Chapter 9: The Final Secret
The moment Daniel said the ledger was gone, everyone became silent.
Not confused.
Not relieved.
Afraid.
Because if Daniel was telling the truth, someone had taken the one thing everyone had spent seventeen years searching for.
The only proof.
The only weapon.
I looked at him.
“Who has it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Answer him.””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“You really don’t know?””
Michael frowned.
“Know what?””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You’re still protecting her.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the front door.
Then back at us.
“Claire.””
I felt the room shift.
“No.””
Daniel smiled.
“You still trust her.””
I looked at Michael.
He wasn’t surprised.
That scared me.
“You knew?””
Michael looked away.
“Not everything.””
I turned to him.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice echoed through the empty house.
“I’m done hearing that.””
Michael nodded.
“You’re right.””
He looked at me.
“You deserve everything.””
Daniel leaned against the wall.
“Good. Maybe now someone will finally tell him.””
I turned toward him.
“You’re going to explain.””
Daniel smiled.
“Your father was obsessed with control.””
I said nothing.
“He didn’t trust anyone.””
Daniel continued.
“Not business partners. Not employees. Not even family.””
He looked at Michael.
“But he trusted one person.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward the driveway.
Claire.
She was standing outside the car.
She had followed us.
I stared at her.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire looked like she was carrying the weight of the world.
“I was going to tell you.””
I laughed.
“Of course you were.””
She walked closer.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“Not this time.””
She stopped.
Daniel watched silently.
Claire looked at Michael.
“I’m sorry.””
Michael looked devastated.
“For what?””
She swallowed.
“For lying to you too.””
The words shocked me.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“The ledger wasn’t hidden here.””
Daniel smiled.
“Finally.””
Michael stared at her.
“You knew?””
Claire nodded.
“I knew where it was.””
“How?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Your mother gave it to me.””
Michael froze.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she died.””
Everything became quiet.
“My mother trusted you?””
Claire nodded.
“She knew your father was going to destroy everything.””
I looked at Claire.
“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was protecting you.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“But this time, it’s true.””
She stepped closer.
“Your father didn’t leave the ledger because he wanted it found.””
“What?””
“He left it because he knew someone would come looking.””
Michael frowned.
“A trap.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Claire looked at him.
“Your father knew you would betray him.””
Daniel went still.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“The ledger isn’t just evidence against your father.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What is it?””
Claire whispered:
“It’s evidence against everyone who helped him.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where is it?””
Claire looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.””
A pause.
“You’re in it.””
Daniel’s face changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
Real fear.
Claire continued.
“Your father knew you were trying to take everything from him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“He recorded everything.””
Daniel’s confidence disappeared.
I looked at Claire.
“Where is the ledger?””
She looked at me.
And for once, she didn’t look afraid.
“It’s somewhere your father knew you would never look.””
I waited.
Then she said:
“Inside the one thing you kept after his death.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“The old clock.””
I turned.
The clock.
The one sitting in my living room.
The one my father loved.
The one Michael mentioned the night he returned.
I suddenly understood.
My father had hidden the truth inside the only thing I never questioned.
Daniel moved toward the door.
But Michael blocked him.
“You’re not leaving.””
Daniel stared.
“You think you can stop me?””
Michael smiled sadly.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“But he can.””
Daniel looked confused.
Then I realized what Michael meant.
For seventeen years, I had been the person everyone tried to protect.
The person everyone lied to.
The person everyone underestimated.
I walked past them.
I picked up my phone.
And I called the police.
Daniel laughed.
“You think that changes anything?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Because for the first time in my life, I finally knew the truth.
“Because this time, nobody is deciding for me.””
Minutes later, sirens filled the street.
Daniel stood silently as officers entered.
But before they took him away, he looked at me.
“You still don’t know the worst part.””
I stared.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Ask your wife why your father chose her.””
Then he was gone.
I turned slowly.
Claire looked terrified.
Not because Daniel had been arrested.
Because she knew what came next.
“What did he mean?””
Claire looked at the floor.
Then she whispered:
“Your father didn’t choose me by accident.””
A pause.
“He chose me because I was already connected to your family.””
I stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Claire looked up.
May you like
And the answer destroyed the last piece of my childhood.
“I’m not who you think I am.””
