Chapter 8: The Betrayal Within
The first thing I did was return to Carter Innovations.
Not because I was reckless.
Because fear was exactly what they wanted.
I refused to give it to them.
Mia was waiting when I arrived.
“You look like you haven’t slept.””
“I haven’t.””
She studied my face.
“What happened?””
I placed the photograph on her desk.
Her expression changed immediately.
“Someone took this inside the building.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
I looked around the office.
“Someone here helped them.””
Mia became quiet.
“You think it’s an employee?””
“I think it’s someone I trusted.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because I already knew the answer would hurt.
We spent the next several hours reviewing security footage.
Most people would look for dramatic evidence.
A suspicious person.
A hidden camera.
A secret meeting.
But betrayal rarely looked like a crime.
Sometimes it looked like loyalty.
At 3:17 p.m., we found something.
A person entering my private office.
Not a stranger.
Not an outsider.
Someone with access.
Someone who knew the building.
Mia froze.
“No.””
I looked at the screen.
My heart sank.
Because the person walking into my office was someone I never expected.
My closest business partner.
Lucas Bennett.
The man who had stood beside me since Carter Innovations began.
The man who called me family.
Mia whispered:
“He wouldn’t.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I wanted to believe that too.
I called him.
No response.
Again.
Nothing.
Finally, I sent one message.
We need to talk.
He replied immediately.
I’m coming.
Twenty minutes later, Lucas entered my office.
He looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Exhausted.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I nodded.
“Why?””
Lucas closed the door.
“Because you don’t understand.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.””
He sat down.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix what?””
“Everything.””
I stared at him.
“By spying on me?””
His face tightened.
“I was working against them.””
“Then why access my files?””
“Because I needed proof.””
“Proof for who?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Lucas.””
He looked away.
“Chad’s father had people everywhere.””
“So you joined them?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I got close enough to destroy them.””
Silence.
I wanted to believe him.
But belief had become expensive.
“What did you find?””
Lucas pulled out a folder.
“I found the person controlling everything.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
Lucas looked at me.
Then said:
“Your attorney.””
The room froze.
Daniel stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
Lucas shook his head.
“I thought so too.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were financial transfers.
Emails.
Contracts.
And one name repeated over and over.
Daniel Hayes.
I looked at Daniel.
The man who had protected my father.
The man who had brought me the truth.
The man I trusted.
He looked shocked.
“I can explain.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel slowly reached into his coat.
My body tensed.
Mia stepped back.
Lucas moved between us.
But Daniel didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I was waiting for this moment.””
I stared.
“Waiting?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because your father knew you would eventually discover this.””
My voice became cold.
“Discover what?””
Daniel handed me the envelope.
My father’s handwriting was on it.
Again.
But this time, the words on the front were different.
For Ethan.
When Daniel saw the suspicion in my eyes, he said:
“The truth is not that I betrayed your father.””
He looked at Lucas.
“It’s that I helped him set a trap.””
I opened the envelope.
The first line made my heart stop.
If Daniel is the one who gives you this letter, then you are closer to the truth than anyone else.
I looked up.
Daniel’s eyes were filled with regret.
My father’s final plan wasn’t about protecting his company.
It wasn’t even about protecting me.
It was about exposing the person who had been hiding in the shadows from the beginning.
I continued reading.
And the final sentence changed everything.
The person who ordered my death was not Chad Reynolds.
May you like
It was someone you would never suspect.
Someone who has been beside you your entire life.
