Chapter 6: The Voice From The Past

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood in the middle of the garden holding the phone like it was something fragile.

Like one wrong movement could make the voice disappear.

“Say that again.””

His voice trembled.

The guests watched him.

Richard watched him.

And I watched my son hear a miracle he had never allowed himself to imagine.

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel?””

The sound was weak.

Older.

But there was something in it.

Something familiar.

A piece of Roberto.

A piece of me.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Because he knew.

Even before seeing her.

Even before touching her.

He knew.

“Isabella?””

A long silence followed.

Then the voice whispered:

“Yes.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

And for a moment, he looked like the little boy who had lost his sister.

“She’s alive.””

The words escaped him.

Nobody knew what to say.

Amelia began crying.

Not because she understood.

Because she finally realized the world she thought she controlled was much bigger than her.

Richard stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Daniel turned.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

His voice became stronger.

“You don’t get near this.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Daniel stared at him.

“For the first time in my life, I think I do.””

He walked away from Richard.

Toward me.

“Mom, where is she?””

I looked down.

Because this was the moment I had feared.

The moment the secret I protected became a question I had no choice but to answer.

“She’s in another state.””

Daniel froze.

“You knew where she was?””

I nodded.

The pain returned to his face.

“You knew?””

I touched his hand.

“I knew she was alive.””

“And you still didn’t tell me?””

“I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

I looked at the ground.

“Because she made me promise.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“She asked you to hide from me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I looked toward Richard.

“Because she was afraid.””

Richard laughed coldly.

“Of course.””

Everyone turned.

He shook his head.

“This is unbelievable.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because your mother is making me the villain.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You’re doing that yourself.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“She disappeared because she wanted to escape.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t.””

One word.

But it carried fifteen years of anger.

“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Then tell them.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Tell them what?””

“The truth.””

He smiled slightly.

“Tell them why Isabella ran.””

Daniel looked between us.

“What is he talking about?””

I stayed silent.

Because the truth was complicated.

And sometimes the hardest secrets are not the ones that hurt others.

They are the ones that reveal your own mistakes.

“Your sister discovered something,” I said.

Daniel waited.

“She discovered that someone inside the company was planning to destroy your father.””

“Who?””

I looked at Richard.

But before I answered, Daniel’s phone rang again.

The call ended.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

*Do not trust your mother. She knows why Isabella disappeared.*

Daniel read it.

Then slowly looked at me.

My heart sank.

Because whoever sent it knew exactly where to hurt us.

Richard looked at the message.

And smiled.

A small, confident smile.

Like he knew something I didn’t.

Daniel noticed.

“You know who sent this.””

Richard said nothing.

That was enough.

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Dad.””

Richard finally spoke.

“Your mother is not telling you everything.””

Daniel looked at me.

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

I wasn’t.

Not yet.

Because there was one truth I had never told anyone.

Not even Isabella.

I reached into my purse.

And pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Daniel stared.

“What is that?””

I looked at him.

“The last letter your father wrote before he died.””

He frowned.

“You said the envelope was from him.””

“It was.””

“Then what is this?””

My hands shook.

“Something I was supposed to destroy.””

The garden went silent.

Daniel took the paper.

He opened it.

And read the first sentence.

Then he looked at me.

His eyes filled with confusion.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“This says Isabella wasn’t running from them.””

I felt tears forming.

“Daniel…”

He looked at the paper again.

“She was running from you.””

The world stopped.

Richard lowered his eyes.

And I knew.

The final truth had arrived.

But it was not the truth anyone expected.
