Chapter 5: The Debt Claire Was Hiding

The next morning, I learned something terrifying.

Fear has a sound.

It isn’t screaming.

It isn’t panic.

It is the quiet voice of someone trying desperately not to let their hands shake.

That was Claire.

She stood in the kitchen making coffee while Michael sat at the table checking the windows every few minutes.

Nobody slept.

Not after the message.

Not after seeing Lily’s picture.

I watched Claire pour coffee into a mug she wasn’t going to drink.

“You knew this would happen.””

She stopped.

“What?””

“You knew someone might come after us.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“I knew it was possible.””

“Possible?””

I stared at her.

“My daughter’s picture was sent to my phone.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice rose.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at Michael.

“You too.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

That was the problem.

Neither of them argued.

Neither of them tried to make me feel crazy.

They knew they had destroyed my trust.

Michael placed his phone on the table.

“There’s something you need to know about the money.””

I looked at Claire.

“The twenty thousand?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Finally.””

Claire sat down.

“I didn’t steal it.””

I laughed.

“Really?””

“No.””

She looked directly at me.

“I moved it because I was paying someone to keep your family safe.””

The room went silent.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it looks.””

“It looks like my wife secretly emptied our savings.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Claire looked at Michael.

He nodded.

“She was paying a private investigator.””

I stared.

“What?””

Claire reached into her purse and pulled out a folder.

“I hired him six months ago.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

And my father’s name.

Again.

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I started receiving messages.””

“What kind of messages?””

She handed me a piece of paper.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

*Some secrets don’t stay buried.*

I looked up.

“When?””

“Eight months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””

The words hurt.

“Not even me?””

She looked down.

“I was afraid telling you would put you in danger.””

Michael spoke quietly.

“She was right.””

I looked at him.

“Stop saying that.””

“I’m sorry.””

I threw the paper onto the table.

“You both keep making decisions for me.””

Nobody spoke.

“I’m not a child.””

“I know,” Michael said.

“Then why did everyone decide I couldn’t handle the truth?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because the truth almost got me killed.””

The kitchen went quiet.

He continued.

“After I found out what Dad was doing, I went to the police.””

“And?””

“Someone inside the department warned him.””

I froze.

“You’re saying the police were involved?””

“I’m saying I didn’t know who wasn’t involved.””

The answer terrified me.

Claire reached across the table.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then opened another file.

A birth certificate.

I frowned.

“What am I looking at?””

Michael’s face changed.

“Ethan.””

I looked closer.

The name on the document wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Michael’s.

It was my father’s.

But the mother’s name was someone else.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

“What is this?””

Claire whispered:

“Your father had another family.””

I stared at the paper.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He had another son.””

My hands went numb.

Another son.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life hidden from me.

“Who?””

Michael looked toward the front window.

Like he was afraid someone might hear.

“His name is Daniel.””

The name meant nothing.

Until it did.

Because suddenly I remembered.

A box in my father’s office.

A photo I found when I was twelve.

A young man standing beside my father.

When I asked who it was, Dad took the picture away.

He told me:

“Someone you don’t need to know.””

I whispered:

“Daniel.””

Michael nodded.

“He’s the reason I disappeared.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because Daniel didn’t want to inherit our father’s empire.””

“What empire?””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“The kind built on lies.””

Before I could ask another question, the front door opened.

All three of us turned.

Lily stood there.

Her backpack slipped from her shoulder.

Her face was pale.

“Dad?””

I rushed toward her.

“Lily, are you okay?””

She nodded.

But she wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at Michael.

Her eyes narrowed.

Then she whispered:

“I know you.””

Everyone froze.

Michael stepped forward.

“What?””

Lily’s voice trembled.

“I’ve seen you before.””

I felt my heart drop.

“When?””

She swallowed.

“At Grandma’s house.””

My blood ran cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Lily looked at Michael.

“You were there the day Grandma died.””

Michael’s face lost all color.

And then Lily said the words that changed everything.

“You weren’t hiding from my grandfather.””

May you like

A pause.

“You were hiding from my grandmother.””
