Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Lies
I stared at the name on my mother’s letter until the letters blurred.
I read it once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Each time, I hoped my eyes had misunderstood.
They hadn’t.
The name was still there.
The person who had been hidden from me.
The person who had connected every secret.
The person who had started a chain of lies that reached into my marriage, my pregnancy, and my entire identity.
“Emma,” Cole said quietly.
I looked up.
“Say it.””
He swallowed.
“I can’t.””
“Say the name.””
His face tightened.
“Your uncle.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Cole looked at the letter again.
“It’s my uncle’s name.””
The coffee shop suddenly felt too loud.
The sound of cups.
The sound of conversations.
The sound of people living normal lives while mine kept falling apart.
“My baby’s father is your uncle?””
Cole shook his head.
“No.””
“But the letter says—”
“I know.””
He grabbed the paper carefully.
“Look at the wording.””
I looked.
My father’s handwriting was messy.
Old.
But clear enough.
Emma,
If you are reading this, it means Darla finally told you the truth.
I know who your baby’s father is.
And I know why he was chosen.
My fingers froze.
“Chosen?””
Cole nodded.
“That’s not an accident.””
I looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
He turned the page over.
There was another paragraph.
A paragraph I hadn’t noticed.
My daughter is not the result of love.
She is the result of a plan.
My breath caught.
“No.””
Cole’s expression hardened.
“Someone planned this.””
I pushed away from the table.
“No.””
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stood.
“I’m done.””
People turned toward us.
I didn’t care.
“I’m done being a person in everyone else’s story.””
Cole stood too.
“You’re not.””
“Really?””
My voice cracked.
“Because my mother decided what I should know. You decided what I should know. Everyone keeps moving pieces around my life like I’m some kind of game.””
His face fell.
“You’re right.””
I hated that he didn’t argue.
I hated that he accepted it.
Because it made me even more exhausted.
“What does the letter say?””
Cole looked down.
“It says your father discovered someone was trying to recreate a family connection.””
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
“You always say that.””
“I’m trying to find out.””
I stared at him.
“Who knew about my pregnancy?””
He hesitated.
That was enough.
“Cole.””
“Your mother.””
“Who else?””
He looked away.
“Your doctor.””
My stomach dropped.
“My doctor?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I found emails.””
“What emails?””
“Between your mother and Dr. Bennett.””
I grabbed my purse.
“Take me there.””
The doctor’s office smelled exactly the same.
The same lavender air freshener.
The same magazines in the waiting room.
The same framed pictures of smiling babies.
Except now I looked at every picture differently.
Because I wondered how many mothers sitting there knew the truth about their own lives.
Dr. Bennett looked nervous when we entered.
That told me everything.
She knew.
“Emma.””
I closed the door behind me.
“Tell me why my mother was emailing you.””
Her face changed.
“I was hoping we could talk calmly.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“No more calm conversations.””
Cole stood beside me.
Dr. Bennett looked at him.
“You brought him?””
“I brought the person who was also lied to.””
She sighed.
“I never wanted this.””
“Everyone says that.””
I stepped closer.
“But somehow everyone still does it.””
She looked down.
“Your mother came to me because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That the truth would come out.””
“What truth?””
She hesitated.
Then opened a drawer.
She pulled out a file.
“This.””
I took it.
Inside were medical records.
Genetic reports.
And a date.
My pregnancy date.
I looked up.
“You tested my baby without my permission?””
Dr. Bennett shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what is this?””
“Your mother provided information.””
“What information?””
She looked at me.
“About the man who was supposed to be the father.””
My heart raced.
“Cole?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
The room went silent.
“Then who?””
Dr. Bennett’s voice became softer.
“Emma, your mother believed Cole’s uncle was your baby’s father.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“Because of genetic markers.””
Cole stepped forward.
“But my uncle is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Dr. Bennett looked at him.
“Because someone used his stored DNA.””
The room went cold.
“What?””
She nodded.
“Years ago, your mother and Thomas’s family participated in a medical research program.””
Cole looked confused.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“And someone accessed the records.””
Dr. Bennett looked at me.
“Your mother believed someone was trying to create a child connected to both families.””
I felt dizzy.
“A child connected to both families?””
She nodded.
“Someone wanted control.””
“Who?””
Dr. Bennett looked at the floor.
Then whispered:
“The person who arranged your marriage.””
I looked at Cole.
His face had gone completely white.
“What?””
Dr. Bennett opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A contract.
And a signature.
Cole recognized it immediately.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
His voice barely came out.
“My mother.””
I stared.
His mother.
The woman I had met twice.
The woman who always seemed distant.
The woman who never attended family events.
“She did this?””
Cole looked devastated.
“I thought she hated your mother.””
Dr. Bennett shook her head.
“She didn’t hate her.””
“Then what?””
The doctor looked at me.
“She blamed her.””
“For what?””
Dr. Bennett placed another document on the desk.
A confession.
A handwritten confession.
Cole picked it up.
His hands trembled.
Then his expression changed.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Horror.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“My mother knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That I wasn’t marrying you by accident.””
I stared.
“She chose me?””
He nodded slowly.
“She knew our families were connected.””
The room spun.
The truth was finally appearing.
But somehow, it was worse than the lies.
Because the lies had been random.
This was planned.
A life built around a decision someone else made.
Then Cole whispered the sentence that broke everything.
“My mother didn’t want me to marry you.””
I looked at him.
“Then what did she want?””
May you like
He looked at the confession.
“She wanted your baby.””
