Chapter 7: The Woman Who Controlled the Story

Karen stood in Lucille’s doorway like she belonged there.

That was the thing about her.

She never looked afraid.

Not when she left me on that dirt road.

Not when she lied about my father’s will.

Not even now, standing in a room full of people who finally knew the truth.

She looked calm.

Almost amused.

Thomas stepped forward.

“How did you find us?””

Karen smiled.

“You always underestimate me.””

“You broke into this house.””

“No,” she replied.

“I walked through an unlocked door.””

Lucille’s face hardened.

“You have a lot of nerve showing up here.””

Karen looked at her.

“And you have a habit of collecting lost children.””

The insult landed.

Lucille’s expression changed.

But she didn’t move.

“I took in a child you abandoned.””

Karen tilted her head.

“Careful. Words like abandoned can be dangerous.””

I felt my hands tighten into fists.

“You left me.””

Karen looked at me.

For the first time, her smile faded slightly.

“Matthew.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more pretending.””

She took a step closer.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“I understand enough.””

“Your father was sick. He wasn’t thinking clearly.””

I stared at her.

“You’re blaming him?””

“I’m saying he made mistakes.””

Thomas laughed quietly.

A cold laugh.

“Michael’s biggest mistake was trusting you.””

Karen’s eyes moved toward him.

“You always hated me.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“I hated what you did.””

She walked farther into the room.

“You all think you know the story.””

She pointed at the papers on the table.

“You found a few documents and suddenly you’re detectives.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You changed your name.””

Karen looked at her.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

The room froze.

My aunt’s face went pale.

“You remember me?””

Karen smiled.

“How could I forget the woman who ruined my first marriage?””

I looked between them.

“Your first marriage?””

Karen sighed.

“There it is.””

She looked at me.

“The question everyone wants answered.””

She walked around the room slowly.

“My past.””

Nobody spoke.

“Matthew, your father told you I was a monster, didn’t he?””

I shook my head.

“My father never called you that.””

That seemed to surprise her.

“He didn’t?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“He just told me to trust the truth.””

For the first time, Karen looked uncomfortable.

Just for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“Your father always had a talent for making himself look noble.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Karen ignored him.

“Do you know why Michael never told you about me?””

“Because you lied.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Because he was ashamed.””

My chest tightened.

“Of what?””

Karen stared at me.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

I hated that she still had the ability to hurt me.

Even after everything.

“You don’t get to talk about my mother.””

“Oh, Matthew. You don’t even know what happened.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

Karen looked at her.

“Why? Because the truth is inconvenient?””

Thomas pointed toward the door.

“Leave.””

Karen smiled.

“You’re worried.””

“I’m not.””

“Yes, you are.””

She looked at him.

“Because you know what happens if Matthew finds out everything.””

I looked at Thomas.

“What is she talking about?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

I turned toward Thomas.

“Tell me.””

He looked away.

“Thomas.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Your father and I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“We hid something.””

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone hides something.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“But this was different.””

Karen smiled.

“Tell him.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t just discover Karen’s crimes.””

I waited.

“She discovered something about me.””

The room went completely still.

“What?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Before I left Georgia, I made a deal.””

“With who?””

He looked at Karen.

“With her.””

My heart dropped.

“You worked with her?””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head quickly.

“I thought I was stopping her.””

“But you weren’t.””

Karen smiled.

“I convinced him he could control the situation.””

Thomas’s voice became quiet.

“I was wrong.””

I stepped back.

My entire life felt like a puzzle where every piece was broken.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he still trusted you?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because I told him everything.””

Karen laughed.

“That’s not the full story.””

She reached into her coat.

Then she pulled out a small envelope.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized it.

The handwriting.

My father’s.

“Where did you get that?””

Karen smiled.

“Your father gave it to me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

She held it up.

“Before he died.””

Thomas moved forward.

“Don’t.””

Karen opened the envelope.

“He wanted to tell Matthew the truth.””

She pulled out a letter.

Then she looked directly at me.

“But he never got the chance.””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Karen looked at the paper.

Then smiled.

“It says your father knew exactly who betrayed him.””

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Karen looked at the screen.

Then her expression changed.

For the first time.

Fear.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke.

Karen’s face slowly lost color.

“No.””

A pause.

“That’s impossible.””

She looked at me.

Then Thomas.

Then the phone.

The person on the other end said something else.

Karen whispered:

“You found the original?””

Nobody understood.

Except Thomas.

His eyes widened.

“The original will.””

Karen ended the call.

She looked at us.

May you like

And for the first time since I knew her…

She looked scared.
