Chapter 8: The Recording My Mother Left Behind

Nobody listened to Rachel.

Not this time.

My father clicked the file.

The screen loaded slowly.

Every second felt endless.

Then my mother's face appeared again.

This time, she looked different.

Not afraid.

Determined.

My hand covered my mouth.

"Mom...""

The word slipped out before I could stop it.

My father reached for my hand.

Neither of us looked away.

My mother's voice filled the room.

"If this recording is being watched, then I was right.""

She paused.

"Someone betrayed me.""

Rachel began crying quietly.

Mia looked at her.

Confusion.

Fear.

Pain.

My mother continued.

"I spent weeks trying to figure out who was helping Mark.""

The video shook slightly, like she had recorded it secretly.

"I thought it was Daniel.""

My father closed his eyes.

"But I was wrong.""

I looked at him.

He opened his eyes.

My mother smiled sadly.

"Daniel always tried to carry everyone's problems alone.""

A tear fell down my father's face.

"I should have trusted him.""

The room was silent.

Then my mother said:

"The person helping Mark was Rachel.""

Mia made a sound like she couldn't breathe.

"No.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

"No, no...""

My mother continued.

"Rachel had access to documents. She knew our schedule. She knew when I was meeting people.""

The video showed papers on a desk.

"I found proof.""

My mother's voice lowered.

"She wasn't just helping him hide money.""

My father leaned closer.

"What?""

Then my mother's final words came.

"She was helping him destroy evidence.""

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

For a long moment, Rachel just stood there.

Then she laughed.

Quietly.

Almost sadly.

Everyone looked at her.

"You think that's enough?""

My father stared.

"What?""

She wiped her tears.

"One video.""

Her expression changed.

"You think that proves everything?""

My father looked devastated.

"Rachel.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"You all want me to be the villain because it's easier.""

I stared at her.

"You lied.""

She looked at me.

"I made mistakes.""

"You helped someone hurt my mother.""

Her eyes hardened.

"Your mother was never as innocent as you think.""

My father's voice turned dangerous.

"Don't.""

Rachel ignored him.

"She was going to leave.""

The room froze.

"What?""

Rachel looked at me.

"Your mother had plans.""

My heart pounded.

"What plans?""

"To take you and move away.""

I looked at my father.

"Is that true?""

He didn't answer immediately.

That scared me.

Finally, he whispered:

"Yes.""

The pain was immediate.

"She wanted to leave?""

"Not because she didn't love us.""

My father stepped closer.

"Because she was scared.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone was making decisions for me.""

My voice broke.

"Everyone.""

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

My entire life had been shaped by secrets.

By people deciding what I could handle.

What I deserved to know.

Rachel looked at me.

"I was trying to keep this family together.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You were trying to control it.""

Her face fell.

For the first time, she had no response.

Then the doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

My father walked toward the door.

Before opening it, he looked at me.

"Stay behind me.""

I almost smiled.

After everything, he still wanted to protect me.

He opened the door.

Two police officers stood outside.

Behind them was a woman holding a folder.

My father looked confused.

"Who are you?""

The woman looked at Rachel.

"My name is Detective Collins.""

Rachel went pale.

"I...""

The detective held up the folder.

"We received new evidence regarding the death of Emily Parker.""

My heart stopped.

My mother's name.

After ten years.

The detective continued:

"We also received information that someone involved has been hiding evidence.""

She looked directly at Rachel.

"Mrs. Rachel Parker, we need to ask you some questions.""

Mia stepped back.

"No.""

Rachel looked at everyone.

At my father.

At me.

At Mia.

And for the first time, she looked completely alone.

But before she walked outside, she turned toward me.

And whispered:

"Your mother left one more message.""

I froze.

"What?""

Rachel smiled faintly.

"One she never wanted your father to find.""

Then she walked away.

May you like

And I realized the truth wasn't over.

It had only just begun.
