Chapter 3: The Secret Sarah Kept

I didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did Michael.

The message sat between us like a ticking clock.

At 2:17 in the morning, I was still sitting in the kitchen.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

This was the same kitchen where Emily used to dance while cooking.

The same kitchen where Michael learned to make pancakes.

The same kitchen where Sarah had slowly erased pieces of the family I used to have.

My phone rang.

Sarah.

I stared at her name.

Then answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Marcus, we need to talk.””

“No.””

“You should hear me out.””

“You had plenty of opportunities.””

A pause.

Then:

“Michael told you everything, didn’t he?””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he’s good at making himself look innocent.””

I stood.

“Be careful.””

“Marcus—”

“No. You don’t get to do this.””

“Do what?””

“Attack my son because you got caught.””

Her voice changed.

“You really think you know everything?””

The question bothered me.

Because it sounded confident.

“What are you talking about?””

“Your first wife.””

The kitchen suddenly felt colder.

“Don’t.””

“I’m serious.””

“Do not bring Emily into this.””

“I’m bringing her into this because you don’t know the truth.””

I ended the call.

But the damage was done.

Because Sarah had found the one thing she knew could hurt me.

Doubt.

The next morning, Michael came downstairs.

He looked exhausted.

“Did she call?””

I nodded.

“What did she say?””

I hesitated.

Then I told him.

His face changed.

“She’s lying.””

“I believe you.””

But there was something in his expression.

A fear.

“Michael?””

He looked away.

“Dad…”

“What?””

“She said something like that before.””

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

My heart sank.

“What did she say?””

He swallowed.

“She told me Mom wasn’t as perfect as I thought.””

I sat down.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, she said you’d be angry.””

I closed my eyes.

Sarah had been building walls around my son.

And I had been thanking her for keeping the house peaceful.

That afternoon, I went through the box carefully.

Not because I wanted to find something bad about Emily.

Because I needed to understand what Sarah knew.

Inside the box was a stack of letters.

Most were from Emily’s mother.

But one envelope caught my attention.

My name was written on it.

Emily’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

I had never seen it before.

The envelope was sealed.

The date was from three weeks before Emily died.

I sat at the table.

Michael stood beside me.

“Open it.””

I looked at him.

“What if it’s something bad?””

He gave a sad smile.

“Dad.””

“What?””

“Mom loved you.””

I opened the letter.

My eyes moved across the first line.

*Marcus, if you’re reading this, something happened before I could explain everything myself.*

I stopped breathing.

The next words changed everything.

*I need you to know that Sarah is not who she says she is.*

I looked up.

Michael was watching me.

And suddenly I understood.

Sarah hadn’t just been cruel.

She had been hiding something.

Something involving Emily.

Something involving the past.

I kept reading.

The letter ended with one sentence.

A sentence that made my hands go cold.

*The truth is in the bank documents I left with my sister. Please find them before Sarah does.*

I looked at Michael.

“Your grandmother.””

“What?””

“Do you know where Grandma keeps old documents?””

He shook his head.

My phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t Sarah.

It was Emily’s sister.

I answered immediately.

“Laura?””

Her voice was tense.

“Marcus.””

“What happened?””

“I was going to call you tomorrow.””

“Tell me now.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Did you find Emily’s letter?””

My heart stopped.

“How do you know about that?””

Another pause.

“Because I’m the one who hid it.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why?””

Her voice dropped.

“Because Emily was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

May you like

Then Laura said the words I never expected.

“Afraid Sarah would destroy your family.””
