Chapter 9: The Secret My Mother Carried
I stared at the photograph until the screen blurred.
My mother.
Standing outside the bridal shop.
Standing beside Victor Hale.
The same man who had been secretly working with Isabella.
The same man who had appeared at my wedding with a folder containing Nathan’s name.
My hands went cold.
“No.””
Nathan looked at me.
“What?””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
He took the phone from my hand.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“Who sent this?””
“I don’t know.””
He checked the number.
Blocked.
Unknown.
Of course.
Someone wanted us to see the picture.
But they didn’t want us to know who showed it to us.
Nathan zoomed in.
The image was clear.
Too clear.
My mother was smiling.
Not nervously.
Not awkwardly.
She looked comfortable.
Like she knew Victor.
Like she trusted him.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because my mother was the one person I believed would never keep something this big from me.
I called her immediately.
She answered after three rings.
“Sweetheart?””
Her voice softened instantly.
“Are you okay?””
I looked at Nathan.
Then back at the photo.
“Mom, I need to ask you something.””
A pause.
“What happened?””
I swallowed.
“Do you know Victor Hale?””
The silence that followed was enough.
I didn’t need an answer.
My mother knew.
“Mom?””
She exhaled slowly.
“Yes.””
Nathan looked at me.
I put the phone on speaker.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Another silence.
Then my mother said:
“Because I didn’t think it mattered anymore.””
I felt something crack inside me.
“Mom, he was at my wedding.””
“I know.””
The words shocked me.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“How long have you known?””
My mother hesitated.
“Since before the wedding.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain wasn’t anger.
Not yet.
It was disappointment.
The kind that came from someone you trusted completely.
“Why?””
My mother’s voice became quiet.
“Because Victor was the reason I found your dress.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The dress shop.””
I sat down.
“What are you talking about?””
She took a shaky breath.
“The gown you chose wasn’t supposed to be there.””
Nathan looked confused.
I barely heard him.
“What do you mean?””
My mother continued.
“When I took you shopping, the consultant told me there was one dress that had just arrived.””
“The one I loved.””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
“Because Victor arranged for it.””
The room went silent.
Nathan looked at me.
My heart started racing.
“Why would he do that?””
My mother didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me.
“Mom.””
Finally, she whispered:
“Because he knew your father.””
I stared at the floor.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The same impossible word.
The same family mystery.
Everyone seemed connected to people I thought were strangers.
My mother continued.
“Years ago, before you were born, your father worked with Victor.””
Nathan looked at me.
His father.
My father.
Two families.
One secret.
“What did they do?””
My mother sighed.
“They were trying to expose someone.””
“Who?””
She didn’t need to say it.
We already knew.
“Your father discovered Victor’s business partner was stealing money.””
“Nathan’s father?””
“Yes.””
Nathan went still.
My mother continued.
“Your father helped him gather evidence.””
I looked at Nathan.
His face had lost all emotion.
“What happened?””
My mother’s voice trembled.
“Your father was afraid someone would come after him. So he hid copies of the evidence.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too carefully.
I noticed.
So did Nathan.
“You do know.””
My mother went quiet.
“Mom.””
She sighed.
“I know where he hid one piece.””
My heart pounded.
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“In your wedding dress.””
The words didn’t make sense.
Then they did.
The lace.
The train.
The reason Victor arranged the dress.
The reason Isabella reacted so strongly.
The dress wasn’t just a memory.
It was a hiding place.
Nathan whispered:
“Your father used the dress?””
My mother answered softly.
“He knew nobody would look there.””
I stood.
“So the dress was never about Isabella.””
“No.””
My mother’s voice broke.
“It was never about a dress.””
A wave of emotion hit me.
My wedding dress.
The thing Isabella tried to destroy.
The thing everyone thought represented jealousy and old wounds.
It had been carrying a secret for decades.
Nathan looked at me.
“Where is the piece?””
I looked at my mother.
“Mom?””
She hesitated.
“I thought it was gone.””
“Gone?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because after the wedding…”
She stopped.
“What happened after the wedding?””
My mother became silent.
Then she whispered:
“Someone came to my house.””
The room changed.
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“Who?””
“I never saw his face.””
My mother’s voice shook.
“But he asked about the dress.””
I felt a chill.
“When?””
“Two days after you bought it.””
Nathan looked at me.
“Victor.””
My mother didn’t answer.
But we all knew.
That night, Nathan and I returned to the wedding venue.
Not because we wanted memories.
Because Daniel still had every photo from that day.
And if my mother was right, there had to be something.
A clue.
Something hidden.
We searched every picture.
Every angle.
Until Nathan stopped.
“Wait.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He zoomed in on a photo from before the ceremony.
The dress hanging in the bridal room.
Beautiful.
Perfect.
But near the bottom of the train…
There was something.
A tiny mark.
A stitched symbol.
I leaned closer.
“That wasn’t there when I saw it.””
Nathan looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
Because I remembered every inch.
My mother had touched every detail.
The symbol looked like a small circle with a line through it.
A mark.
A message.
Then Daniel called.
“Nathan?””
“What?””
“I found something strange.””
“What?””
“I checked the original photos.””
A pause.
“The symbol wasn’t added by the designer.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who added it?””
Daniel’s answer was barely audible.
“Your father.””
And before we could ask another question…
The door to the venue opened.
A figure stepped inside.
Someone we thought had disappeared.
May you like
Someone carrying the missing piece of the puzzle.
Victor Hale.
