Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The video froze.

Daniel’s face remained on the screen.

A face Emily had spent three years trying to remember without pain.

A face that belonged to birthday mornings, late-night conversations, and quiet moments when the world still felt safe.

Now that same face was trapped inside a tiny phone, surrounded by secrets and fear.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Until Hammer whispered one word.

“No.””

It wasn’t disbelief.

It was something deeper.

Something close to grief.

Emily looked at him.

“You know who that was.””

Hammer didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on the frozen reflection in the car window.

The figure behind Daniel was mostly hidden.

Only part of a face.

A shoulder.

A voice.

But Hammer knew.

She could see it.

“You know.””

Hammer slowly stepped away from the table.

“No.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Don’t do that.””

He looked at her.

“Do what?””

“Protect me from the truth.””

The words landed.

Because they were the same words she had been saying since she arrived.

Hammer looked down.

For years, he had carried secrets because he thought secrets could protect people.

Now he was realizing they had only left everyone alone in the dark.

“I thought he was dead.””

Emily’s breath caught.

“Who?””

Hammer didn’t answer immediately.

The bikers around him exchanged uneasy looks.

One of them, a tall man named Reggie, stepped forward.

“Hammer…”

Hammer raised a hand.

“No.””

His eyes remained on Emily.

“She deserves to know.””

The room became silent.

“His name was Isaiah.””

Emily waited.

Nothing.

She didn’t recognize it.

“Who is Isaiah?””

Hammer looked at the photograph.

“Someone Daniel and I knew a long time ago.””

“Someone dangerous?””

Hammer shook his head.

“That’s the problem.””

He looked back at her.

“He wasn’t always.””

Emily stared at him.

“Explain.””

Hammer pulled a chair from the table and sat down.

For the first time since she met him, he looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“Before Daniel met you, before he built a family, before he walked away from that life…”

Hammer paused.

“He had a brother.””

Emily frowned.

“You said you and Daniel weren’t brothers by blood.””

“We weren’t.””

Hammer looked at the floor.

“But Isaiah was.””

The room went still.

“Daniel had two brothers,” Hammer continued.

“One by blood.””

He looked at the frozen video.

“And one by choice.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Isaiah?””

Hammer nodded.

“Isaiah was older. Smarter. More patient.””

“That doesn’t sound dangerous.””

“It wasn’t.””

Hammer’s voice lowered.

“Until he started believing protecting people meant controlling them.””

Emily looked at the phone.

“And Daniel found out?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Hammer’s jaw tightened.

“Isaiah disappeared.””

“How?””

Hammer looked away.

“He was involved in an accident.””

Emily noticed the way he said it.

Not died.

An accident.

Not a death.

Something unfinished.

“Did he die?””

Hammer was silent.

Too long.

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know.””

“No.””

The answer shocked her.

“You spent years believing he was dead?””

Hammer nodded.

“Daniel believed it too.””

“And now?””

Hammer looked at the phone.

“Now I know we were wrong.””

A sudden noise came from outside.

Everyone froze.

The workshop fell silent.

A footstep.

Slow.

Heavy.

Approaching the door.

Hammer immediately stood.

Every biker in the room moved.

Emily pulled Noah closer.

The doorknob turned.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came from the other side.

“Daniel always said you were too stubborn to die, Hammer.””

Hammer went completely still.

Emily felt Noah grab her hand.

The voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

But Hammer looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Isaiah.””

The name came out barely above a whisper.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

And Emily understood immediately why Hammer had been shaken.

Because the man standing there was not a stranger.

He looked familiar.

Not because she had met him.

Because she had seen pieces of him before.

The same eyes as Daniel.

The same smile.

The same calm expression.

But something was different.

Something colder.

Isaiah Carter looked at Noah.

Then at Emily.

Then finally at Hammer.

“Twenty years.””

His voice was soft.

“You still look exactly the same.””

Hammer didn’t move.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Isaiah smiled slightly.

“So are you.””

Nobody spoke.

Emily’s heart pounded.

This man was Daniel’s brother.

The man in the video.

The man everyone thought was gone.

And he had walked into the room like he belonged there.

“Emily: Who are you?””

Isaiah looked at her.

The expression on his face changed.

For a moment, he looked genuinely sad.

“I’m the man who should have told you the truth.””

Hammer stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Isaiah ignored him.

“Daniel loved you very much.””

Emily froze.

The words sounded too personal.

“You knew me?””

Isaiah nodded.

“More than you think.””

Hammer’s voice became dangerous.

“You stay away from her.””

Isaiah looked at him.

“Still protecting everyone.””

Then he looked at Noah.

“And this must be him.””

Noah hid behind Emily.

Isaiah noticed.

A small flash of pain crossed his face.

“Daniel’s son.””

Emily stepped between them.

“Don’t come near him.””

Isaiah stopped.

“I understand.””

The fact that he listened made her even more nervous.

People like Marcus pushed.

People like Isaiah waited.

“I didn’t come here to hurt him.””

Hammer laughed coldly.

“Then why are you here?””

Isaiah looked at the wooden box.

“Because Daniel left something unfinished.””

Hammer’s expression changed.

“What?””

Isaiah pointed at the box.

“That was never meant to be opened by you.””

Everyone looked at Noah.

Emily immediately tightened her grip.

“Then who was it meant for?””

Isaiah looked at the boy.

“Noah.””

The room went silent.

Noah looked confused.

“Why me?””

Isaiah’s face softened.

“Because your father knew you would see things adults ignored.””

Emily felt uncomfortable.

The way he spoke about Noah.

Like he knew him.

Like he had been watching.

“How long have you been around us?””

Isaiah looked at her.

“Long enough.””

Hammer moved.

Quickly.

The bikers reacted.

But Isaiah didn’t flinch.

“I watched Daniel try to protect you.””

Hammer stopped.

“What are you saying?””

Isaiah looked at him.

“I’m saying Daniel wasn’t killed because of the secret.””

A pause.

“He was killed because he was going to reveal the person who started everything.””

Emily looked at the photograph.

“Michael?””

Isaiah shook his head.

“No.””

Hammer stared.

“Then who?””

Isaiah looked at the phone.

At Daniel’s frozen face.

Then he said:

“The person Daniel trusted more than anyone.””

Emily felt her stomach drop.

“No…”

Isaiah continued.

“The person who knew where Daniel hid the evidence.””

Hammer’s face hardened.

“Stop.””

But Isaiah didn’t.

“The person who helped plan his disappearance.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Emily shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Isaiah looked at her.

“Is it?””

Then he reached into his coat.

Everyone tensed.

But he pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“This was Daniel’s.””

Hammer stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

Isaiah looked at him.

“He gave it to me.””

Emily felt confused.

“But you said he was trying to reveal you.””

Isaiah nodded.

“He was.””

“Then why would he give you something?””

Isaiah looked at her.

“Because Daniel knew I wasn’t the enemy.””

Hammer stared.

“Then who was?””

Isaiah slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

A handwritten note.

Emily recognized the handwriting immediately.

Daniel’s.

Isaiah read the first line.

And everyone in the room stopped breathing.

Because Daniel had written:

“Emily, if Isaiah comes back, believe him.””

A silence followed.

Then Isaiah turned the paper around.

The next sentence was visible.

A sentence Daniel had written only days before he died.

“I finally know who betrayed us.””

Hammer stepped closer.

Emily stared.

Noah looked at the page.

And then Isaiah spoke the words Daniel had left behind.

“The person who destroyed our family…”

He looked directly at Hammer.

“…was never outside the family.””

The workshop door suddenly slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

Marcus was standing there.

And he was not alone.

Behind him were three men.

Isaiah looked at them.

Then smiled sadly.

“Too late.””

Hammer looked confused.

“For what?””

Isaiah looked at Noah.

“For him to know the truth.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Hand over the box.””

Hammer moved in front of Noah.

But Isaiah raised his hand.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Isaiah’s eyes became cold.

“Let him open it.””

Emily stared.

“Why?””

Isaiah looked at Noah.

“Because Daniel didn’t hide the truth from him.””

A pause.

“He hid it for him.””

And inside the wooden box, beneath the photographs and the old phone, something began to glow.

A tiny red light.

A recording device.

May you like

Waiting.

For Noah’s voice.
