Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Secret

I didn’t sleep.

Not that night.

Not for more than an hour.

The message sat on my phone like a weight.

My father wasn’t alone.

What did that mean?

Who was the person in the photo?

And why had someone waited ten years to tell me?

At sunrise, I found my mother sitting outside the resort café.

She looked like she already knew why I was there.

“You got a message.””

It wasn’t a question.

I sat down.

“How?””

Her face changed.

“Because I know who sent it.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

She looked toward the ocean.

“Your aunt.””

I frowned.

“My aunt?””

My mother nodded.

“She contacted me last night.””

“Why?””

“Because she said the truth couldn’t stay hidden anymore.””

I felt angry.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My mother looked at me.

“I should have told you.””

The sadness in her voice made me pause.

“Told me what?””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father’s death wasn’t as simple as we thought.””

I felt numb.

“The doctors said it was a heart attack.””

“They did.””

“Then what are you saying?””

My mother looked down.

“I’m saying your father was under enormous stress before he died.””

I waited.

“Because of Vanessa?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because of both of you.””

That hurt.

“What does that mean?””

She reached into her purse.

Then she placed an envelope on the table.

“I kept this because I didn’t want either of you to see it.””

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

Emily,

If you are reading this, something has happened that made your mother decide you deserve the truth.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

My father had written my name.

Before he died.

I continued.

I love both of my daughters. But I am afraid Vanessa believes love is something that must be earned by winning.

My breath caught.

I looked at my mother.

“What is this?””

“She found it after he died.””

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

I froze.

My mother continued.

“She never gave it to us.””

The room spun.

“She kept my father’s letter?””

My mother nodded.

“Until last week.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

But we both knew.

Vanessa had been carrying a secret.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Emily, where are you?””

“At the café.””

“Don’t go anywhere.””

His voice sounded urgent.

“What happened?””

“Vanessa left the resort.””

I frowned.

“She left?””

“Yes.””

“Where did she go?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

“She took the old documents from the wedding planning folder.””

“What documents?””

“The ones about your family.””

I stood.

“Why would she take those?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because I think she’s been looking for something.””

Before I could respond, I saw a car speeding away from the resort entrance.

Vanessa was inside.

And in the passenger seat was a woman I recognized from the photograph.

The same woman standing beside my father.

My aunt.

I ran toward the driveway.

“Vanessa!””

The car stopped.

The window lowered.

My sister looked at me.

For once, she didn’t look angry.

She looked afraid.

“Emily…”

My aunt turned toward me.

Her face was full of regret.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your father didn’t die because of his heart.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“He died because he found out what she had done.””

The world went silent.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And I realized the pool wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.

May you like

It was only the latest chapter.

The real secret had been waiting ten years to surface.
