Chapter 5: The Secret She Protected

I didn’t open the photo immediately.

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone.

A part of me wanted to throw it away.

I had spent twenty years trying to move forward.

Why did every answer come with another question?

Why did every wound seem to have another layer underneath?

But curiosity won.

I tapped the image.

My breath caught.

It was a copy of an old legal document.

A divorce agreement.

My name.

Daniel’s name.

And a section I had never seen before.

Child support obligations.

My hands started shaking.

Because underneath the agreement was a handwritten note.

Payment arrangement modified by request of Daniel Anderson.

I read it again.

Modified?

I never requested that.

I never signed anything.

I immediately called Michael.

He answered after one ring.

“Mom?””

“Michael, I need you to come over.””

His voice changed.

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

Twenty minutes later, he was sitting beside me at the kitchen table.

I showed him the photo.

His expression darkened.

“Where did you get this?””

“Chloe sent it.””

Michael frowned.

“Why would she send this?””

“I don’t know.””

He studied the document.

“Something’s wrong.””

I nodded.

“I never agreed to this.””

Michael zoomed in.

“Look.””

I leaned closer.

The signature line.

My signature.

But something felt wrong.

I knew my own handwriting.

And that wasn’t mine.

“That’s fake.””

Michael looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“I’m positive.””

My hands trembled.

“I signed hundreds of documents at the diner. Rent checks. School forms.

Medical papers. I know my signature.””

Michael sat back.

“Dad forged your signature?””

I didn’t answer.

Because saying it aloud made it real.

Daniel hadn’t just left.

He had planned his escape.

He had protected himself.

And somehow, he had made me believe I was the one who lost everything.

That afternoon, Michael insisted we meet Chloe.

I didn’t want to.

But he reminded me of something.

“We need answers.””

So we met at a quiet coffee shop downtown.

Chloe arrived ten minutes late.

She wore sunglasses and looked around before sitting down.

“You came.””

Michael stared at her.

“You sent the message.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Chloe removed her sunglasses.

For the first time, she didn’t look arrogant.

She looked tired.

“I know you hate me.””

I stayed quiet.

She looked at me.

“And maybe you should.””

The admission surprised me.

Michael leaned forward.

“What are you talking about?””

Chloe placed a folder on the table.

“I found out about the forged documents years ago.””

My heart stopped.

“And you said nothing?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“Why?””

Chloe swallowed.

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

Afraid?

The woman who stole my seat.

The woman who insulted my life.

Afraid?

“Afraid of what?”” I asked.

She looked directly at me.

“Daniel.””

The name hung between us.

Chloe continued.

“When I married him, I thought I was marrying a successful businessman.””

She opened the folder.

“But I slowly realized he wasn’t successful because he was talented.””

She pushed the papers toward Michael.

“He was successful because he controlled people.””

Michael looked through them.

“What are these?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Chloe’s voice dropped.

“Your father had been hiding money.””

I frowned.

“From who?””

“From everyone.””

She looked at me.

“His partners. The government. Me.””

Michael scanned the documents.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?””

Chloe looked away.

“What?””

He pointed at a page.

“This transfer.””

Her silence answered.

Michael looked up.

“This money went to an account under my name.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

Chloe whispered.

“That’s why I contacted you.””

Michael stood.

“You used me?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I didn’t know.””

The coffee shop suddenly felt too small.

Michael grabbed the papers.

“What exactly did my father do?””

Chloe looked at both of us.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Your father didn’t leave because he wanted a new life.””

She paused.

“He left because he was running from the one he destroyed.””

Before we could respond, Chloe’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

“What is it?”” Michael asked.

She didn’t answer.

She just turned the phone around.

A message had appeared.

One sentence.

May you like

And it was from Daniel.

I know you talked to Laura and Michael.
