nobody moved.

Henry stared.

“Evelyn.””

She smiled.

“So you do know my name.””

James stepped forward.

“You destroyed this family.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.””

She smiled slightly.

“Your father did that.””

James clenched his fists.

“You manipulated everything.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I revealed everything.””

Henry watched her carefully.

“You sent the messages.””

“Yes.””

“You searched Margaret’s room.””

“Yes.””

“You threatened my family.””

Evelyn tilted her head.

“No.””

She looked around the mansion.

“I reminded them that secrets have consequences.””

Lily stepped forward.

“You wanted me gone.””

Evelyn looked at her.

For a moment, something almost like sadness appeared.

“You were lucky.””

Lily frowned.

“Lucky?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked at Henry.

“Richard loved you more than he loved me.””

The sentence shocked everyone.

Henry said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“He gave you the name.””

She looked at James.

“He gave you the position.””

Then Lily.

“He gave you the protection.””

Her voice hardened.

“But I got nothing.””

Henry stared.

“So you destroyed everyone.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

She walked toward the table.

“I collected what was mine.””

She picked up the document.

“The Whitmore empire was built from stolen lives.””

She looked at Henry.

“I’m just taking back what belongs to me.””

Henry stepped closer.

“You think money fixes what happened?””

Evelyn smiled.

“No.””

A pause.

“I think the truth does.””

She opened the document.

Inside was another page.

She placed it down.

Henry read it.

And immediately felt sick.

Because the signature at the bottom belonged to Margaret.

James looked over his shoulder.

“What is it?””

Henry couldn’t speak.

Lily read it.

Then whispered:

“No…”

James grabbed the paper.

His face changed.

“What?””

He looked at Henry.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

Because the document proved something impossible.

Margaret had not been investigating Richard.

She had been protecting someone else.

And the person she protected…

was Evelyn.

Clara stepped back.

“I knew this day would come.””

Henry looked at her.

“Why?””

Clara’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because Margaret knew the truth.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“She knew Evelyn wasn’t the enemy.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked hurt.

Henry stared.

“Then who is?””

A voice came from behind them.

A familiar voice.

A voice nobody expected.

“Me.””

Everyone turned.

Robert stood in the doorway.

But he was no longer afraid.

He was holding a gun.

And in his other hand…

was Margaret’s missing jewelry box.

May you like

Inside it was the final piece of evidence.

The truth Margaret had died trying to protect.
