Chapter 6: The Father Hidden Behind the Lie
The letter slipped from Rose’s fingers.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The forest, the vehicles, the armed men, the broken branches around them—all of it disappeared.
There was only one sentence burning in her mind.
*The man who raised you was never your father.*
Her entire life had been built on a lie.
She looked down at the letter again, hoping the words would change.
They didn’t.
The ink remained.
The handwriting remained.
Her mother’s final warning remained.
Rose slowly looked up.
“Who is my father?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was worse than any confession.
She turned toward Gabriel.
Not Victor.
Not Adrian.
Not Daniel.
Gabriel.
Because somehow, deep down, she already knew.
“You know.””
Gabriel’s expression tightened.
“Rose…”
“You know.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
But everyone heard it.
“You knew before tonight.””
Gabriel looked away.
That was all the confirmation she needed.
A sharp pain moved through her chest.
“How long?””
Gabriel didn’t answer.
“How long have you known who I am?””
His silence became unbearable.
“Answer me.””
“Since before you were born.””
The words landed like a physical blow.
Rose stepped back.
“No.””
Gabriel looked at her.
“Rose—”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t get to say my name like that.””
Her voice cracked.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my entire identity was fake.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me believe Richard Whitmore was my father.””
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
“Because Eleanor asked me to.””
Rose laughed.
A broken, painful laugh.
“Everyone blames my mother.””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Me.””
That stopped her.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t explain.
He simply accepted the accusation.
“I made a promise to her.””
Rose stared.
“What promise?””
Gabriel looked toward the letter.
“To keep you alive.””
The answer should have softened her.
Instead, it made her angry.
“Alive?””
She pointed around them.
“This is what alive looks like?””
Her voice grew louder.
“Being sold into a marriage I never agreed to?””
Gabriel flinched.
Rose noticed.
And somehow that made it worse.
“You knew I would hate this.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I would run.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Gabriel looked at her.
“Because I didn’t know another way.””
For the first time, Rose saw something she had never seen before.
A man who had no solution.
No control.
No perfect plan.
Just regret.
But she wasn’t ready to forgive him.
Not even close.
“Tell me.””
Gabriel was silent.
“Tell me who my father is.””
The night seemed to freeze.
Victor looked away.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Margaret began crying quietly.
Daniel lowered his head.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except her.
Finally, Gabriel spoke.
“Your father’s name was Alessandro Moretti.””
Rose stared.
The name meant nothing.
Until she saw Gabriel’s face.
The way he said it.
The way the guards reacted.
“Moretti?””
Gabriel nodded.
“He was my older brother.””
The world shifted.
Rose looked at him.
“You’re saying…”
“Yes.””
Her breath caught.
“Your father was my brother.””
Nobody spoke.
The impossible truth sat between them.
Gabriel Moretti wasn’t just connected to her past.
He was family.
Not by blood.
But by something even more complicated.
Her hand moved to her mouth.
“So Richard…”
“Richard Whitmore took you after Alessandro died.””
“How?””
Gabriel looked at Victor.
And Rose followed his gaze.
Victor sighed.
“It was twenty-two years ago.””
His voice became quieter.
“Alessandro and Eleanor were planning to leave everything behind.””
Rose frowned.
“My mother loved him?””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Not because she knew.
Because she didn’t.
She had spent her entire life believing her mother was a woman in a photograph.
Now she was learning her mother had once been young.
Had loved.
Had fought.
Had risked everything.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Victor looked at her.
“Because your existence was dangerous.””
Rose shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
He stepped closer.
“When Alessandro died, there were people who wanted his entire bloodline erased.””
Rose looked at Gabriel.
“Why?””
“Because he knew too much.””
“About what?””
Gabriel answered.
“My father’s empire.””
Rose frowned.
“Your family?””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised her.
Gabriel continued.
“The Moretti family was not always what it is now.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“My brother wanted to change that.””
“And someone killed him.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Again.
Another secret.
Rose almost screamed.
“Who killed him?””
Then Daniel spoke.
“We don’t know.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel continued.
“We know who ordered the attack.””
Gabriel’s expression changed.
“Daniel.””
But Daniel didn’t stop.
“The person who ordered Alessandro Moretti’s death was the same person who tried to kill Eleanor.””
Rose’s heart raced.
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly at her.
“Your grandfather.””
The words were followed by complete silence.
Rose felt dizzy.
“My grandfather?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard’s father.””
“But why?””
Victor answered.
“Because he wanted control.””
Rose looked down.
Every generation.
Every family.
Every person she trusted.
Power had poisoned all of them.
“So Richard took me.””
“Yes.””
“And raised me as his daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Gabriel answered.
“Because it was the only way to hide you.””
Rose looked at him.
“From who?””
His expression became cold.
“From everyone.””
“That includes you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
More than she expected.
“You stayed away from me.””
“Yes.””
“You watched me grow up.””
“Yes.””
“And you never came near me.””
Gabriel looked at the ground.
“Because every time I saw you, I remembered what I failed to protect.””
Rose didn’t know what to say.
For years, she had imagined her real family as something beautiful.
A missing piece.
A hidden love story.
Instead, it was a battlefield.
A place where everyone lost something.
A sudden noise interrupted them.
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Margaret’s.
She looked at the screen and immediately went pale.
“What is it?”” Rose asked.
Margaret didn’t answer.
She handed the phone to Gabriel.
He looked at the message.
And his entire expression changed.
Rose noticed.
“What happened?””
Gabriel didn’t respond.
“Gabriel.””
He looked at her.
“The estate was attacked.””
Her stomach dropped.
“What?””
“While we were here.””
“By who?””
Gabriel stared at the screen.
Then he said:
“Someone who knew exactly where we would be.””
Rose felt cold.
“There was a leak.””
“Yes.””
“From your people?””
Gabriel nodded.
“That means someone close to you betrayed you.””
Another impossible truth.
Another person hiding.
Rose looked around.
At Victor.
At Adrian.
At Daniel.
At the guards.
At Gabriel.
Her entire life had become a room full of locked doors.
Then Gabriel’s phone vibrated again.
This time, he looked confused.
The message came from an unknown number.
He opened it.
And froze.
Rose saw his face change.
“What?””
Gabriel didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
Slowly, he turned the phone toward her.
There was only one sentence.
*Stop searching for Eleanor Whitmore. She is not missing. She is hiding from her daughter.*
Rose stared.
Her heart sank.
“No.””
Another message appeared.
A photograph.
Gabriel opened it.
The picture showed an older woman sitting at a table.
Alive.
Healthy.
Watching the camera.
Watching whoever had taken the photo.
Rose covered her mouth.
Because she recognized the woman instantly.
Her mother.
But beneath the photograph was a timestamp.
Taken that morning.
Which meant only one thing.
Eleanor Whitmore wasn’t somewhere far away.
She was close.
Very close.
And she had been watching Rose’s life from a distance.
Then another message appeared.
This one had only four words.
*Ask Gabriel what happened.*
Rose slowly looked up.
The question she had been avoiding all night finally arrived.
“What happened between you and my mother?””
Gabriel stared at the photograph.
His face was filled with something she couldn’t identify.
Pain.
Regret.
Fear.
Then he whispered:
“Your mother didn’t disappear from the world, Rose.””
A pause.
“She disappeared from me.””
May you like
And Rose realized the greatest secret wasn’t who her father was.
It was what Gabriel Moretti had done to make Eleanor Whitmore leave him behind.
