Chapter 9: The Final Name
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
The words refused to make sense.
The person who ordered my death was not Chad Reynolds.
It was someone you would never suspect.
Someone who has been beside you your entire life.
My fingers tightened around the letter.
For months, I had searched for an enemy.
I had looked at Chad.
I had looked at Brooke.
I had looked at Reynolds Global.
But my father’s final warning suggested something far worse.
The enemy was not standing across from me.
The enemy had been standing beside me.
Daniel watched my face carefully.
“You understand now.””
I looked up.
“Understand what?””
“That your father was never afraid of losing his company.””
The room was silent.
“He was afraid of losing you.””
Those words hit harder than anything else.
I looked back at the letter.
My father’s handwriting continued.
Ethan,
The easiest person to blame is usually the loudest enemy.
Do not make that mistake.
The person closest to you is the one who knows exactly where to strike.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then I saw the next line.
A name.
A name I had never expected.
My heart stopped.
Mia.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I looked at the woman standing beside me.
My assistant.
My friend.
The person who had helped me rebuild after the accident.
The person who brought me documents.
The person who told me who accessed my files.
“Mia?””
Her face immediately changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
That was the answer.
Lucas whispered:
“You knew.””
Mia stepped backward.
“I can explain.””
I laughed quietly.
That sentence again.
Everyone had an explanation.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a story where they were somehow the victim.
“Explain what?”” I asked.
She looked at Daniel.
Then Lucas.
Then me.
“The truth.””
“Try me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want any of this.””
I stared at her.
“Then why?””
She covered her mouth for a moment.
Then she finally said:
“Because my father made me.””
The room went still.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“My father worked for Reynolds Global.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“How long?””
“Since before Carter Innovations existed.””
Lucas looked shocked.
“You were planted?””
Mia closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word felt like a betrayal.
Not because she was an enemy.
Because she was someone I trusted.
Someone who knew every weakness in my company.
Every decision.
Every secret.
“Why stay?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“Because I was supposed to destroy you.””
Her voice cracked.
“But I couldn’t.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“When I met you, you weren’t what my father told me.””
“What did he tell you?””
“That you were arrogant. Ruthless. Someone who would destroy anyone to win.””
A bitter smile crossed her face.
“But you weren’t.””
I looked away.
“I don’t understand.””
“My father wanted information.””
She wiped her tears.
“At first, I gave it to him.””
The admission hurt.
“How much?””
“Enough.””
Silence.
“Enough for what?””
Her voice became smaller.
“To help them understand your company.””
Lucas stepped forward.
“And the accident?””
Mia looked down.
“I didn’t know about the accident.””
“Do you expect us to believe that?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Because if I had known, I would have stopped it.””
I studied her.
There was something different in her expression.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“What changed?””
She looked at the letter.
“Your father.””
My eyebrows lowered.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“He knew.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Your father discovered Mia’s connection months before the accident.””
I turned toward him.
“Then why keep her?””
“Because he believed she could be saved.””
Mia looked at me.
“He gave me a choice.””
“What choice?””
“He said I could continue helping the people who wanted to destroy you…”
She swallowed.
“Or I could help him expose them.””
I stared.
“And you chose?””
“I chose him.””
The room became quiet.
“Then why did my father’s letter name you?””
“Because he knew you needed to know everything.””
She reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small device.
“I kept this for months.””
“What is it?””
“A recording.””
She placed it on the table.
Daniel looked at her.
“From who?””
Mia pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
Chad’s father.
Robert Reynolds.
“You have one job.””
A younger Mia’s voice answered.
“Find his weaknesses.””
Robert continued:
“Ethan Carter’s greatest weakness is that he thinks people are loyal.””
The recording continued.
“I want his company. His trust. Everything.””
Then another voice appeared.
A voice I recognized.
Brooke.
“I don’t want anyone hurt.””
Robert laughed.
“You should have thought about that before choosing our family.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
The truth was finally complete.
Chad.
Robert Reynolds.
The accident.
The betrayal.
Everything.
But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.
“Why now?”” I asked.
Mia looked at me.
“What?””
“Why reveal everything now?””
She hesitated.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a familiar voice.
Robert Reynolds.
“Ethan.””
I felt every muscle tighten.
“You finally found the pieces.””
“What do you want?””
A laugh.
“The same thing your father refused to give me.””
“You already said that.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I want something bigger.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“I want you to admit you’re exactly like your father.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you think winning makes you untouchable.””
I said nothing.
Robert continued.
“Come to the old Carter warehouse.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
Don’t.
I ignored him.
“Why?””
“Because that’s where your father’s story ended.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And where mine begins?””
Robert laughed.
“Exactly.””
The call ended.
Everyone looked at me.
Lucas spoke first.
“It’s a trap.””
“I know.””
“Then why go?””
I looked at the letter from my father.
Because now I understood.
My father had never wanted me to hide.
He wanted me to finish what he started.
“I’m not going there to fight him.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Then why?””
I looked toward the city lights outside.
“Because he thinks I’m still the man who lost everything.””
May you like
I turned back.
“He doesn’t know what I found.””
