Chapter 5: The Life They Stole From Me
The death certificate sat on the table between us like a weapon.
My name.
My date of birth.
A date of death that never happened.
I stared at it until the letters stopped looking real.
For forty-two years, I had been alive.
I had woken up every morning.
I had paid bills.
I had gone to work.
I had grown older.
I had cried myself to sleep wondering where my sons were.
And somewhere, inside a government file, I was a dead woman.
A woman who had never existed.
"How?"" I whispered.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Victor.
The man who had helped Richard Hale erase my entire life.
"How did you do this?""
Victor did not look away.
"I didn't.""
My fingers curled around the edge of the table.
"You just admitted you helped him.""
"I did.""
"Then don't insult me by pretending you weren't part of it.""
A flicker of shame crossed his face.
Good.
For the first time in decades, someone who hurt me looked ashamed.
"I was young," he said.
The anger inside me burned hotter.
"Young?""
My voice rose.
"You were old enough to sign papers. Old enough to understand what a mother losing four children meant.""
Victor lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You don't.""
The entire diner watched silently.
Even the customers who had been whispering earlier had stopped.
They were seeing something nobody should ever have to witness.
A mother confronting the people who stole her children.
Marcus placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
I looked at him.
His eyes were full of anger.
Not at me.
For me.
"I need answers," he said.
Victor nodded.
"You deserve them.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Start talking.""
Victor pulled out a chair.
He didn't sit.
"I knew Richard Hale before he met Elizabeth.""
My stomach tightened.
"You knew him before me?""
Victor nodded.
"He was ambitious.""
The way he said it made the word sound dangerous.
"He wanted influence. Wealth. A legacy.""
Thomas crossed his arms.
"And stealing babies was part of his legacy?""
Victor looked at him.
"Not at first.""
Nobody spoke.
Victor continued.
"Richard believed he was entitled to everything he wanted.""
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
"That sounds exactly like him.""
Victor glanced at me.
"He wanted children.""
Marcus's expression changed.
"What?""
Victor looked at the four brothers.
"Richard couldn't have children.""
Silence.
I felt the room shift.
I knew.
I had known.
But hearing it said aloud brought back memories I had buried.
The hospital visits.
The years of trying.
The doctors telling us there was nothing wrong with me.
Richard sitting beside me with that cold expression.
Blaming me.
Always blaming me.
Victor continued.
"When Elizabeth became pregnant, Richard saw it as a miracle.""
My eyes hardened.
"It was.""
Victor nodded.
"But he didn't see it as a gift.""
He looked at Marcus.
"He saw it as proof that he could have what he always wanted.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"He wanted sons.""
"Yes.""
"And when he had them, he took them.""
Victor looked down.
"Yes.""
The word was barely audible.
I closed my eyes.
Forty-two years.
Forty-two years searching.
And the answer had been sitting in front of me.
"Why didn't you tell someone?""
Victor looked at Daniel.
Then away.
"Because Richard controlled everything.""
Daniel spoke quietly.
"That's not true.""
Everyone looked at him.
Victor's face changed.
Daniel stepped closer.
"You were afraid.""
Victor swallowed.
"Yes.""
The honesty surprised me.
"I was.""
He looked at the floor.
"Richard had powerful friends. Judges. Hospital officials. Police contacts.""
Marcus stared.
"So everyone was bought?""
Victor shook his head.
"No.""
"Then what?""
"Some people were afraid.""
The diner fell silent.
I looked at my sons.
Four grown men who had spent their lives believing a lie.
"Where did he take you?""
Marcus looked at Victor.
"Answer that.""
Victor hesitated.
Then he opened the folder.
Inside were maps.
Photographs.
Records.
My heart raced.
"He moved you through different homes.""
Thomas frowned.
"Why?""
"To make tracking impossible.""
Jake looked sick.
"We were children.""
Victor nodded.
"I know.""
"How many homes?""
Victor looked at the papers.
"Seven.""
Luke stared.
"Seven?""
"Before Richard finally took legal guardianship.""
Marcus looked at the records.
"And Black Ridge?""
Victor became quiet.
"The final location.""
I felt a chill.
"What was Black Ridge?""
Victor looked at me.
"Richard's private property.""
My breathing stopped.
"Private property?""
He nodded.
"A large estate outside the city.""
Thomas looked confused.
"Why would he hide children on an estate?""
Victor looked at the four brothers.
"Because he wanted to build the perfect family.""
My stomach turned.
"Perfect?""
Victor nodded.
"Richard believed blood mattered more than love.""
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
"He didn't want adopted children.""
Victor looked at Marcus.
"He wanted his own sons.""
Marcus stared at him.
"So he stole us.""
"Yes.""
"And raised us like we were his.""
"Yes.""
Jake stood suddenly.
His chair moved backward.
"Wait.""
Everyone looked at him.
His face had changed.
"What?""
He looked at Daniel.
"You said you thought our mother died.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Jake looked at me.
"But Dad told us she abandoned us.""
My heart broke.
"I never abandoned you.""
"I know.""
The answer came so quickly it surprised me.
Jake looked away.
"I know.""
Those two words almost destroyed me.
Because they meant he believed me.
After all these years.
Marcus looked at Victor.
"What else?""
Victor closed the folder.
"There is something you need to understand.""
"What?""
"Richard didn't erase Elizabeth because of you.""
My eyebrows pulled together.
"What does that mean?""
Victor looked at me.
"He erased her because she found something.""
My blood went cold.
"What?""
Daniel looked away.
He already knew.
Marcus noticed.
"You know.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I suspected.""
I turned toward him.
"Suspected what?""
Daniel slowly reached into his coat.
He pulled out another envelope.
This one was smaller.
Older.
My name was not written on it.
Instead, there was one word.
*Carter.*
My heart stopped.
"Where did you get that?""
Daniel looked at me.
"From Richard's office.""
"When?""
"Three years after the boys disappeared.""
My hands shook.
"You kept it?""
"I didn't know what it meant.""
"Open it.""
Daniel hesitated.
Marcus nodded.
"Open it.""
Slowly, Daniel removed the paper inside.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
"What?""
He looked at me.
"Elizabeth...""
"What?""
His voice became quiet.
"This isn't about Richard taking your children.""
The room went still.
"Then what is it about?""
Daniel handed the paper to Marcus.
Marcus read it.
Then Thomas.
Then Jake.
Then Luke.
Each face became more serious.
Finally, Marcus looked at me.
"Mom.""
I swallowed.
"What?""
He held the paper.
"It's a list.""
"Of what?""
He looked at the names.
"People Richard paid.""
My heart sank.
"How many?""
Marcus looked at the page.
"Twenty-three.""
I closed my eyes.
"Twenty-three people helped him.""
"No.""
Marcus's voice was different now.
Colder.
"Twenty-three people helped him hide something else.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He turned the paper around.
At the bottom of the list was one final name.
A name that made Victor take a step back.
A name that none of us expected.
A name I had spent my entire life trying to forgive.
Marcus whispered:
"Elizabeth Carter.""
I stared at the page.
My own name.
Under the word:
*TARGET.*
May you like
And beneath it, written in Richard's handwriting, were five words.
*She knows what we did.*
