Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Her Smile

Nobody spoke after my father’s footsteps disappeared upstairs.

The house that had always felt like Mia’s kingdom suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Linda stood frozen in the hallway.

Her phone was still in her hand, but she wasn’t looking at it anymore.

She was listening.

Waiting.

“What is he doing?”” I asked.

Linda didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Linda always had an answer.

She always knew how to twist situations until Mia looked innocent.

But now?

She looked nervous.

A crash came from upstairs.

Mia screamed again.

“Dad! Stop!””

I ran toward the stairs.

Linda grabbed my arm.

“Stay here.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

She released me immediately.

“I just mean… let him calm down.””

Calm down.

That was interesting.

Because when I was hurt, nobody ever told Mia to calm down.

When I cried, I was dramatic.

When Mia cried, the entire house stopped.

I walked upstairs anyway.

My father stood outside Mia’s bedroom door.

Inside, clothes were scattered across the floor.

Not normal clothes.

Expensive clothes.

Shoes still inside boxes.

Jewelry.

New handbags.

My father held a small black notebook.

Mia stood against the wall.

Her confidence was gone.

“Dad, give that back.””

My father looked at her.

“How long?””

She said nothing.

“How long have you been doing this?””

“Doing what?””

His expression hardened.

“Taking from people.””

My stomach dropped.

Mia looked at me.

Then quickly away.

“What are you talking about?””

My father opened the notebook.

“I found this hidden behind your closet.””

Mia’s face changed.

Inside were pages filled with names.

Dates.

Amounts of money.

My name appeared several times.

I stepped closer.

“What is that?””

My father looked at me.

“It’s a list.””

“A list of what?””

He handed me the notebook.

The first page had my name.

Beside it were numbers.

Small amounts.

$20.

$50.

$100.

My hands went cold.

“She took my money?””

Mia immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Linda.

That was the moment I understood.

Mia wasn’t scared because she had been caught.

She was scared because her backup plan wasn’t working.

Linda stepped forward.

“Maybe everyone should calm down.””

My father turned.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

And somehow, that was worse.

“You spent years telling me she was just young.””

Linda looked away.

“Because she is.””

“She is twenty-one.””

Silence.

My father pointed at the notebook.

“She stole from her sister.””

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t steal.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe she was saying it.

“You took money from my drawer.””

“I borrowed it.””

“You never asked.””

“I knew you would say no.””

My father stared at her.

“How much?””

Mia didn’t answer.

“How much did you take?””

“Dad…”

“How much?””

Her voice became smaller.

“About three thousand dollars.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

Three thousand dollars.

The money I had saved for textbooks.

The money I had saved for emergencies.

The money I earned while everyone else slept.

My father closed his eyes.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“You’re not upset because she ruined a dress.””

Mia looked confused.

“You’re upset because she finally exposed who you are.””

The room went silent.

That night, I sat on my bed holding the torn dress.

The graduation ceremony was hours away.

But I didn’t care anymore.

My dream morning had already ended.

Then my father came back into my room carrying the notebook.

“I need to tell you something,” he said.

I looked up.

“What?””

He sat beside me.

“I should have noticed sooner.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to tell him that apologies didn’t repair years of silence.

But then he said:

“There’s something else Mia did.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He placed a folded paper on my bed.

A bank statement.

May you like

With my name on it.

And a transaction I never made.
