Chapter 8: The Enemy We Never Saw
The name on the screen belonged to someone I never expected.
Someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.
I stared at the message.
My fingers hovered above the keyboard.
I didn’t know what to feel.
Anger.
Confusion.
Fear.
Mia had spent years hurting me.
She had destroyed my dress.
Taken my money.
Made me feel invisible.
And now she was telling me she had been protecting me?
It sounded impossible.
My father saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
His face changed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You know this name?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Dad.””
He sat down slowly.
“I hoped this wasn’t true.””
The room felt smaller.
“Who is it?””
He looked at me.
“Your uncle.””
I blinked.
“My uncle?””
My father nodded.
“Your mother’s brother.””
I had only met him a few times as a child.
He lived in another state.
After my mother died, he disappeared from our lives.
I thought he didn’t care.
My father took a deep breath.
“Your mother and your uncle had a disagreement before she died.””
“About what?””
“About the inheritance.””
I felt sick.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece of my life.
My father explained.
My mother’s brother believed the money should have belonged to the entire family.
But my mother wanted it protected for me.
“She knew he was angry,” my father said.
“So she changed the trust?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Mia’s message again.
“What does he have to do with the scholarship?””
My father didn’t answer.
Because the truth was already forming.
Linda hadn’t acted alone.
Mia hadn’t acted alone.
There was someone else pulling the strings.
That evening, Mia came to the house.
I almost didn’t let her in.
But I needed answers.
She stood in the doorway looking nothing like the confident girl from months ago.
No designer clothes.
No perfect makeup.
Just Mia.
“You came.””
She nodded.
“I owe you the truth.””
I crossed my arms.
“I’ve heard that before.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
We sat across from each other.
For the first time in our lives, there was no competition.
No pretending.
Just two people who had been hurt.
“My uncle contacted me last year,” Mia said.
I froze.
“Why?””
“He knew about the trust.””
My hands tightened.
“He wanted access.””
“And you helped him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“At first.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I was angry at you.””
She looked away.
“I thought you had everything.””
I almost laughed.
“You thought I had everything?””
“I know now.””
Silence.
Then she continued.
“When he told me your scholarship could be taken away, I didn’t care.””
Her voice broke.
“But when I realized what he was doing…”
“What?””
“He wasn’t trying to help me.””
I stared.
“He was using me.””
Mia explained.
Her uncle had convinced her that if she helped remove obstacles from my life, the trust would become available.
He promised her money.
A new apartment.
A fresh start.
But then he started controlling her.
Threatening her.
Making her do more.
“The dress?””
She closed her eyes.
“I did that because I was angry.””
I nodded.
“Not because of him.””
“No.””
At least she admitted it.
The next morning, we met Daniel at his office.
He had already discovered more information.
“The attempted trust access was only one part.””
He opened a file.
“Your uncle also contacted the university.””
My heart sank.
“He changed my scholarship?””
Daniel nodded.
“He submitted false information.””
My father clenched his fist.
“Can he be charged?””
Daniel looked serious.
“Yes.””
But then he said something else.
“There is one problem.””
“What?””
“He wasn’t acting alone.””
Everyone became silent.
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“A second person signed the paperwork.””
My stomach twisted.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the page.
Then at me.
“The signature belongs to someone in this room.””
I looked around.
My father.
Mia.
Me.
Then Daniel slowly turned the document around.
The signature was clear.
My father stood immediately.
“That’s impossible.””
I stared at the name.
Because it wasn’t Linda.
It wasn’t Mia.
It wasn’t my uncle.
It was mine.
My signature.
A signature I never made.
And suddenly I understood.
May you like
Someone hadn’t just tried to steal my future.
They had planned to make it look like I helped them.
