Chapter 12: The Woman Who Disappeared

I couldn’t breathe.

The voice on the phone repeated my name.

“Laura?””

I gripped the table.

“Who is this?””

Michael immediately stood.

He watched my face change.

The woman on the phone was crying.

“It’s me.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Emily.””

The name hit me like a wave.

Emily Carter.

My old neighbor.

My closest friend during the first years after Daniel left.

The woman who knew everything.

The woman who disappeared fifteen years ago.

I sat down slowly.

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

My voice trembled.

“I thought you were gone.””

“I was.””

Michael came closer.

“Mom, who is it?””

I covered the phone.

“Someone from before.””

Emily spoke again.

“I’ve been trying to contact you.””

“Why now?””

“Because Daniel’s secret is about to destroy you.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

The anger came before the shock.

“You knew what happened?””

“I knew part of it.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her silence answered.

“Emily.””

“I was scared.””

That word again.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone except me.

I had simply survived.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because they’re still looking for me.””

Michael leaned closer.

“Put her on speaker.””

I did.

Emily gasped.

“Is that Michael?””

“Yes.””

There was a long pause.

“I remember when he was a baby.””

Michael looked surprised.

“You knew me?””

Emily laughed sadly.

“I held you the night your father left.””

The room became silent.

Michael looked at me.

I nodded.

Emily continued.

“Laura, you need to know something.””

“What?””

“The night Daniel left wasn’t the night everything started.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It started weeks earlier.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Tell me.””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Daniel discovered Chloe’s father was using his company to hide illegal transactions.””

Michael looked at the documents.

“We know that.””

“No.””

Emily’s voice became urgent.

“You don’t know the worst part.””

Everyone listened.

“Daniel wasn’t just a witness.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He was involved.””

The words landed heavily.

Michael looked at me.

“What?””

Emily continued.

“Daniel signed documents he shouldn’t have signed.””

I looked at the papers.

“But why?””

“Because he thought he could fix it.””

The same mistake.

Always trying to control everything.

Always believing consequences would disappear.

“Then he found out he was trapped.””

Emily’s voice broke.

“He wanted to tell you.””

I looked down.

“And?””

“He wrote that letter.””

The room went silent.

“The one I never received?””

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

“What did it say?””

Emily hesitated.

“Everything.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where is it?””

“I have it.””

Everyone froze.

“You have the letter?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel gave it to me the night he left.””

I felt dizzy.

“He trusted you?””

“He asked me to deliver it if he didn’t come back.””

Michael whispered:

“But she never did.””

Emily cried.

“No.””

I waited.

“Because someone found me first.””

The silence was terrifying.

“Who?””

Emily whispered:

“Chloe.””

I looked at Michael.

He already understood.

“What happened?””

Emily’s voice dropped.

“She threatened me.””

“With what?””

“With your family.””

My hands went cold.

“And then?””

“I disappeared.””

The call became quiet.

Then Emily said:

“Laura, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Chloe wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

Michael leaned closer.

“Then who was?””

Emily answered with three words.

“The person behind Chloe.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Emily took a breath.

Then she said a name.

A name that made Daniel’s face lose all color.

“Your father.””
