Chapter 9: The Recording That Changed Everything

I replayed the recording seven times.

Seven.

Not because I didn’t understand what I heard.

Because I needed my mind to accept it.

Sarah’s voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Threatening.

The kind of voice someone uses when they believe they have already won.

The recording continued.

There was a long pause after Sarah’s words.

Then Emily spoke.

Her voice was weak.

But there was something else there.

Strength.

“You’re threatening me?””

Sarah answered immediately.

“I’m warning you.””

“About what?””

“About what happens if you ruin everything.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

Michael stood beside me, listening.

I wanted to tell him to leave.

I wanted to protect him from hearing any more.

But I knew better now.

Secrets had never protected my son.

They had only made him feel alone.

The recording continued.

Emily coughed.

“Everything?””

Sarah laughed softly.

“Yes.””

“You mean Marcus.””

“Yes.””

“And the house.””

Silence.

Then Sarah said:

“And the future.””

Michael looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Emily’s voice became quieter.

“You planned this.””

“No.””

“You got close to us because you knew I was sick.””

A pause.

Then Sarah said:

“You were always going to die.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

Michael covered his mouth.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because Emily was gone.

Because someone had stood in front of a dying woman and spoken those words.

Sarah continued.

“I didn’t make you sick.””

“No.””

“But you benefited from it.””

Another silence.

Then Emily said something I almost missed.

“You’re not getting Michael.””

My entire body froze.

Sarah answered:

“I don’t want him.””

The disgust in her voice was unmistakable.

“I want what comes after.””

I stopped the recording.

Michael stared at me.

“She said she didn’t want me.””

I immediately turned toward him.

“No.””

“But she did.””

“No.””

“Dad—”

“Listen to me.””

His eyes filled.

“She didn’t mean you.””

“I heard her.””

“You heard someone who never deserved you.””

He looked away.

And I understood.

Because those words had cut into the deepest wound he carried.

The fear that he was unwanted.

I restarted the recording.

We needed the whole truth.

A few seconds later, Emily spoke again.

“You will never replace me.””

Sarah laughed.

“You think this is about replacing you?””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

“Then what is it about?””

A pause.

Then Sarah answered.

“You had everything.””

Emily sounded confused.

“What?””

“Everyone loved you.””

The bitterness in Sarah’s voice was obvious.

“Your husband adored you. Your son worshipped you. People trusted you.””

“That’s what this is?””

“Yes.””

“Jealousy?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Emily whispered:

“You need help.””

Sarah’s voice hardened.

“No. I need what you had.””

The recording ended there.

I sat in silence.

Michael walked to the window.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said:

“Why didn’t you see it?””

The question wasn’t angry.

That made it worse.

I looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“You loved her.””

“I thought I did.””

He turned.

“What does that mean?””

I took a breath.

“It means I loved the person I thought she was.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“And Mom knew.””

“Yes.””

“She tried to warn you.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t listen.””

The truth hurt.

Because he was right.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked at me.

“Dad.””

“I’m sorry I made you live with someone who made you feel unwanted.””

His eyes filled.

“I thought you didn’t notice.””

I swallowed.

“I noticed too late.””

That afternoon, I contacted my attorney.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted protection.

For Michael.

For Emily’s memory.

For the truth.

Two days later, Sarah showed up at the house.

She didn’t knock.

She just opened the gate and walked toward the front door.

I was waiting.

When she saw me, she stopped.

“You found it.””

I held up the recording device.

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I was angry.””

“You threatened my dying wife.””

“I didn’t mean—”

“You told her you would take everything.””

“I was emotional.””

“You told her you never wanted Michael.””

Her face tightened.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For once, Sarah had no explanation.

I nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

Her eyes filled.

“Marcus, I loved you.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She looked hurt.

“I did.””

“You loved what I represented.””

“That’s not true.””

“You loved Emily’s life.””

She looked away.

“And when she was gone, you thought you could step into it.””

Her silence answered.

Then she whispered:

“I could have made you happy.””

I shook my head.

“You never understood.””

“What?””

“I was never looking for someone to replace Emily.””

Sarah’s face fell.

“I was looking for someone who would love Michael.””

The front door opened.

Michael stood there.

Sarah looked at him.

For a second, something like regret crossed her face.

“Michael…”

He shook his head.

“No.””

She stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

He laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was too late.

“You’re sorry because Dad found out.””

“That’s not true.””

“You never apologized before.””

She looked down.

And Michael said the words I knew he needed to say.

“You made me feel like my mom’s death was an inconvenience.””

Sarah started crying.

But Michael didn’t move.

“You made me feel like I was the reason you couldn’t have the family you wanted.””

“That’s not—”

“It is.””

Silence.

Then Sarah looked at me.

“You’re really choosing him?””

I stared.

The question shocked me.

Because there was only one possible answer.

“He was never a choice.””

Sarah looked at Michael.

Then at the house.

Then walked away.

But before she reached her car, she stopped.

“I didn’t do everything you think I did.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She turned.

“There’s something you still don’t know about Emily.””

My patience was gone.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“Listen.””

I said nothing.

Sarah swallowed.

“Emily wasn’t just hiding things from you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the house.

Then said:

“She knew why I was interested in your family.””

A chill went through me.

“Why?””

Sarah whispered:

“Because I wasn’t the only person watching you.””

Then she got into her car and drove away.

May you like

Leaving me with one final question.

Who else had been waiting?
