Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The name hung in the air like a ghost.

Isabella Hernández.

My daughter.

The daughter everyone believed had died fifteen years ago.

Daniel stared at the paper in his hand.

Then he looked at me.

And I knew the question before he asked it.

“Mom…”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“How is Isabella’s name on this?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there are some wounds that never truly heal.

They only learn how to hide.

And for fifteen years, I had hidden mine.

Amelia stepped closer.

“This is impossible.””

Her voice was different now.

The confidence was gone.

Even she understood something impossible had just happened.

“Isabella died.””

Nobody corrected her.

Because that was the story everyone knew.

The story I had allowed everyone to believe.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You knew about my sister?””

Richard’s face was pale.

“I…”

He stopped.

That single hesitation destroyed him.

Daniel took a step back.

“You knew.””

Richard shook his head.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

My son’s voice cracked.

“You don’t get to tell me to listen anymore.””

The garden became painfully quiet.

I watched Daniel struggle.

His whole life, he had believed he was an only child.

He had spent years carrying the pain of losing his father.

Now, in one night, he had discovered that everything he knew about his family was incomplete.

I touched his arm.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

And the hurt in his eyes was worse than anger.

“Was she alive?””

I closed my eyes.

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

“Yes.””

The word broke the room.

A gasp moved through the guests.

Even Richard looked stunned.

Not because he didn’t know.

Because he knew I had finally said it.

Daniel stared at me.

“My sister was alive?””

I nodded slowly.

“For a while.””

His face twisted.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at the paper.

At Isabella’s name.

At the nightmare I had buried.

“Your sister didn’t die.””

I swallowed.

“She disappeared.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

That question hurt more than anything else.

Because I had asked myself the same thing every day.

“I tried.””

My voice shook.

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

I looked toward Richard.

And Daniel followed my eyes.

Understanding arrived slowly.

Then all at once.

“Dad?””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Daniel turned.

“Did you know my sister was alive?””

Richard’s silence answered.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You knew.””

“I knew there were rumors.””

“Rumors?””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You knew your own niece might be alive, and you called it rumors?””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“No.””

Daniel pointed at him.

“I don’t.””

He looked around.

“I don’t understand anything anymore.””

The emergency lights continued glowing above us.

Making everyone’s faces look unfamiliar.

Especially the people I had trusted.

Eleanor walked toward Richard.

“Tell the truth.””

Her voice was quiet.

But everyone listened.

“Mother—”

“No.””

She raised a hand.

“I spent years defending you.””

Her eyes filled with disappointment.

“Do not make me regret it.””

Richard looked away.

And that was when I knew.

He had been hiding more than I imagined.

I turned to Daniel.

“Your father discovered something about the company.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t know everything.””

I looked at the crowd.

“At the time, Roberto believed someone was stealing money.””

I remembered the nights.

The endless paperwork.

The worried expression he tried to hide from me.

“But then he found something worse.””

Daniel whispered:

“What?””

I looked at him.

“He found out people were changing ownership records.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“María.””

I ignored him.

“Someone was slowly taking control of everything your father built.””

Daniel looked at the notebook.

“And Isabella found out?””

I nodded.

“She helped him.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody expected that.

Isabella had been twenty years old.

Young.

Brilliant.

Fearless.

She had inherited Roberto’s stubbornness.

The kind that made her fight for what was right even when it was dangerous.

“She found documents hidden in the company archives.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“And then?””

I looked down.

“Then she disappeared.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Daniel’s voice softened.

“What happened that night?””

I remembered every second.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The police.

The empty road.

“She called me.””

My hands trembled.

“She said she had proof.””

“What proof?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“Because the call ended.””

I looked at Richard.

“And she never came home.””

Amelia covered her mouth.

“Your daughter…”

I nodded.

“The police searched for months.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“But they found nothing.””

“No.””

“Then why did everyone think she was dead?””

I closed my eyes.

“Because Richard told everyone he saw the accident.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Dad?””

Richard looked furious now.

“You are listening to a woman who has been hiding things from you for years.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“Answer the question.””

Richard clenched his jaw.

“I saw her car.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

A long silence.

Then Richard said:

“She was gone.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You never saw her body.””

Richard looked away.

That was the answer.

The one nobody wanted.

I looked at the guests.

At all the people who had believed the Whitmores.

“Your father knew Isabella was alive.””

Daniel looked at me.

“How?””

“Because Roberto received a message.””

“What message?””

I reached into my pocket.

I had another envelope.

Smaller.

Older.

Daniel looked surprised.

“I thought the evidence was stolen.””

“This wasn’t in the bag.””

I handed it to him.

“Your father gave it to me separately.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

His fingers froze.

Because the picture showed a young woman standing outside a train station.

Alive.

Smiling.

Holding a newspaper.

Isabella.

But there was something written on the back.

Daniel turned it over.

His face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

Then at Richard.

The words were simple.

But they destroyed everything.

*“If anything happens to me, trust Daniel’s sister. She knows what her uncle did.””*

Daniel slowly lowered the photograph.

“Her uncle.””

Everyone looked at Richard.

And Richard whispered:

“No.””

For the first time that night, he looked truly afraid.

Because the truth had finally found its way home.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the unknown number.

Everyone watched as he answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Weak.

Shaking.

But familiar.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

The phone nearly slipped from his hand.

“Who is this?””

The voice answered.

And I knew before Daniel spoke.

Because a mother always knows.

Daniel looked at me.

Tears filling his eyes.

“Mom…”

May you like

His voice broke.

“She says she’s Isabella.””
