Chapter 6: The Secret We Buried

Ten years earlier, my father died on a rainy Tuesday night.

That was the official story.

A heart attack.

A sudden collapse.

A tragedy nobody could prevent.

But Vanessa had never accepted that.

And neither had I.

The problem was, the truth was much harder to live with.

I left the hotel and walked along the beach.

The waves crashed against the shore, but I barely heard them.

My mind was somewhere else.

A different house.

A different night.

A different version of myself.

I was twenty-two.

Vanessa was nineteen.

Our father had always been the person who kept our family together.

He was the one who remembered birthdays.

The one who fixed broken furniture.

The one who called me every Sunday just to ask how my week was.

Vanessa loved him too.

But she also fought with him constantly.

They were too similar.

Both stubborn.

Both proud.

That night, Vanessa and my father had an argument.

A huge one.

I remembered standing upstairs while their voices echoed through the house.

“You never believe in me!”” Vanessa screamed.

“I believe in you,” Dad replied.

“But I won’t support choices that hurt your future.””

“You support Emily.””

“That is not true.””

“It always has been.””

Then there was a crash.

A sound that made my entire body freeze.

I ran downstairs.

My father was on the floor.

Vanessa was standing beside him.

Crying.

Terrified.

I called emergency services.

I held my father’s hand until the ambulance arrived.

But he never woke up.

Afterward, Vanessa told everyone she had been upstairs.

She told them she found him after hearing the noise.

And I never corrected her.

Because I knew the truth.

I knew I had seen her standing there.

But I also knew she was nineteen.

I knew she had just lost her father.

I knew grief could make people do strange things.

So I protected her.

For ten years.

Now, standing on the beach, I wondered why.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Emily.””

His voice sounded serious.

“Where are you?””

“The beach.””

“Vanessa is telling people you’re lying.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course she is.””

“She’s saying you pushed her into this.””

I almost laughed.

“How?””

“She says you grabbed her arm and made it look like she pushed you.””

I looked at the ocean.

The accusation was so ridiculous it almost hurt.

“She’s scared.””

“I know.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“She’s not scared.””

I remembered her face.

Her smile when I fell.

“She’s angry.””

Daniel was silent.

Then he asked:

“What happened with your father?””

I knew this moment would come.

I just didn’t know when.

I sat down in the sand.

“I saw something that night.””

Daniel waited.

“I saw Vanessa with him before he collapsed.””

“What?””

“They were arguing.””

“Did she hurt him?””

The question was painful.

Because I had asked myself the same thing for years.

“I don’t know.””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel said:

“Emily, you need to tell the truth.””

I looked back toward the resort.

At the building where Vanessa was probably telling everyone I was the villain.

“I tried protecting her.””

“Maybe you protected her too long.””

That afternoon, my mother called a family meeting.

Everyone was there.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

And me.

Vanessa sat with her arms crossed.

She looked confident.

Too confident.

“I’m glad we’re finally talking,” she said.

I almost smiled.

She made it sound like she was the victim.

My mother looked at me.

“Emily, Vanessa says there are things we need to discuss.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She’s changing the subject.””

Vanessa glared.

“Stay out of this.””

“No.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel had never spoken to her like that before.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Tell them.””

My stomach tightened.

“Tell them what?””

“The truth.””

My mother looked confused.

“Vanessa…”

“She knows what happened.””

I stared at my sister.

For the first time in years, I saw fear behind her anger.

Because she knew.

The truth was coming.

And she couldn’t control it anymore.

I took a breath.

“Fine.””

Everyone waited.

“I saw you with Dad that night.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

My mother whispered:

“What?””

I continued.

“You were arguing.””

Vanessa stood suddenly.

“Stop.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“But I covered for you.””

The room became completely silent.

And then Vanessa said something I never expected.

Something that changed everything.

“I didn’t push Dad.””

I looked at her.

“I never said you did.””

May you like

Her expression collapsed.

And I realized she had just revealed more than I ever could.
