Chapter 9: The Secret That Changed Everything
The room felt completely still.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Malcolm held the DNA test like it weighed a hundred pounds.
Tasha’s face was full of fear.
Not the fear of being exposed.
Something deeper.
The fear of losing the last thing she still had.
“Why?”” Malcolm asked.
His voice wasn’t angry.
That almost made it worse.
“Why did you do this?””
Tasha wiped her tears.
“I was trying to protect him.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I was.””
“No.””
Malcolm shook his head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
The words hit hard.
Because they were true.
Tasha looked down.
“Yes.””
For the first time, she stopped making excuses.
“I was scared.””
Malcolm stared at the paper.
“The test says Evan is not Isaiah’s biological father.””
Silence.
I felt the entire world stop.
Tasha closed her eyes.
“I know.””
Malcolm looked up.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“Then who is?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence created another wound.
“Who?””
Tasha whispered:
“I don’t know.””
Malcolm stepped back.
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“I mean Evan isn’t his father.””
“Then why did you let him threaten you?””
“Because he believed he was.””
The pieces started falling into place.
The photograph.
The money.
The custody agreement.
The fear.
All of it.
But one question remained.
“Who took the test?”” Malcolm asked.
Tasha looked at him.
“I did.””
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
Malcolm stared.
“Two years ago?””
She nodded.
“I was trying to find out the truth.””
“And then?””
“I got scared.””
“Again.””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
That was the hardest part.
Not that she had been afraid.
That she kept choosing fear over honesty.
Malcolm looked away.
“So Evan isn’t Isaiah’s father.””
“No.””
“Then why did he think he was?””
Tasha took a deep breath.
“Because I told him he was.””
The confession shocked all of us.
“You lied?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because when Isaiah was born, Evan was the only person from that time who knew I was pregnant.””
Malcolm looked confused.
“Explain.””
Tasha sat down.
“When I was pregnant, I was confused. I was seeing two people.””
She swallowed.
“You and Evan.””
The words hurt.
But Malcolm didn’t interrupt.
“When Isaiah was born, I didn’t know who his father was.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Tasha…”
“I know.””
She looked at Malcolm.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
“Then why?””
“Because you were there.””
Her voice broke.
“You held him before anyone else. You stayed. You loved him.””
Malcolm looked down.
“I thought he was mine.””
“He was yours.””
“That’s not the same.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It isn’t.””
A long silence followed.
Then Malcolm asked:
“So whose child is he?””
Tasha looked at the floor.
“I was hoping you could help me find out.””
That sentence changed everything.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t about a custody battle.
It was about finding the truth.
Rachel helped them contact the hospital.
The original birth records were requested.
And two days later, they received a call.
The hospital had found a discrepancy.
A paperwork error.
A record that had been corrected years ago but never properly updated.
Malcolm and I sat in the living room when Rachel arrived.
She looked serious.
“Before I tell you, I need everyone to understand something.””
Malcolm nodded.
“What?””
“This changes nothing about who Isaiah loves.””
He looked toward the stairs.
“Just tell me.””
Rachel opened the folder.
“The biological father was identified.””
Tasha covered her mouth.
Malcolm looked at the papers.
Then froze.
“Who?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then answered.
“The records show Isaiah’s biological father is…”
She stopped.
And I saw Malcolm’s expression change before she even finished.
Because he recognized the name.
A name connected to his own past.
A person nobody expected.
Rachel placed the document on the table.
And the name at the top made Malcolm whisper:
“No…”
Because Isaiah’s biological father wasn’t Evan.
It wasn’t some stranger.
It was someone who had been in their lives all along.
Someone Malcolm had trusted.
Someone who had been standing close enough to watch Isaiah grow up.

The name on the paper was:
*Daniel Reed.*
