Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Smile
I had never seen a wedding reception go quiet so quickly.
When I finally stepped out of the bridal suite, every conversation had stopped.
Guests weren’t dancing anymore.
They weren’t eating.
They were watching.
At the center of the room stood Nathan and Isabella.
And the expression on her face told me everything.
She wasn’t embarrassed.
She was afraid.
Nathan held Daniel’s camera in his hand.
“Mom,” he said, “I want you to explain something.””
Isabella looked around.
“Not here.””
“Yes,” Nathan replied.
Her lips tightened.
“You’re embarrassing me.””
Nathan laughed once.
A quiet, painful laugh.
“You’re worried about embarrassment?””
The room stayed silent.
He turned the camera screen toward her.
“Explain this.””
Isabella looked at the photo.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she recovered.
“Oh, please.””
She waved her hand.
“That proves nothing.””
Nathan stared at her.
“It shows you looking directly at the dress.””
“I was walking.””
“Your heel was above the train.””
“I was trying to avoid it.””
“Then why did you step on it?””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But everyone noticed.
“I made a mistake.””
Nathan’s voice became colder.
“No. You made a choice.””
I watched Isabella’s eyes move toward the guests.
She was searching for someone to defend her.
Anyone.
But nobody did.
Even her closest friends looked uncomfortable.
Then she looked at me.
And somehow, that hurt more.
Because she didn’t look sorry.
She looked angry that she had been caught.
“You have always wanted to make me look bad,” she said.
I blinked.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at my dress.
“Everything had to be about your mother. Your family. Your choices.””
My heart sank.
There it was.
The real reason.
Not the dress.
Not the lace.
My mother.
Nathan stepped forward.
“Don’t bring her into this.””
“Why not?”” Isabella snapped.
“She made sure I wasn’t part of anything.””
I stared at her.
“I invited you.””
“You went dress shopping without me.””
“My mom was sick.””
The words came out quietly.
But they hit harder than shouting.
“My mom was sick, Isabella.””
For the first time, her expression softened.
Only for a second.
Then pride returned.
“I didn’t know it would be the last special moment she had.””
The room went completely still.
Because everyone understood what she meant.
My mother’s cancer had worsened.
She had been too weak to travel.
She had missed several events.
But that day?
That day mattered.
And Isabella knew.
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Mom…”
She crossed her arms.
“I felt replaced.””
I looked at her.
“You felt replaced by a dying woman spending time with her daughter?””
Nobody spoke.
Even Isabella had no answer.
Nathan took a deep breath.
“I need you to leave.””
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“I’m your mother.””
“And she’s my wife.””
The words echoed through the room.
Isabella looked like she had been slapped.
“You would choose her over me?””
Nathan’s expression broke.
“I shouldn’t have to choose.””
Then he looked around.
“But tonight, you forced me to.””
A few guests started crying.
My bridesmaid Claire came beside me and squeezed my hand.
I wanted to feel victorious.
I didn’t.
I only felt tired.
Because this wasn’t how I wanted my wedding night to be remembered.
After Isabella left, the reception slowly continued.
But something had changed.
The celebration felt fragile.
Like everyone was afraid the wrong movement would break it again.
Later that night, Nathan and I sat alone in the hotel room.
The wedding dress hung nearby.
Torn.
Damaged.
But still beautiful.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not seeing it sooner.””
I reached for his hand.
“You can’t control what she does.””
“No.””
He stared at the floor.
“But I should have protected you from feeling alone.””
That was the thing about Nathan.
He wasn’t perfect.
But he listened.
And sometimes, that mattered more.
The next morning, I woke up to dozens of messages.
Some from guests.
Some from family.
Then one message stopped me.
It was from Isabella.
At first, I didn’t want to open it.
But I did.
There was only one sentence.
“You think you know what happened, but you don’t know the whole story.””
I stared at the screen.
Nathan saw my face.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
Then his expression changed.
“What does she mean?””
I didn’t know.
But an hour later, another message arrived.
This time from someone else.
May you like
Someone I never expected.
And it contained a photograph that made me realize Isabella’s betrayal had started long before my wedding day.
