Chapter 6: The Evidence Nobody Wanted Found
Nobody touched the folder.
It sat in the middle of the table like a weapon.
Because everyone knew opening it would change everything.
Thomas Reed looked at my father.
“Daniel, you need to tell her before she reads it.””
My father didn’t move.
“Tell me what?””
Angela’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
My father looked older than he had five minutes earlier.
“I never wanted this.””
My mother laughed softly.
“You keep saying that.””
She stepped closer.
“But somehow everything happened anyway.””
Thomas opened the folder.
Inside were copies of emails.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Documents.
Proof.
I watched my father stare at them like he already knew what every page said.
“You hired someone,” Angela whispered.
My father looked at her.
“No.””
Thomas interrupted.
“He didn’t hire someone directly.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He used an intermediary.””
My mother’s face tightened.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
My stepmother’s eyes widened.
“No.””
Thomas continued.
“The payments came from an account registered under Vanessa Brooks.””
I felt the air disappear.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas placed another document down.
“Except you signed the transfers.””
My father looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
For the first time, she looked afraid.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You said you wanted Angela gone.””
The room went completely silent.
My mother stopped breathing.
I felt my hands go cold.
My father stepped back.
“I never said that.””
“Yes, you did.””
Vanessa’s voice became desperate.
“You told me if she exposed everything, we would lose everything.””
“I meant the company.””
“You said she would destroy us.””
“I meant legally.””
Vanessa laughed.
A broken, angry laugh.
“Do you really expect anyone to believe that?””
My father looked horrified.
Because he realized what she was doing.
She wasn’t protecting him anymore.
She was saving herself.
My mother looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He couldn’t meet her eyes.
And that was the answer.
“You knew.””
He whispered.
“I knew she was planning something.””
My mother’s face fell.
“But I didn’t know she would go that far.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I looked at my father.
“You knew.””
He looked at me.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“You let me hate her.””
My father looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that!””
I screamed.
“But you were protecting everyone except me!””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
Thomas slowly closed the folder.
“There’s more.””
I looked at him.
More?
How could there be more?
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“This contains the original recordings.””
My mother frowned.
“What recordings?””
“The ones used to prove you were unstable.””
Angela froze.
“I thought those were destroyed.””
“They were altered.””
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
“You created fake evidence.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I had help.””
My heart stopped.
“From who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the front door opened again.
A woman walked in.
Older.
Elegant.
Confident.
She looked around the room.
Then smiled.
“Still gathering everyone’s secrets, I see.””
My grandfather’s face changed.
“No.””
Angela whispered.
“Evelyn.””
I looked at my mother.
“Who is that?””
My grandfather answered.
“My former wife.””
Everyone stared.
The woman smiled.
“And Daniel’s mother.””
My stomach dropped.
My grandmother.
The woman I had only met twice as a child.
The woman who disappeared from our lives years ago.
She walked closer.
“You’ve grown, Maya.””
I couldn’t speak.
She looked at Angela.
“I suppose congratulations are in order.””
My mother’s voice was cold.
“You knew.””
Evelyn tilted her head.
“Knew what?””
“You knew what happened.””
A small smile appeared.
“I knew more than anyone.””
My grandfather stepped forward.
“Evelyn, leave.””
She laughed.
“You still think you can order me around.””
Thomas looked shocked.
“You’re the missing piece.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Am I?””
He held up the flash drive.
“You were the one who modified the recordings.””
Silence.
My father stared at her.
“Mom?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You were weak, Daniel.””
The cruelty in her voice was terrifying.
“I protected you because you couldn’t protect yourself.””
My father looked devastated.
“You ruined everything.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I saved this family.””
I stared at her.
“By destroying mine?””
She smiled.
“Families require sacrifices.””
My mother moved toward her.
“You almost killed me.””
Evelyn’s expression didn’t change.
“But I didn’t.””
Thomas stepped between them.
“Mrs. Brooks, you’re going to need a lawyer.””
Evelyn laughed.
“Do you really think evidence from six years ago matters now?””
Thomas smiled slightly.
“Yes.””
He held up his phone.
“Because I recorded this entire conversation.””
Everyone froze.
Evelyn’s smile vanished.
And for the first time, she looked scared.
Then Vanessa whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“You don’t understand.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at me.
“Evelyn wasn’t the person who started this.””
My mother stared.
“Then who was?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“The person who ordered my mother to do it.””
I felt a chill.
“Your mother?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
And then she looked directly at me.
“The person who wanted Angela gone…”
May you like
She whispered.
“Was your grandfather.””
