Chapter 7: The Man Who Claimed He Was Protecting Us

My grandfather didn’t deny it.

That was the first thing I noticed.

No anger.

No confusion.

No shocked expression.

Just silence.

The kind of silence people give when they know there is no excuse left.

My mother stared at him.

“Dad?””

He looked at her.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Shame.

“I can explain.””

Angela stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“You don’t get to say that.””

My grandfather looked down.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My mother laughed through tears.

“You let me lose six years with my daughter.””

“I was trying to save you.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were trying to save yourself.””

I looked at my grandfather.

The man who used to take me fishing.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who told me family was everything.

“Why?””

The word came out quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

“Why would you do that?””

My grandfather looked at me for a long time.

Then he sat down.

“I found out Richard Hale was planning to destroy all of us.””

Thomas frowned.

“Richard?””

My grandfather nodded.

“Richard wasn’t just stealing from Daniel’s company.””

He looked at my father.

“He was planning to frame him.””

My father looked confused.

“What?””

“Richard had evidence prepared. He was going to make you take the fall.””

My grandfather rubbed his face.

“I thought I could control the situation.””

My mother stared.

“So you helped create a bigger one.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

My grandfather continued.

“When Angela found the financial records, she wanted to go to the authorities.””

“She should have.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“But I knew Richard would come after her.””

My mother looked at him.

“And your solution was to make everyone think I abandoned my daughter?””

He closed his eyes.

“I thought if you disappeared, he would stop looking.””

My mother stepped closer.

“You sent me away.””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

The room felt impossible to breathe in.

My mother looked broken.

“I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You took away my choice.””

My grandfather had no answer.

Because she was right.

Thomas looked at him.

“What happened the night Angela disappeared?””

My grandfather stared at the floor.

“That night, I met Richard.””

Everyone listened.

“I tried to make a deal.””

My father whispered.

“You negotiated with him?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

My grandfather looked at Angela.

“He agreed to leave her alone.””

My mother laughed bitterly.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

My grandfather’s eyes filled.

“He attacked the car.””

A silence followed.

My heart stopped.

“The car?””

My mother looked confused.

“I thought I crashed because of the storm.””

“No.””

My grandfather shook his head.

“Richard sabotaged the brakes.””

My mother covered her mouth.

Thomas looked at her.

“You survived because someone found you.””

Angela whispered.

“Who?””

My grandfather looked at her.

“I did.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

“I found you after the crash.””

My mother stared.

“Then why didn’t you take me home?””

His face broke.

“Because you weren’t the only person Richard threatened.””

The room became quiet.

My grandfather looked at me.

“He threatened Maya.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

My grandfather’s voice shook.

“He said if Angela came back, he would hurt you.””

My mother looked horrified.

“So you made me stay away?””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe my own father turned against me.””

“I thought you would hate me.””

She stared at him.

“I do.””

The words destroyed him.

My mother walked away.

I wanted to hate my grandfather.

I did.

But I also remembered the man who carried me on his shoulders when I was six.

The man who cried at my kindergarten graduation.

The man who was now sitting in front of me, looking like he had lost everything.

Then Thomas’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed immediately.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

He walked toward the window.

“No, that’s impossible.””

My mother stood.

“What happened?””

Thomas turned around.

“The evidence file was accessed.””

“By who?””

He looked at his phone.

“The person who just logged in.””

He showed us the screen.

A name appeared.

I felt my stomach drop.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It wasn’t my grandfather.

It was someone I had trusted my entire life.
