Chapter 3: The Test That Changed Everything

I didn’t open the envelope immediately.

I couldn’t.

Sometimes the body protects you from pain by slowing everything down.

My fingers held the paper.

My eyes saw the words.

But my mind refused to connect them.

Paternity test.

Why would my mother have a paternity test?

Why would there be a reason for me to see one at all?

“Emma,” Darla whispered.

I looked at her.

“Who is it?””

She wiped her face.

“What?””

“Whose test is this?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Mom.””

She sat down on the outdoor chair.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

“There is no right way to find out your mother has secret DNA tests.””

She looked toward the house.

The laughter inside sounded distant.

“My whole life, I thought you were my daughter.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You are my daughter.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Her hands shook.

“When you were born, there was a mistake.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“A mistake?””

She nodded.

“Something happened at the hospital.””

I stared at her.

“What kind of mistake?””

Before she could answer, the back door opened.

Cole stepped outside.

His face changed when he saw the envelope in my hand.

“You told her?””

Darla stood.

“You left me no choice.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

Cole said nothing.

That silence was louder than any confession.

“You knew.””

He looked away.

“Emma, listen—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No more listening. No more explanations. I have spent years listening to everyone except myself.””

Cole stepped closer.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He stopped.

“When?””

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t know.””

“Exactly.””

I held up the envelope.

“Did you know about this?””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

But it destroyed me.

“How long?””

“Six months.””

Six months.

I touched my stomach.

Six months.

While I was pregnant.

While I was decorating the nursery.

While I was choosing names.

He knew.

“How?””

Cole looked at my mother.

Darla looked away.

That was when anger replaced confusion.

“You two have been having secret conversations for six months?””

“No,” Cole said quickly.

“Then explain.””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“Your mother contacted me.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Why?””

Cole looked at me.

“Because she found out something about my family.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My family?””

“No. Mine.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me there was another layer.

Another hidden room.

Another locked door.

“I found out my father wasn’t my biological father.””

The words landed slowly.

“What?””

“My parents hid it from me.””

I looked between him and my mother.

“So what does that have to do with this?””

Cole swallowed.

“Your mother knew.””

I turned.

“Mom?””

Darla’s face crumpled.

“I found out years ago.””

My heart pounded.

“Found out what?””

She looked at me.

“You and Cole…”

She couldn’t finish.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

The world tilted.

I looked at my husband.

The man who had promised forever.

The man who had kissed my mother.

The man who had kept secrets about my own identity.

“Are you saying we’re related?””

Cole immediately shook his head.

“No.””

The answer came so fast that I believed him for half a second.

Then I remembered.

He had lied before.

“What am I supposed to believe?””

“That I love you.””

The words made me angry.

“Don’t say that.””

“But I do.””

“You don’t get to use love as proof anymore.””

He went quiet.

My mother stepped forward.

“Emma, please. Let me explain everything.””

“Start with the truth.””

She nodded.

“When you were born, there was another baby in the hospital.””

I froze.

“What?””

“A baby mix-up.””

My hand covered my mouth.

“Mom…”

“You were taken home by the wrong family for three days.””

The backyard suddenly felt unreal.

“Three days?””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“We discovered the mistake.””

I stared at her.

“So I’m your daughter.””

“Yes.””

“Then why the paternity test?””

Darla looked at Cole.

Cole looked at the ground.

And I knew.

I knew before anyone said it.

“No.””

Darla whispered:

“Your biological father was not the man who raised you.””

The fairy lights above us blurred.

“Who was he?””

No one answered.

“Who was he?””

My voice became louder.

Finally, my mother said:

“Your biological father was Cole’s father.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The words didn’t make sense.

They couldn’t.

My husband’s father.

My father.

The same man.

Impossible.

Cole stepped forward.

“Emma, we found out after we were already married.””

I stared at him.

“You married me without knowing?””

“Yes.””

“And then you found out?””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed?””

His eyes filled.

“I loved you.””

I backed away.

“You should have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“You were afraid?””

I pointed toward the house.

“Do you know what I was afraid of?””

He didn’t answer.

“I was afraid of losing our baby.””

My voice shook.

“I was afraid I wouldn’t be a good mother.””

“I was afraid every day.””

“And you were afraid of telling me the truth?””

Silence.

Then I looked at my mother.

“What does the kiss have to do with this?””

Darla started crying again.

Cole looked horrified.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

My mother whispered:

“The kiss was because I found out something even worse.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She looked at Cole.

Then at me.

“Cole wasn’t just hiding the truth about his father.””

May you like

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He was hiding the truth about why he came into your life.””
