Chapter 8: Margaret’s Final Choice
Nobody spoke after Robert’s confession.
The mansion had always been full of secrets.
But this was different.
This was the moment when every person in the room realized they had never been searching for one hidden truth.
They had been searching through layers of them.
Henry looked at Robert.
“You’re saying Margaret was right not to trust you.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
James’ expression hardened.
“Then explain.””
Robert looked exhausted.
“I lied to her.””
Henry’s voice became cold.
“About what?””
Robert stared at the floor.
“About Richard.””
Nobody moved.
“Richard did not act alone.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“We know.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at them.
“You don’t.””
The confidence in his voice made everyone listen.
“There was someone above Richard.””
Henry frowned.
“Above Richard?””
Robert nodded.
“Someone who financed him.””
Lily looked confused.
“My grandfather worked for someone?””
Robert looked at her.
“Your grandfather thought he was the smartest person in every room.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“He wasn’t.””
Henry walked toward the desk.
“Who was it?””
Robert hesitated.
Then said:
“The Whitmore family had partners nobody knew about.””
James frowned.
“Partners?””
“Investors.””
Henry shook his head.
“My father controlled everything.””
Robert looked at him.
“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””
The sentence hit Henry harder than expected.
Richard had spent decades building an image of absolute power.
But what if even that was a lie?
Robert continued.
“There was a private group that funded Richard’s expansion.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You mean the Meridian Group.””
Robert looked at him.
“You know them.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I heard rumors.””
Henry turned.
“What is the Meridian Group?””
Nobody answered immediately.
That worried him.
Finally Daniel said:
“People who make problems disappear.””
Lily looked at Robert.
“And they wanted me gone.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
James looked furious.
“My daughter was a threat to investors?””
Robert looked at him.
“No.””
He paused.
“She was a threat to their control.””
Henry stared.
“Why?””
Robert looked toward Margaret’s destroyed room.
“Because Margaret found evidence.””
The answer came quietly.
“She discovered Richard was not just stealing companies.””
Henry felt his chest tighten.
“What else?””
Robert looked at him.
“He was selling information.””
A silence.
“Business secrets.””
Daniel whispered.
“Industrial espionage.””
Robert nodded.
“Exactly.””
Henry closed his eyes.
His father.
The man he admired.
The man whose portrait hung over every company building.
A criminal.
A fraud.
A traitor.
Lily stepped forward.
“And Grandma found out.””
“Yes.””
“What did she do?””
Robert looked at her.
“She tried to expose him.””
James shook his head.
“But she died.””
Robert’s silence answered.
Henry immediately noticed.
“You think she was murdered.””
Robert looked at him.
“I think Margaret knew she was running out of time.””
A sudden sound came from outside.
Security alarms.
Everyone turned.
A guard rushed inside.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Henry looked up.
“What happened?””
“The front gate was opened.””
“By who?””
The guard hesitated.
“Someone used an authorized code.””
Henry’s expression changed.
“Whose?””
The guard swallowed.
“Yours.””
Nobody spoke.
Henry’s code.
Impossible.
Unless someone knew it.
Unless someone close had access.
Robert whispered:
“They’re inside.””
The lights suddenly went out.
The mansion disappeared into darkness.
Someone screamed downstairs.
Henry reached for his phone.
No signal.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“Henry.””
Everyone froze.
A figure stood near the staircase.
A woman.
Older.
Calm.
Holding a small box.
Henry stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman smiled.
“You don’t recognize me.””
She walked into the light from the emergency lamps.
Henry felt the blood leave his face.
Because he did recognize her.
A photograph.
A name.
A memory from twenty-five years ago.
“Margaret’s sister?””
The woman smiled.
“Yes.””
Lily looked shocked.
“You were supposed to be dead.””
The woman looked at her.
“So was I.””
Henry stared.
“Why are you here?””
The woman lifted the box.
“Because Margaret left this for me.””
James looked confused.
“Why would she leave something to you?””
The woman looked at him.
“Because I was the only person who knew the truth before Margaret did.””
Henry stepped closer.
“What truth?””
The woman opened the box.
Inside was a wedding ring.
Richard’s.
And beneath it…
A blood-stained document.
The woman whispered:
“Richard Whitmore had another child.””
Nobody moved.
James stared.
“Another child?””
The woman nodded.
“And that child is the reason your family was destroyed.””
Henry looked at Lily.
Then James.
Then the document.
The woman placed it on the table.
A name was written across the top.
A name Henry had never heard before.
But Robert recognized it.
And when he saw it, he whispered:
“No…”
Henry looked at him.
“Who is it?””
May you like
Robert’s face turned pale.
“The person who has been controlling everything.””
