Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Money

The next morning, Malcolm didn’t go to work.

That alone told me how serious everything had become.

My son was not someone who missed responsibilities.

He worked through headaches.

Through exhaustion.

Through heartbreak.

But that morning, he sat at the kitchen table with cold coffee in front of him and a stack of papers beside him.

The photograph.

The bank statements.

Isaiah’s letter.

Three pieces of a puzzle that had destroyed everything he thought he knew.

“Are you okay?”” I asked.

He looked up.

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

I sat beside him.

“Isaiah is real.””

He nodded.

“That’s the only thing I know.””

A small voice came from the doorway.

“Dad?””

Malcolm immediately covered the papers.

Isaiah stood there holding his school folder.

“I have a question.””

“Come here.””

The boy walked over.

“Is Mom in trouble?””

Malcolm looked at him carefully.

“No.””

“Are you mad at her?””

He paused.

Then answered honestly.

“I’m hurt.””

Isaiah looked down.

“Because of me?””

“No.””

Malcolm reached for his hand.

“Never because of you.””

Isaiah sat beside him.

“Adults always say that.””

“I mean it.””

The little boy looked at him.

“Promise?””

Malcolm squeezed his hand.

“Promise.””

After Isaiah left for school, Malcolm called Daniel again.

This time, Daniel answered immediately.

“You talked to her.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“You knew.””

Silence.

“You knew everything.””

Daniel sighed.

“I knew some things.””

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Make it sound smaller.””

Malcolm stood.

“You watched me raise that boy.””

“I know.””

“You watched me send money.””

“I know.””

“You watched him struggle.””

Daniel’s voice changed.

“I didn’t know about that.””

“But you knew enough.””

Another silence.

Then Daniel said:

“I tried to help.””

Malcolm laughed.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“By doing what?””

“By keeping Isaiah’s father away.””

Malcolm froze.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“His biological father wasn’t supposed to come back.””

“Why?””

“Because he wasn’t a good person.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“Who is he?”” Malcolm asked.

Daniel hesitated.

Then said a name.

A name that changed everything.

“Evan Carter.””

Malcolm’s face changed.

I saw recognition.

“You know him?””

“No.””

But the way he said it told me he did.

A few seconds later, Malcolm searched something on his phone.

His expression became darker.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

It was a news article.

A photograph.

A headline.

*Local Business Owner Accused of Fraud and Multiple Financial Scams.*

The man in the picture was the same man from the photograph.

Evan.

The man who had been threatening Tasha.

The man who had been receiving Malcolm’s money.

“This can’t be happening,” Malcolm whispered.

But it was.

And suddenly, the missing money wasn’t the biggest problem.

The biggest problem was that Evan knew where Isaiah lived.

That afternoon, Malcolm picked Isaiah up from school early.

When they arrived home, there was a black car parked across the street.

Malcolm noticed it immediately.

“Stay inside,” he told Isaiah.

The boy looked confused.

“Dad?””

“Go inside with Grandma.””

I watched from the doorway as Malcolm walked toward the car.

The driver’s window slowly lowered.

A man looked out.

Older.

Confident.

Cold.

Evan Carter.

Malcolm stopped.

“You.””

Evan smiled.

“So you finally figured it out.””

Malcolm’s fists tightened.

“What do you want?””

Evan leaned back.

“I think you know.””

“No.””

Malcolm stepped closer.

“You’re going to tell me.””

Evan smiled again.

But this time there was no warmth.

“Your son has my blood.””

Malcolm’s face hardened.

“He has my heart.””

For the first time, Evan’s smile disappeared.

Then he reached into his jacket.

And pulled out a document.

“I think you should read this.””

Malcolm took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his face went pale.

Because the document wasn’t about Isaiah’s father.

It was about custody.

And at the bottom was a signature.

Tasha’s.

Dated three months earlier.

May you like

A secret agreement.

One that could take Isaiah away forever.
