Chapter 9: My Father’s Final Protection

Nobody spoke after the recording ended.

Not for a long time.

My mother’s voice stayed in the room like a ghost.

She had been gone for years.

But somehow, she was still protecting me.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Thomas stared at the recorder.

Rachel looked through the documents again.

And me?

I just sat there.

Trying to understand.

“The money isn’t Dad’s?””

Thomas shook his head slowly.

“No.””

“Then whose is it?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather’s.””

I frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Your mother’s father.””

I felt lost.

“But why would Karen care about that?””

Rachel answered.

“Because your mother inherited something.””

“What?””

“A trust.””

She opened another file.

“Created before you were born.””

I stared.

“How much?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

“Tell me.””

Rachel finally said:

“Enough that someone would spend years trying to control it.””

I looked at the papers.

My whole life, I thought my father was just a successful businessman.

I never knew there was another world hidden beneath mine.

A world of money.

Secrets.

People willing to destroy families.

The woman who brought the recording forward sat quietly.

Thomas looked at her.

“You knew all these years?””

She nodded.

“I was afraid.””

“Who were you afraid of?””

She looked toward the window.

“Karen.””

The answer was simple.

But heavy.

“She found me after your mother died.””

“Why?””

“To make sure I stayed quiet.””

My hands tightened.

“What did she say?””

The woman looked at me.

“She told me if I ever spoke, she would make sure your father lost everything.””

Thomas stood.

“She threatened Michael too?””

“No.””

The woman shook her head.

“She threatened Matthew.””

The room went cold.

“She said a child without parents was easy to disappear.””

I felt sick.

Thomas immediately moved closer.

“She said that?””

The woman nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the floor.

Ten years old.

A dirt road.

A funeral.

Suddenly, it wasn’t just cruelty.

It was planned.

Karen hadn’t abandoned me because she was angry.

She abandoned me because she thought nobody would come looking.

Rachel picked up the will.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

She pointed to the final page.

“This section was added recently.””

Thomas frowned.

“Recently?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.””

I leaned closer.

There was another handwritten note.

Not my father’s.

Someone else’s.

*If Matthew finds this, it means Karen failed.*

My blood ran cold.

“Who wrote that?””

Nobody knew.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A man.

Older.

“Matthew?””

“Yes.””

“I need you to listen carefully.””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel.””

The room went silent when Thomas heard the name.

His face changed.

“Daniel?””

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

Thomas slowly stood.

“That’s Karen’s first husband.””

My grip tightened on the phone.

The man continued.

“I don’t have much time.””

“Why are you calling me?””

A shaky breath.

“Because your father was right about one thing.””

“What?””

“Karen doesn’t stop when she loses.””

I looked at Thomas.

Daniel continued.

“She destroys.””

My heart raced.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Somewhere Karen thought I’d never leave.””

“What does that mean?””

The line crackled.

Then Daniel whispered:

“She kept me hidden for twelve years.””

Nobody moved.

“She told everyone I abandoned her.””

My stomach dropped.

“She told everyone I was dead.””

The room exploded into chaos.

Thomas grabbed the phone.

“Daniel, where are you?””

But the line cut.

I stared at the screen.

Call ended.

Then a message appeared.

One photo.

Attached.

I opened it.

It was a picture of a room.

An old basement.

On the wall were dozens of photographs.

My father.

My mother.

Me.

Taken over many years.

Watching.

Tracking.

Following.

At the bottom of the picture was one sentence.

*She was never trying to steal your father’s money.*

A second message arrived.

*She was trying to erase the last person who could expose her.*

I looked at Thomas.

He already knew.

“Who?””

My voice shook.

“Who is the last person?””

Thomas stared at the photograph.

Then slowly whispered:

“Your father.””

I frowned.

“My father is dead.””

Thomas looked terrified.

“No, Matthew.””

He pointed at the picture.

“She’s been trying to destroy his reputation.””

A pause.

Then:

“Because if the truth about Michael comes out…”

May you like

He swallowed.

“Karen goes to prison forever.””
