Chapter 2: The Price of Cruelty

Mia always believed she understood my father.

That was her biggest mistake.

She thought because he loved her, he would always protect her from consequences.

She forgot something important.

My father loved fairness more.

The graduation ceremony was supposed to begin in two hours.

Instead, our family stood inside my bedroom surrounded by ashes, silence, and a truth nobody wanted to face.

"Dad, you can't be serious," Mia said.

My father looked at her phone on the bed.

"I am.""

"You can't punish me over a dress.""

He looked at the burned fabric again.

"You keep saying that word.""

"What word?""

"Dress.""

He pointed toward the floor.

"You say it like it means nothing.""

Mia crossed her arms.

"Because it doesn't.""

My father's jaw tightened.

"Then why did you destroy it?""

She didn't answer.

That was the first time I saw her realize she had no excuse.

Rachel stepped forward.

"Daniel, this has gone too far.""

He turned toward her.

"No.""

His voice was calm.

"This went too far when our daughter walked into her room and found something she spent months working for destroyed.""

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

"You don't understand Mia.""

"I understand exactly what happened.""

"No, you don't.""

My father stared at her.

"Then explain it.""

Rachel opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Because there was no explanation that sounded good.

Mia grabbed her handbag from the floor.

"So what? You're taking away my stuff because you're mad?""

My father shook his head.

"I'm not taking away your stuff.""

"Then what are you doing?""

"I'm removing the things you think make you better than everyone else.""

Her face changed.

"Mia, you need to understand something," my father continued.

"Money doesn't make someone valuable.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Easy for you to say.""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"It was easy for her to say.""

That sentence stayed with me.

Because my father knew.

He knew how hard I had worked.

He knew the nights I came home exhausted from work.

He knew the times I skipped buying lunch because I wanted to save another few dollars.

He had watched me build something.

Mia had destroyed it in seconds.

My father walked out of the room.

Everyone followed.

Except me.

I stayed behind and picked up the pieces.

A few minutes later, my father came back holding something.

A small box.

He placed it on my bed.

"I bought this last week.""

I looked at him.

"What is it?""

"Open it.""

Inside was a necklace.

Simple.

Silver.

Beautiful.

My breath caught.

"I thought you said you didn't want expensive things.""

I smiled sadly.

"I don't.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

Then he looked toward the hallway.

"But I wanted you to have something that nobody could burn.""

My eyes filled with tears.

For the first time all morning, I let myself cry.

Not because of the dress.

Because someone finally saw me.

My father hugged me.

And quietly said, "I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner.""

That hurt.

Because I knew what he meant.

He wasn't only talking about today.

He was talking about every small moment he had missed.

Every time Mia made a cruel comment.

Every time Rachel dismissed my feelings.

Every time I smiled and pretended I was okay.

After the ceremony, my father still made sure I walked across the stage.

I wore an old black dress from my closet.

It wasn't perfect.

But when my name was called, I looked toward the crowd.

My father was standing.

Clapping harder than anyone.

Mia didn't come.

Neither did Rachel.

At first, I was hurt.

But then something strange happened.

I realized I wasn't looking for their approval anymore.

I had spent years hoping Mia would finally see me as a sister.

Hoping Rachel would treat me like family.

Hoping everyone would notice how much I tried.

That day, I stopped hoping.

And I started watching.

Because after the ceremony, when we returned home, I saw something that made me realize my father's punishment was only beginning.

Mia was standing in the kitchen.

Holding a letter.

Her face was completely white.

"Dad," she whispered.

He looked up.

"What?""

She slowly unfolded the paper.

"Why did the bank send me a notice saying my credit card has been frozen?""

My father looked at her.

May you like

And then he said something that changed everything.

"Because tomorrow morning, we're going to discuss every single thing you've been hiding from this family.""
