Chapter 6: The Letter Hidden From Me
The document was only two pages.
But those two pages changed the way I saw my entire life.
My father read it once.
Then again.
His hands became unsteady.
“What is this?””
Linda crossed her arms.
“You tell me.””
I looked between them.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
That frightened me.
My father had always been the person with solutions.
The person who knew what to do.
But now he looked lost.
He handed me the paper.
I read the first line.
“Last will and personal instruction…”
My eyes moved down.
My mother’s name.
My mother’s signature.
My hands started shaking.
“She wrote this?””
My father nodded slowly.
“I didn’t know.””
The letter explained everything.
My mother had inherited money from her parents before she passed away.
Not millions.
But enough.
Enough to pay for my education.
Enough to give me security.
Enough to make sure I never struggled the way she had.
But there was one condition.
The money would remain protected until I turned twenty-one.
Unless someone attempted to use it before then.
Then it would automatically go into a trust controlled by an independent lawyer.
My mother had known people could make mistakes.
She had known grief could make people desperate.
She had planned ahead.
Because that was who she was.
Careful.
Loving.
Always protecting me.
Then I reached the last paragraph.
My mother had written:
“I want my daughter to grow up knowing she is loved, not knowing she is wealthy.””
I had to stop reading.
Because suddenly I could hear her voice.
The voice I barely remembered.
My father sat down.
“She knew.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She knew you would become strong.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“She knew money could attract the wrong people.””
I looked at Linda.
And suddenly everything made sense.
The resentment.
The jealousy.
The way Linda always minimized me.
She didn’t just dislike me.
She knew something.
“She knew about the money.””
Nobody answered.
That was enough.
My father turned toward Linda.
“How?””
Linda looked away.
“Mia found the paperwork years ago.””
My heart sank.
“Mia?””
“She was curious.””
I laughed.
“Curious?””
Linda sighed.
“She saw the documents while searching through your father’s office.””
My father’s expression changed.
“She knew?””
Linda nodded.
“She knew there was money.””
“And you both said nothing?””
Linda didn’t respond.
The silence was unbearable.
I thought about every insult.
Every time Mia called me lucky.
Every time she said I thought I was better.
She wasn’t jealous because I had more.
She was jealous because she knew I was supposed to have more.
My father stood.
“Where is the money?””
Linda looked nervous.
“It’s gone.””
My father froze.
“What?””
“I used some.””
“How much?””
She looked away.
“A portion.””
“How much?””
Her voice became smaller.
“Almost all of it.””
The room went silent.
My father stared at her.
“You stole from my daughter.””
Linda immediately defended herself.
“I used it for the family.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You used it for Mia.””
Linda’s face hardened.
“You have no idea what it’s like to watch your own child struggle.””
I looked at her.
“Mia had designer clothes.””
“That wasn’t the point.””
“You bought her everything.””
“Because she needed confidence.””
I almost laughed.
“And I didn’t?””
Linda had no answer.
That night, my father contacted the lawyer listed on my mother’s documents.
The lawyer arrived the next morning.
His name was Daniel Harris.
He was older, with silver hair and a calm voice.
He sat across from us at the dining table.
“I was instructed by your mother to contact you when you turned twenty-one.””
I looked confused.
“Why didn’t you?””
Daniel glanced at my father.
“Because someone changed the contact information.””
Everyone became still.
My father frowned.
“Who?””
Daniel opened a file.
“The request came from someone claiming to be your legal guardian.””
My stomach tightened.
“Linda.””
Daniel nodded.
“She told us you had chosen not to receive information.””
My father looked sick.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“However, there is something important.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“The trust wasn’t destroyed.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“The money was protected.””
I looked at Linda.
She went pale.
Daniel continued.
“Someone attempted to access it illegally six months ago.””
Six months.
The same time my scholarship changed.
The same time my savings started disappearing.
I whispered:
“Mia.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He opened another file.
“The person who attempted to access your trust was…”
He paused.
Then looked directly at my father.
“It was someone with your authorization.””
My father went completely silent.
I stared at him.
“Dad?””
He looked horrified.
“I never signed anything.””
Daniel slowly placed a copy of the document on the table.
A signature was at the bottom.
My father’s name.
And underneath it…
A second signature.
One I recognized immediately.
May you like
Because it belonged to the person who had spent years pretending to protect me.
Linda.
