Chapter 2: The Man Waiting in the Shadows

Rose didn’t stop running until her lungs burned.

The wedding dress that had once made her look like royalty was now dragging behind her like a heavy chain. The expensive lace was torn, stained with mud, and caught on every branch that reached toward her from the dark forest.

She didn’t care.

For the first time all day, she could breathe.

No cameras.

No guests.

No father forcing a smile.

No stranger waiting at the end of an aisle.

Just cold air filling her lungs and the sound of her own footsteps.

She had escaped.

At least, that was what she believed.

The forest surrounding the Moretti estate was larger than she expected. She had studied the property map earlier that week, memorizing every possible exit, every road, every path that could take her away from Gabriel Moretti.

But maps didn’t show how terrifying a forest looked at midnight.

They didn’t show how every broken branch sounded like someone following you.

They didn’t show how quickly fear could turn freedom into panic.

Rose pushed through the trees, holding the torn remains of her dress in one hand.

Her ankle throbbed from the fall.

Her hands were scratched.

Her hair was falling loose around her face.

She probably looked insane.

But insane was better than trapped.

A few minutes later, she reached a narrow dirt road.

Her heart jumped.

A road meant civilization.

A road meant help.

A road meant she could finally call Lily.

She stepped forward.

Then headlights appeared.

Rose froze.

A black SUV moved slowly down the road.

Her first instinct was to hide.

She ducked behind a tree, holding her breath as the vehicle approached.

The SUV stopped.

The engine remained running.

The driver’s door opened.

Rose felt her stomach drop.

A man stepped out.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Dark coat.

He looked familiar.

Too familiar.

She had seen him before.

Not at the wedding.

Not at the estate.

Somewhere else.

The man looked around the forest calmly, as if he already knew exactly where she was.

“Rose,” he called.

Her blood turned cold.

How did he know her name?

She moved backward silently.

The man took another step.

“I know you’re there.””

Rose’s fingers curled around a fallen tree branch.

She hated herself for being afraid.

She hated that after escaping one powerful man, she might have run directly into another.

“Who are you?”” she demanded.

The man stopped.

For a moment, surprise crossed his face.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like he had expected this.

“Someone who can help you.””

Rose stepped out from behind the tree but kept her distance.

“That’s what everyone says right before they ruin my life.””

The man studied her torn wedding dress.

“Gabriel forced you into this marriage.””

Rose’s expression changed.

“How do you know about Gabriel?””

The man ignored the question.

“You should be careful. Men like him don’t let people leave.””

Rose laughed bitterly.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“Everyone keeps warning me about Gabriel Moretti.””

She looked at him.

“But nobody seems worried about the men warning me.””

The man’s smile disappeared slightly.

“You’re smarter than your father said.””

Rose felt a chill.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The stranger reached into his coat.

Rose immediately lifted the branch.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

Then slowly removed a small envelope instead of a weapon.

“Your father wanted you to have this.””

Rose stared at the envelope.

“My father?””

“He knew you would run.””

Those words hit harder than she expected.

Her father knew.

He knew she would rather jump from a window than marry Gabriel.

And he still let the wedding happen.

“Where is he?”” Rose asked.

The man looked away.

“Not safe.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one you’re getting.””

Rose tightened her grip.

“Who are you?””

The man was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Adrian Vale.””

The name meant nothing to her.

But the way he said it made her uneasy.

“I’ve never heard of you.””

“You weren’t supposed to.””

Before Rose could respond, another sound cut through the forest.

Engines.

Multiple vehicles.

Adrian’s expression changed instantly.

Not fear.

Calculation.

“They found us.””

Rose’s heart raced.

“Who?””

Adrian looked toward the trees.

“Not Gabriel.””

That answer frightened her more than anything else.

Because Gabriel was the monster she knew.

A monster she could understand.

A monster with rules.

This was something different.

“Run,” Adrian said.

Rose didn’t move.

“You just said you could help me.””

“I can.””

“Then why are you telling me to run?””

“Because if they catch you, I won’t be able to.””

The sound of footsteps grew louder.

Rose looked back toward the darkness.

Then at Adrian.

Every instinct screamed not to trust him.

But every instinct also screamed not to stay.

She ran.

Again.

Twenty minutes earlier, Gabriel Moretti had been standing in the middle of his security room, watching the city’s cameras light up across multiple screens.

He wasn’t watching Rose anymore.

He was watching everyone else.

“Any sign?”” he asked.

A guard shook his head.

“Nothing yet.””

Gabriel looked at the screen displaying the forest perimeter.

“That’s impossible.””

The guard hesitated.

“What do you mean?””

“Rose is injured. She’s wearing a wedding dress. She has no money, no phone, and no vehicle.””

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.

“She should have been found already.””

The room became silent.

Because everyone understood what he meant.

Someone else was looking.

Someone else was moving.

And that person had a head start.

Gabriel picked up Rose’s wedding contract from the desk.

The paper was still there.

Her signature.

His signature.

A legal agreement that everyone believed explained their marriage.

But Gabriel knew the truth.

The marriage was never supposed to be a cage.

At least, not for Rose.

Richard Whitmore had misunderstood one thing.

Gabriel didn’t want a wife who feared him.

He needed someone who trusted him.

Someone who could see past the rumors.

Someone who could help him expose the person destroying both their families.

And Rose?

Rose was the only person connected to Richard Whitmore who wasn’t lying.

Or so Gabriel thought.

A guard suddenly spoke.

“Boss.””

Gabriel looked up.

“We found something.””

The guard turned the monitor around.

A security camera from the edge of the property showed Rose stopping on the road.

And another vehicle.

Gabriel stared.

“Enhance.””

The image sharpened.

A man stepping from the SUV.

Gabriel’s expression became unreadable.

“Who is that?”” the guard asked.

Gabriel didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

And he couldn’t believe it.

Adrian Vale.

A man who had vanished five years ago.

A man connected to the murder of Gabriel’s closest friend.

A man who knew secrets about Rose’s family.

The same man who was supposed to be dead.

Gabriel grabbed his coat.

“Prepare the car.””

The guards moved instantly.

One of them hesitated.

“Boss… if Adrian has her—”

“He doesn’t.””

The guard looked confused.

“How do you know?””

Gabriel looked at the screen.

Because Rose wasn’t the type of woman who would willingly follow someone.

Not after what she had just done.

Not after climbing out of a third-floor window in a wedding dress.

“She’s running from everyone.””

Gabriel’s voice lowered.

“But she hasn’t chosen anyone yet.””

Rose followed Adrian through the woods, but every step made her more suspicious.

He moved too easily.

Like he knew the forest.

Like he had done this before.

Finally, she stopped.

“No.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

“I’m done following strangers.””

His expression tightened.

“You don’t have time.””

“I don’t care.””

Rose stepped back.

“You know my father. You know Gabriel. You knew I would run.””

Adrian said nothing.

“That’s not a coincidence.””

The silence was enough.

Rose felt her fear transform into anger.

“Who are you really?””

Adrian looked at her for several seconds.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small photograph.

He handed it to her.

Rose almost dropped it when she saw the image.

It was her mother.

Young.

Smiling.

Alive.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was Gabriel Moretti.

Rose stared at the picture.

“That’s impossible.””

Adrian watched her carefully.

“Your father told you your mother died in an accident.””

Rose looked up.

“She did.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“She was murdered.””

The world seemed to stop.

Rose shook her head.

“No.””

“She discovered something about Richard Whitmore and Gabriel’s family.””

“No.””

“And before she could tell anyone…”

Adrian stepped closer.

“She disappeared.””

Rose stared at him.

She wanted to call him a liar.

She wanted to throw the photograph away.

She wanted to wake up.

But she knew that face.

Her mother.

The woman she barely remembered.

The woman whose death had always felt like an unfinished story.

A sound came from behind them.

A branch breaking.

Rose turned.

A figure stood between the trees.

Watching.

Waiting.

And then a familiar voice spoke.

“Rose.””

Her heart stopped.

Because she knew that voice.

Gabriel Moretti stepped into the moonlight.

His expression wasn’t angry.

It wasn’t cold.

It was something far more terrifying.

Worried.

Adrian immediately moved in front of her.

Gabriel’s eyes locked onto him.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Adrian smiled faintly.

“And you should have protected her mother.””

Rose looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Neither man answered.

Then Gabriel looked directly at her.

And for the first time since their wedding day, Rose saw something she never expected to see in his eyes.

Regret.

“Rose,” Gabriel said quietly.

“Your mother’s death was the reason I agreed to marry you.””

A cold wind moved through the trees.

Rose felt the ground disappear beneath her feet.

“What?””

Gabriel took one step forward.

But Adrian’s voice cut through the darkness.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Rose looked at Gabriel.

Then Adrian.

Two powerful men.

Two impossible stories.

And one dead woman connecting them both.

Gabriel opened his mouth to speak.

But before he could say another word, headlights appeared behind him.

More vehicles.

More men.

And a voice came through the darkness from someone neither Rose nor Gabriel expected.

“Looks like the whole family finally gathered.””

Rose turned toward the sound.

A man stepped out of the shadows.

A man carrying a photograph of her mother.

A man whose face she had never seen before.

But Gabriel recognized him instantly.

And the fear that crossed his face told Rose one thing.

May you like

Whoever this man was…

He was the reason everyone had been lying to her.
