Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
I didn’t sleep.
Not because I couldn’t.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph.
Emily sleeping.
Someone had been close enough to take it.
Close enough to watch us.
Close enough to know exactly what would hurt me most.
By sunrise, I had checked every window and every door in the house.
Nothing was broken.
Nothing was missing.
That scared me more.
Whoever entered didn’t need force.
They already knew how to get in.
Denise found me standing in the kitchen.
“You saw the message.””
It wasn’t a question.
I turned.
“How long?””
She looked confused.
“How long what?””
“How long has Adrian been inside our lives?””
She lowered her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not true.””
She sighed.
“Since before we met.””
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
She sat across from me.
“When I left Adrian, I thought changing my life would erase him.””
“But it didn’t.””
“No.””
She looked toward the hallway where Emily slept.
“He always found a way back.””
I poured coffee.
My hands were steady.
My mind wasn’t.
“What happened the night Emily was born?””
Denise froze.
The question.
The exact question Adrian wanted me to ask.
“I told you she was born safely.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was afraid.””
“You’ve said that.””
“Because it’s the truth.””
“Denise, I need the truth that you didn’t give me.””
The silence lasted a long time.
Then she whispered:
“I almost lost her.””
I sat down.
“What happened?””
“Adrian came to the hospital.””
My jaw tightened.
“He was there?””
“Yes.””
“He knew?””
“He knew everything.””
She wrapped her hands around her coffee cup.
“He came into my room and told me if I tried to disappear with Emily, he would make sure I regretted it.””
“What did he do?””
“He tried to take her.””
The room went silent.
“But the nurses stopped him.””
“And then?””
Denise looked at me.
“That’s when I called you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She nodded.
“I called you.””
“When?””
“The night Emily was born.””
I stared at her.
“I was overseas.””
“I know.””
“Then how did I not get the call?””
Her face changed.
“I don’t know.””
I stood.
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You do.””
She looked terrified.
“Marcus…”
“Who stopped the call?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Someone did.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The pieces started connecting.
Adrian.
The lies.
The missing years.
The secret.
“Who?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“His brother.””
I frowned.
“Adrian has a brother?””
She nodded.
“Caleb.””
I remembered the story.
The room.
The first lie.
The office.
“He told people that room belonged to your brother.””
Denise looked away.
“He used Caleb’s name because Caleb was the only person who helped me.””
I sat back down.
“So Adrian had someone inside the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“And someone intercepted my call.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because Adrian wanted me to believe you abandoned us.””
The words hurt.
Because suddenly I understood.
He didn’t just separate us.
He built a story.
A story where I was the villain.
Where Denise was alone.
Where Emily grew up without knowing me.
My phone rang.
The name on the screen shocked me.
Terrence.
I answered.
“What happened?””
His breathing was heavy.
“Marcus, I found something.””
“What?””
“When I left your house, I checked the documents Denise showed me.””
“And?””
“They weren’t fake.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The divorce papers.””
My stomach tightened.
“She had real documents.””
I looked at Denise.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Terrence’s voice lowered.
“That’s why I called.””
“Explain.””
“She was legally divorced before she married you.””
Everything stopped.
I looked at Denise.
She looked away.
“Marcus…”
I held up my hand.
“Don’t.””
Terrence continued.
“Someone altered the records later.””
“What records?””
“Your marriage records.””
My mind raced.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He sounded certain.
“I checked.””
The world suddenly felt unreal.
My wife.
My daughter.
My marriage.
All of it.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone erased your marriage.””
The call ended.
I stared at Denise.
She was crying.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
She couldn’t.
And that silence was worse.
“You married me while you were still connected to Adrian.””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
She walked toward the cabinet.
Pulled out a folder.
Again.
More papers.
More secrets.
“I was never divorced from Adrian.””
My heart sank.
“Then what was the wedding?””
She looked at me.
A broken expression.
“The wedding was real.””
“Then how?””
She whispered:
“Because someone made it look like Adrian was dead.””
The room went cold.
“Dead?””
She nodded.
“I thought he was.””
“Who told you?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“You did.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She started crying.
“Marcus, six years ago… you were the one who received the call saying Adrian died.””
I felt my blood turn cold.
“I never received that call.””
Her face went pale.
“Then someone used your name.””
Before I could answer, the lights went out.
The house fell silent.
Then from upstairs came a sound.
A slow creak.
Someone walking.
May you like
Inside the house.
And Emily screamed.
