Chapter 7: The Evidence Hidden for Ten Years
Nobody moved.
Mark stood in our living room like he belonged there.
Like he hadn't just walked into the middle of a family falling apart.
My father stepped forward.
"You need to leave.""
Mark smiled.
"Still pretending you're in control?""
My father's expression hardened.
"You have five seconds.""
Mark laughed.
"You're exactly the same.""
He placed the briefcase on the table.
"Always angry. Always convinced you're the smartest person in the room.""
I looked at Mark.
"Why are you here?""
His eyes moved toward me.
And I hated the way he looked at me.
Like I was a problem he needed to solve.
"Because your father never told you the full story.""
My father interrupted.
"Don't listen to him.""
Mark opened the briefcase.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
"Ten years ago, your mother discovered something.""
He looked at me.
"Something your father didn't want anyone to know.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
Mark smiled.
"That night, your mother wasn't just going to expose me.""
My father went still.
"Mark.""
"She was going to expose him too.""
I stared at my father.
"What does he mean?""
My father looked away.
And that tiny movement destroyed me.
Because even after everything, there were still secrets.
"Answer me.""
My father's voice was quiet.
"Your mother thought I was involved.""
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"I wasn't.""
"But she thought you were?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
Mark smiled.
"Because she found evidence.""
My father looked at him.
"You planted that evidence.""
Mark shrugged.
"Can you prove it?""
That was the problem.
Nobody spoke.
Because for ten years, Mark had been hiding behind uncertainty.
My mother was dead.
The evidence was gone.
The truth was buried.
Until now.
Mark pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
It showed my mother standing outside a building.
With someone.
Someone I recognized.
My father.
"What is this?""
Mark leaned closer.
"Your mother took that picture the night she found out your father was meeting me secretly.""
I looked at my father.
"Is it true?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
My heart sank.
"Why?""
"Because I was investigating Mark.""
"Alone?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell Mom?""
His eyes filled with regret.
"Because I wanted to protect her.""
I almost laughed.
Everyone in this family used the same excuse.
Protect.
Protect.
Protect.
And somehow, every secret caused more damage than the truth would have.
Mark watched us.
Enjoying it.
"You see?""
He looked at me.
"Your family isn't what you thought.""
I looked at him.
"You came here because you wanted us to fight.""
His smile faded slightly.
"What?""
"You don't care about the truth.""
I stepped forward.
"You care about controlling what we believe.""
For the first time, Mark looked surprised.
My father looked at me.
And I saw something in his expression.
Pride.
Mark laughed.
"You think you're clever?""
"No.""
I looked at the documents.
"But I think you're scared.""
His face changed.
"Why would I be scared?""
"Because you came here instead of waiting.""
Silence.
I continued.
"People who have nothing to hide don't show up at someone's house with a briefcase full of old secrets.""
Mark's jaw tightened.
My father slowly picked up the flash drive.
"What's on this?""
Mark didn't answer.
That was the first crack.
My father plugged it into his laptop.
A video file appeared.
The date was ten years ago.
Everyone gathered around.
My hands shook as the video loaded.
Then my mother's face appeared on the screen.
She looked tired.
But alive.
My breath caught.
I hadn't seen her voice in years.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, something happened to me.""
Nobody spoke.
My father's face collapsed.
My mother continued.
"I need you to know one thing.""
She looked down.
Then back at the camera.
"Daniel is not the person you should be afraid of.""
Mark stepped backward.
"No.""
The video continued.
"The person helping Mark is someone inside our home.""
Rachel gasped.
The room went completely silent.
My mother looked terrified.
"I don't know who I can trust anymore.""
Then she said the sentence that changed everything.
"The person closest to me is the one who betrayed me.""
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Mia whispered:
"Mom...""
My father looked at Rachel.
And Rachel looked like she had just watched her entire life collapse.
Because she knew.
The video wasn't finished.
The file name showed one more recording.
Created two days later.
After my mother's death.
My father clicked it.
And before it played, Rachel said something that made my blood run cold.
"Daniel...""
May you like
Her voice shook.
"Don't watch that.""
