Chapter 5: The Family Meeting
By the time I woke up the next morning, the wedding decorations were already being taken down.
The golden lights that had made the resort look magical the night before were hanging loose from the palm trees. The flowers Vanessa had spent months choosing were being placed into cardboard boxes.
Everything beautiful about the weekend was disappearing.
Just like Vanessa’s perfect story.
I sat on the edge of the bed in my hotel room, staring at my reflection in the mirror.
My shoulder ached.
My pride hurt more.
But the worst pain was the question that kept repeating in my mind.
How could my sister hate me that much?
A knock came at my door.
I expected Daniel.
Instead, I found my mother standing there.
Her expression was tense.
“Can I come in?””
I stepped aside.
She walked inside slowly, looking around the room.
“Emily…”
I knew that voice.
It was the voice people used before saying something they knew would hurt.
“What happened?”” I asked.
She sat down.
“Your sister is upset.””
I almost laughed.
“Upset?””
“Emily, please.””
“No, Mom. She pushed me into a pool knowing I couldn’t swim.””
My mother looked down.
“She said she didn’t mean for you to get hurt.””
I stared at her.
“She knew.””
“She said she thought you would just fall in.””
“That’s the point.””
Silence filled the room.
My mother folded her hands.
“You know how stressed Vanessa has been.””
I felt something inside me break.
“Are you defending her?””
“No.””
But her hesitation answered before her words did.
I walked toward the window.
“She could have killed me.””
“She didn’t.””
I turned around.
“Because Daniel pulled me out.””
My mother looked uncomfortable.
That was when I realized something.
Everyone wanted this to become smaller.
Easier.
A misunderstanding.
A mistake.
Anything except what it really was.
A choice.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
*Can you meet me downstairs? It’s important.*
I grabbed my jacket.
My mother looked worried.
“Where are you going?””
“To talk to someone who actually saw what happened.””
The lobby was almost empty.
Daniel stood near the entrance, holding two coffees.
He handed one to me.
“Black. No sugar.””
I looked at him.
“How did you know?””
“You always drank it that way when we had breakfast during wedding planning.””
I smiled sadly.
“You remember that?””
Daniel nodded.
“Someone had to.””
We sat near the window.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Daniel took a deep breath.
“I canceled the honeymoon.””
I already knew.
But hearing it out loud felt different.
“Vanessa knows?””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the ocean.
“Because I needed one night where nobody could manipulate me.””
I studied his face.
“You really canceled everything?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel…”
“I’m not punishing her.””
He looked at me.
“I’m accepting what she showed me.””
Those words stayed with me.
Because Vanessa had spent years showing people who she was.
We were just too afraid to believe it.
“What happens now?”” I asked.
Daniel looked down.
“I don’t know.””
A shadow crossed his face.
“But I know I can’t marry someone who can hurt a person and call it a joke.””
Before I could answer, another voice interrupted.
“Wow.””
We turned.
Vanessa stood several feet away.
Her sunglasses covered her eyes.
But not her anger.
“You two look comfortable.””
Daniel stood.
“Vanessa.””
She laughed.
“No, don’t stop. I’m actually impressed.””
“Vanessa, this isn’t—”
“Isn’t what?”” she snapped.
“Isn’t exactly what it looks like?””
People in the lobby started looking over.
Vanessa didn’t care.
“You canceled our honeymoon because of her?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I canceled it because of your actions.””
“My actions?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at me.
“She’s always been jealous of me.””
I froze.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“She ruined everything.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Vanessa, I was underwater.””
“And now everyone is obsessed with you again.””
The words came out so naturally.
Like she had been thinking them for years.
Daniel stared at her.
“You really believe that?””
Her silence was the answer.
Then she whispered:
“You always choose her.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Because suddenly, I understood.
This was never about the pool.
It was about something much older.
Something buried beneath years of competition and resentment.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who else knows?””
Vanessa frowned.
“Knows what?””
“That you’ve felt this way about your sister for years.””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Daniel had seen it too.
And then Vanessa said the one thing that made my blood run cold.
“Ask Emily what happened the night our father died.””
I stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at me.
“What is she talking about?””
I couldn’t answer.
May you like
Because there was a secret I had spent ten years trying to forget.
And Vanessa knew exactly where to find it.
