Chapter 8: The Name On The Paper

I met Cole at a quiet coffee shop the next morning.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

That was the only thing keeping me standing.

Answers.

The shop was nearly empty.

A couple sat by the window.

A man typed on his laptop.

A woman laughed at something on her phone.

Everyone lived normal lives.

I envied them.

Cole stood when I entered.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

“Thank you for coming.””

I sat across from him.

“Show me.””

No apology.

No small talk.

No pretending.

He opened a folder.

Inside was a document.

Old.

Yellowed.

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

“My father’s medical file.””

I stared at the page.

“What am I looking for?””

He pointed.

“A name.””

I read the line.

And everything inside me stopped.

“No.””

Cole watched my reaction.

“I wish I was wrong.””

I looked up.

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

The name was there.

The person everyone had forgotten.

The person no one had considered.

“My father’s brother?””

Cole nodded.

“My uncle.””

I pushed the paper away.

“No.””

“Emma.””

“My baby’s father is dead?””

Cole didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I felt sick.

“How?””

“We need another test.””

“No.””

“We do.””

“I don’t want another person telling me what my life is.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

I looked away.

“I’m tired, Cole.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You lost your family too, but you still had choices.””

He went quiet.

I continued.

“I didn’t choose any of this.””

“I know.””

“You chose revenge.””

His face fell.

“Yes.””

“You chose secrets.””

“Yes.””

“You chose my mother.””

His eyes closed.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, it hurt less than another lie.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

Hope appeared briefly in his eyes.

Then I continued:

“That doesn’t fix anything.””

The hope disappeared.

A waiter placed coffee on the table.

Neither of us touched it.

Finally, Cole said:

“There’s something else.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course there is.””

He swallowed.

“Your mother knew about my uncle.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew before the baby shower.””

“How?””

“She found the old records.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she thought it would destroy you.””

I shook my head.

“She doesn’t get to decide that.””

“No.””

“She keeps saying she protected me.””

“She was protecting herself.””

I looked at him.

“You finally understand.””

“Yes.””

For the first time, we were on the same side.

Not husband and wife.

Not lovers.

Just two people standing in the ruins of a life built on secrets.

“What happens now?””

Cole looked at the folder.

“We find out the truth.””

“And then?””

He hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

That was the first honest answer he had given me.

I looked out the window.

The rain had stopped.

“I need to ask you something.””

“Anything.””

“When you first met me…”

He looked down.

“Did you ever love me?””

The silence was long.

Painfully long.

Then he said:

“Yes.””

I stared.

“Even when you wanted revenge?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at me.

“Because I came into your life because of your mother.””

A tear formed in his eye.

“But I stayed because of you.””

I looked away.

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to hate him.

I was trapped between both.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From my mother.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the attachment.

A photo.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of a letter.

An old letter.

Written by my father.

The message underneath said:

I should have told you this years ago.

I opened the image.

The first line made my heart stop.

Emma,

If you are reading this, it means Darla finally told you the truth.

But the next sentence was the one that changed everything.

I know who your baby’s father is.

And I know why he was chosen.

I stared at the screen.

My hands started shaking.

Because beneath the letter was another name.

A name I recognized.

A name that made Cole stand up when he saw my face.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He read it.

Then he whispered:

“No…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face went pale.

“That name…”

“What about it?””

He stared at me.

“That’s the person who started all of this.””

I looked back at the screen.

And finally understood.

The betrayal had never been about one kiss.

It had never been about one secret.

May you like

Someone had been controlling our lives long before we ever met.

And now I knew who.
