Chapter 7: The Man Who Carried Richard’s Voice
Nobody in Miller’s Family Diner moved.
The voice outside the door had been calm.
Too calm.
A person who wanted to hurt someone would usually sound angry.
This man sounded certain.
Like he already knew how the story ended.
Marcus stood in front of me.
His body was tense, his shoulders squared.
But I could see the question in his eyes.
Who was this man?
And why did he sound like a ghost from my past?
Daniel looked terrified.
Not nervous.
Not worried.
Terrified.
I had seen fear on many faces throughout my life.
Fear of losing money.
Fear of embarrassment.
Fear of bad news.
But Daniel looked like a man who had just seen the past come back to collect a debt.
"Daniel," Marcus whispered.
The old man didn't answer.
"Who is he?""
Daniel's lips moved.
No sound came out.
Victor stepped closer.
"He isn't alone.""
Everyone looked at him.
"What does that mean?"" Thomas asked.
Victor looked toward the window.
"The people who protected Richard don't work alone.""
Jake tightened his fists.
"So there are more outside?""
Victor nodded.
The diner suddenly felt much smaller.
I looked around.
The elderly couple near the counter had their hands clasped together.
The waitress, Sarah, stood frozen behind the register.
They had nothing to do with this.
They were strangers caught inside my nightmare.
"Marcus," I whispered.
He turned.
"Yes?""
"Get them out.""
He frowned.
"What?""
"The customers.""
His eyes softened.
"Mom—"
"Please.""
I looked at the frightened people around us.
"I've already lost enough people.""
Marcus understood.
He nodded.
Then he looked at Thomas.
"Get everyone to the kitchen.""
Thomas immediately moved.
"Everyone, stay calm.""
The confidence in his voice surprised me.
People listened.
The biker gang that had frightened everyone when I first entered the diner was now quietly guiding strangers to safety.
Not threatening them.
Protecting them.
The irony almost hurt.
The men everyone feared were the only ones trying to help.
Sarah looked at me as she passed.
"Are you okay?""
I forced myself to nod.
"No.""
The honesty surprised her.
Then I added:
"But I will be.""
She squeezed my shoulder.
And disappeared into the kitchen.
The front door shook again.
This time harder.
The voice returned.
"Elizabeth.""
My entire body froze.
Nobody called me that way.
Not anymore.
Not with that tone.
Like they owned my name.
Marcus noticed.
"Do you know him?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Then I stopped.
Because something inside me remembered.
Not his face.
Not his voice.
Something else.
A phrase.
A sentence.
From forty-two years ago.
I looked at Daniel.
"You said Richard had help.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Was this man part of it?""
Daniel looked toward the door.
"I don't know.""
Victor spoke quietly.
"I do.""
Everyone turned.
Victor's face had lost all color.
"Who is he?"" Marcus asked.
Victor swallowed.
"His name is Adrian Cross.""
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to Daniel.
The old man closed his eyes.
"No.""
Marcus looked between them.
"Who is Adrian Cross?""
Victor answered.
"The person who made Richard Hale untouchable.""
A silence followed.
Then Jake laughed once.
A cold, angry laugh.
"So let me understand this.""
He pointed toward the door.
"My entire childhood was stolen.""
He looked at Victor.
"My mother was erased.""
He looked at Daniel.
"Records were destroyed.""
Then he looked toward Adrian outside.
"And now the man behind all of it is standing outside?""
Nobody answered.
Because there was nothing to say.
Marcus approached the door.
I grabbed his arm.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"I need answers.""
"I know.""
"Then let me get them.""
I shook my head.
"You don't know what people like him do.""
Marcus held my gaze.
"Neither did you.""
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
I spent my entire life running from shadows.
But my son had spent his life facing them.
Slowly, I released his arm.
Marcus unlocked the door.
But he did not open it.
He spoke through the glass.
"Adrian Cross.""
The man outside smiled.
"So you know my name.""
"I know enough.""
Adrian looked past him.
His eyes found me.
And for a second, I felt like I was twenty-nine years old again.
A young mother.
A frightened woman.
A person who trusted the wrong man.
"Elizabeth.""
My stomach turned.
"How do you know me?""
Adrian's expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Something worse.
Recognition.
"I knew your husband.""
"I didn't ask that.""
A faint smile appeared.
"You haven't changed.""
The words made my blood run cold.
Because they sounded personal.
Marcus noticed.
"What does that mean?""
Adrian ignored him.
"You always asked the right questions.""
I stared.
"What?""
"You were the only person who made Richard nervous.""
I felt my heartbeat increase.
"I was his wife.""
"No.""
Adrian shook his head.
"You were his problem.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Watch your words.""
Adrian finally looked at him.
"You have your mother's temper.""
The four brothers froze.
Marcus's face changed.
"You knew us?""
Adrian didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Thomas moved forward.
"You knew us before we knew ourselves.""
Adrian looked at him.
"Yes.""
Jake's voice became quiet.
"Why?""
Adrian sighed.
"Because Richard paid me to watch.""
My hands went cold.
"You watched my children?""
Adrian looked at me.
"I watched them grow.""
The pain was immediate.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
"You knew where they were.""
"Yes.""
"You knew they were alive.""
"Yes.""
My voice broke.
"And you let me suffer?""
For the first time, Adrian looked uncomfortable.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
"You don't understand.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"I understand perfectly.""
The room went silent.
"I lost my children.""
My voice shook.
"I spent forty-two years wondering if they were hungry. If they were safe. If they remembered me.""
I pointed toward my sons.
"And you knew.""
Adrian looked away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
He was ashamed.
Even if he wouldn't admit it.
Marcus opened the door.
"What do you want?""
Adrian looked at him.
"I want the folder.""
Nobody spoke.
There it was.
The real reason.
Not concern.
Not truth.
The folder.
The evidence.
Marcus laughed.
"Of course.""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You don't understand what you're holding.""
Thomas stepped beside Marcus.
"We understand enough.""
"No.""
Adrian shook his head.
"If those documents become public, people will get hurt.""
Jake stared.
"People who helped steal children?""
Adrian didn't respond.
Victor stepped forward.
"You still believe Richard was right.""
Adrian looked at him.
"You of all people don't get to judge me.""
Daniel flinched.
The words landed.
Because they were meant to.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"What happened between you two?""
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Then down.
"I tried to expose Richard.""
"When?""
"Twenty years ago.""
My eyes widened.
"Twenty years ago?""
Daniel nodded.
"I found proof.""
Adrian's expression changed.
"And I stopped you.""
The honesty shocked everyone.
Daniel looked at him.
"Yes.""
Marcus's voice was quiet.
"Why?""
Adrian stared through the doorway.
"Because Richard threatened my family.""
Nobody spoke.
For a moment, he wasn't the enemy.
He was another person trapped by Richard Hale.
But then I remembered.
He still knew.
He knew my sons existed.
He knew I was alive.
And he did nothing.
I stepped closer.
"Where is Richard's evidence?""
Adrian looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I stared.
"You're lying.""
"No.""
"You worked with him.""
"Yes.""
"Then you know.""
Adrian shook his head.
"Richard never trusted anyone completely.""
Victor nodded.
"He's right.""
Marcus looked at him.
"What are you saying?""
Victor opened the folder.
"There was one place Richard kept things nobody else knew about.""
Daniel looked up.
"No.""
Marcus turned.
"Where?""
Victor hesitated.
Then he said:
"Under Black Ridge.""
The name echoed.
The place that had followed us from the beginning.
My missing children.
My fake death.
Richard's secrets.
Everything led there.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"Why are you really here?""
Adrian was silent.
Then he reached inside his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he pulled out a small metal key.
Old.
Rusty.
Worn.
He held it up.
"I came because Richard left me one final instruction.""
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
"What instruction?""
Adrian looked at me.
His voice dropped.
"He told me that if Elizabeth Carter ever found her sons...""
A pause.
The diner lights flickered.
May you like
Then Adrian finished:
"I was supposed to make sure she never reached Black Ridge.""
