Chapter 8: The Secret I Never Knew I Carried

Everyone looked at me.

Like I had become a stranger.

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

Thomas checked it again.

“I’m sorry.””

“That’s not possible.””

My voice shook.

“I’ve never accessed those files.””

My father stepped forward.

“Maya…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation made my heart sink.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

My father looked at my mother.

Then at me.

“When you were twelve…”

I felt a chill.

“When I was twelve what?””

My mother suddenly looked worried.

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“She found something.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My father looked toward the folder.

“Before Angela disappeared, she hid copies of the evidence.””

My mother nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

My father continued.

“She didn’t trust anyone.””

My eyes moved between them.

“So?””

“So she hid it somewhere only she could find.””

I felt confused.

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

Then my grandfather spoke.

“Maya’s memory.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

My mother slowly sat down.

“When you were younger, you loved puzzles.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“You memorized everything. Numbers. Patterns. Dates.””

My mother’s voice became softer.

“When I realized I might not come home, I gave you something.””

My breathing stopped.

“A necklace.””

My hand moved instinctively to my neck.

I always wore a small silver necklace.

The only thing I had from my mother.

“You said it was just a gift.””

My mother nodded.

“It wasn’t.””

She looked at Thomas.

“The necklace contained a hidden drive.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

Thomas looked surprised.

“Wait.””

He took the necklace carefully.

“May I?””

I hesitated.

Then removed it.

Thomas examined the small silver pendant.

After a few seconds, his eyes widened.

“This isn’t jewelry.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I knew it.””

My entire world shifted.

All these years.

I had carried the truth around my neck.

And nobody told me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That someone would hurt you to get it.””

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone was protecting me.””

I looked around.

“And everyone lied.””

Nobody spoke.

Thomas connected the pendant to his computer.

The room filled with silence.

A progress bar appeared.

10%.

20%.

30%.

Then—

A video file opened.

My mother’s face appeared on the screen.

But younger.

Six years earlier.

My breath caught.

She was sitting somewhere dark.

Her face looked exhausted.

But her eyes were full of love.

“Maya,” the recording began.

My knees almost gave out.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

Everyone became still.

My younger mother continued.

“I need you to know one thing first.””

She smiled sadly.

“I never left you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I never chose to walk away.””

The recording continued.

“Someone will probably tell you I abandoned you.””

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Please don’t believe them.””

Vanessa looked away.

My mother’s younger self took a breath.

“The person who caused this isn’t just one person.””

The video flickered.

“There is a group of people who have been hiding something.””

Thomas leaned closer.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“And one of them is someone Maya trusts completely.””

My heart started pounding.

The room went silent.

My younger mother looked into the camera.

“I’m sorry, Maya.””

A tear fell down her face.

“But the person who betrayed me…”

The screen glitched.

Everyone leaned forward.

Then the video froze.

A message appeared.

*FILE CORRUPTED. SECOND PART REQUIRED.*

Thomas looked confused.

“There’s another file.””

My mother whispered.

“Where?””

Thomas checked the data.

Then his expression changed.

“It’s hidden.””

“Can you open it?””

“Maybe.””

He typed quickly.

Seconds passed.

Then another message appeared.

*ENTER MEMORY KEY.*

Everyone looked confused.

“What is a memory key?”” I asked.

Thomas looked at me.

Then at the necklace.

Then at the screen.

“A password.””

“What password?””

He stared at the message.

“It says the key was created by the person who hid the evidence.””

My mother stepped closer.

“Maya.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Her eyes filled with realization.

“You created it.””

I laughed nervously.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She touched the necklace.

“You were twelve.””

I shook my head.

“I wouldn’t remember.””

My mother looked at me.

“You would.””

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Not a threat this time.

Not a warning.

A photograph.

A photograph of me.

At twelve years old.

Holding the necklace.

Standing beside someone.

Someone who had been erased from every family photo.

Someone I had forgotten completely.

Under the picture was one sentence:

*MAYA, YOU NEED TO REMEMBER WHO GAVE YOU THE PASSWORD.*

And beneath it was a name.

May you like

A name that made my mother go completely pale.

*ANGELA’S SISTER — LILY.*
