Chapter 5: The Daughter I Never Knew

The paper in my hand weighed less than an ounce.

But it felt heavier than every piece of equipment I had carried during deployment.

Six years.

Six years of birthdays I missed.

Six years of first words.

First steps.

First days of school.

Six years of a little girl growing up somewhere in the world while I believed my only family was the woman standing in front of me.

My eyes stayed on the DNA results.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

I read the number again.

Then again.

Like somehow the ink would rearrange itself and give me a different answer.

It didn’t.

“Marcus…”

Denise’s voice was barely above a whisper.

I looked up.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

Because she knew.

She knew I wasn’t ready for comfort.

Not from her.

Not yet.

I placed the paper on the table.

“You knew.””

Her face collapsed.

“I found out after Emily was born.””

“You knew I was her father.””

She nodded.

“And you never told me.””

“I was scared.””

The anger came back.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Something colder.

“You keep saying that.””

She wiped her tears.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Fear explains a mistake. It doesn’t explain six years.””

The room was silent.

Emily sat on the couch nearby, holding a stuffed rabbit against her chest.

She was watching us.

Listening.

Trying to understand words that were far too big for her.

I lowered my voice.

“Why wasn’t I there?””

Denise looked away.

“Because Adrian found me before I could tell you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She sat down slowly.

“After I left Adrian, I thought I was safe. I changed my number. I moved. I started over.””

She glanced at Emily.

“When I met you, I finally believed I had a chance at a normal life.””

“And then?””

“Then Adrian found me.””

The memory seemed painful.

“He showed up at my apartment.””

“When?””

“Three weeks before our wedding.””

I stared at her.

Three weeks.

“You never told me.””

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

She looked down.

“No.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the neighborhood looked peaceful.

Neighbors walking dogs.

Cars passing.

A normal evening.

My entire world had been destroyed in the middle of an ordinary day.

“How did Adrian get the DNA test?””

Denise hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

I turned around.

“Then tell me all of it.””

She took a deep breath.

“When Emily was born, I listed you as the father because I knew you were.””

I looked at the certificate.

“But Adrian found out.””

“How?””

“He took a copy of the hospital records.””

My hands tightened.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Denise looked toward the front door where Adrian had been standing.

“Because he wanted control.””

A strange laugh escaped me.

“So this entire time, he knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he let me marry you?””

She nodded.

“He said if I told you, he would make sure I never saw Emily again.””

I looked at Emily.

The little girl who had called Denise Mommy.

The little girl who had hidden in my office.

The little girl who now had my blood running through her veins.

A thought hit me.

“Why did you let him come back?””

Denise froze.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why was he here?””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He found out you came home.””

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

I walked toward her.

“Denise.””

Her hands started shaking.

“He has someone watching us.””

The words made the room colder.

“You’re saying he has been watching this house?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

She swallowed.

“Months.””

I looked around.

The walls.

The windows.

The place I thought was mine.

Suddenly it felt like a cage.

Terrence spoke for the first time in several minutes.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

He looked ashamed.

“When Denise told me she was alone, she said she needed someone around because she was scared.””

“And you believed her.””

“Yes.””

I almost asked why.

But I already knew.

Because everyone believed the version of Denise she created.

Everyone except the person who should have known the truth.

Me.

Terrence stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.””

I studied him.

A stranger.

A man who had walked into my marriage because of a lie.

A man who had unknowingly become part of Adrian’s plan.

“You need to leave.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

He looked at Denise.

“I hope you tell him everything.””

Then he walked out.

The door closed behind him.

For the first time since I arrived home, it was just me, Denise, and Emily.

A family that had existed without me.

I knelt down near the couch.

Emily looked nervous.

“Hi.””

She hugged the rabbit tighter.

“Hi.””

I smiled slightly.

“What’s your rabbit’s name?””

She looked down.

“Captain.””

“Captain?””

She nodded.

“Mommy said soldiers have captains.””

My throat tightened.

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

She studied me.

“Are you a soldier?””

I nodded.

“I am.””

She thought about that.

Then asked the question I knew was coming.

“Are you my daddy?””

I looked at Denise.

She was crying silently.

I looked back at Emily.

There was no perfect answer.

No way to fix six missing years.

“I think I am.””

She tilted her head.

“Think?””

I smiled sadly.

“I know I am.””

Her eyes widened.

Then something happened I wasn’t prepared for.

She moved closer.

Slowly.

Like she was approaching someone she wasn’t sure would stay.

Then she wrapped her arms around me.

The weight of her small body broke something inside me.

I had survived battles.

I had faced danger.

But nothing had ever hurt like holding my daughter for the first time and knowing I had missed half her life.

That night, after Emily fell asleep, I sat alone in my office.

The lock was gone.

The room was open.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about why Denise chose this place.

Why hide her here?

I opened the desk drawer.

Inside were drawings.

Dozens of them.

Pictures of a little girl with a man wearing a uniform.

A house.

A family.

I picked one up.

At the bottom, written in messy handwriting, were four words.

“My daddy comes home.””

My eyes burned.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

Emily sleeping.

Taken moments ago.

From inside my house.

Underneath it was a message.

*You finally found your daughter. Now ask your wife why she never told you about the night she was born.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*Because that night, Marcus, she didn’t just lose me. She betrayed me.*
