Chapter 3: The Truth Denise Buried
The voice on the phone stayed in my head long after the call ended.
I’m Emily’s real father.
I’m coming home.
Three sentences.
Three bullets.
That was what they felt like.
Denise stood in the middle of my office, holding a child who was not supposed to exist in my marriage.
Terrence stood near the doorway, looking like he wanted to disappear.
And I stood there wondering if I had ever truly known my wife.
“Who was that?”” I asked.
Denise didn’t answer.
“Who was that man?””
She looked down.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Not this time.””
Emily was watching me.
A child should never have to witness adults destroying each other.
But she was already trapped in the middle.
Denise gently touched her hair.
“Emily, sweetheart, can you go sit on the couch for a minute?””
The little girl looked scared.
“Are you leaving?””
The question destroyed me.
Because she wasn’t asking Denise.
She was asking if everyone eventually left.
Denise shook her head.
“No. I’m not leaving.””
Emily slowly walked out.
Once she was gone, I turned back.
“Start talking.””
Denise sat down.
For the first time since I came home, she looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Just exhausted.
“Emily was born six years ago.””
I crossed my arms.
“Before we met.””
“Yes.””
“And her father?””
She looked toward the window.
“His name is Adrian Cross.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the fear on her face meant everything.
“Who is he?””
“He’s dangerous.””
I almost laughed.
“Dangerous enough that you locked a child in my office?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never locked her in there to hurt her.””
“Then why?””
She swallowed.
“Because he was looking for her.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at the small bed.
The toys.
The drawings.
“How long has she been here?””
Denise hesitated.
“Three months.””
Three months.
I had been deployed.
My home had become a hiding place.
My office had become a secret room.
And my wife had let another man believe she was abandoned.
“Terrence.””
He looked up.
“You believed her?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she showed me divorce papers.””
Denise closed her eyes.
My head turned.
“What divorce papers?””
She didn’t respond.
“Denise.””
She whispered:
“Fake ones.””
I stepped back.
“You lied to him.””
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
She looked at me.
“I was trying to survive.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were making choices.””
The words hurt her.
Good.
Because I was hurting too.
Terrence walked into the room.
“I need to apologize.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For believing her.””
He rubbed his face.
“I thought you left her. I thought she was alone.””
I stared at him.
“You slept in my house.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
“You slept in my bedroom.””
“I know.””
I expected anger.
A fight.
Anything.
But the man looked as broken as I felt.
Then the front door slammed.
Everyone froze.
Denise went pale.
“No.””
A voice came from downstairs.
“Denise?””
Her entire body stiffened.
Emily ran into the hallway.
“Mommy?””
Denise immediately moved in front of her.
“Stay behind me.””
I stepped forward.
“Who is that?””
She whispered:
“Adrian.””
The man from the phone.
The real father.
The person who had somehow found us.
The footsteps moved closer.
Slow.
Confident.
Like he owned the house.
Then a tall man appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
He looked nothing like the villain I expected.
That was worse.
He looked normal.
Clean suit.
Calm expression.
A friendly smile.
His eyes moved around the room.
Then landed on me.
“Marcus Hale.””
I didn’t answer.
He smiled.
“I was wondering when I’d finally meet you.””
“Get out.””
He ignored me.
His eyes moved to Denise.
“You told him?””
Denise said nothing.
Adrian sighed.
“You always were terrible at keeping secrets.””
Emily started crying.
“Daddy?””
Adrian’s expression softened.
He looked at her.
“There’s my girl.””
He took a step forward.
I moved between them.
“Don’t.””
His smile disappeared.
“You don’t know what you’re protecting her from.””
“I know exactly what I’m protecting her from.””
He tilted his head.
“You think Denise told you the truth?””
That sentence stopped me.
Because everyone in this house had been lying.
Adrian reached into his jacket.
Denise gasped.
“Don’t.””
He pulled out a folder.
Not a weapon.
Documents.
He tossed them onto the table.
“Ask your wife why Emily’s birth certificate has your name on it.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the papers.
My name.
My name?
Impossible.
I looked at Denise.
She looked terrified.
And for the first time since I came home, I understood something.
The secret behind the locked door wasn’t just that Denise had a child.
May you like
The secret was that somehow…
I might have been connected to her all along.
