Chapter 8: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The number worked.
That was the first surprise.
The second surprise was that someone answered.
I expected silence.
A disconnected line.
A dead end.
Instead, after three rings, a woman whispered:
“Hello?””
I froze.
Because even after six years…
Claire recognized the voice.
She covered her mouth.
“Emily?””
The woman on the phone went silent.
Then:
“Claire?””
My wife collapsed into the chair.
Tears filled her eyes.
“She’s alive.””
I looked at Michael.
Neither of us spoke.
The woman on the phone breathed shakily.
“I thought I would never hear your voice again.””
Claire cried.
“Where have you been?””
A long pause.
Then Emily answered:
“Running.””
The word carried years of pain.
I took the phone.
“Emily?””
Silence.
“Who is this?””
“My name is Daniel Carter.””
Another pause.
Then her voice changed.
“You’re Lily’s father.””
It wasn’t a question.
She knew.
“How?””
Emily sighed.
“Because I’ve been watching from a distance.””
My grip tightened.
“Watching?””
“I never stopped.””
I looked at Lily sleeping upstairs.
“What happened?””
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Your mother-in-law happened.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Emily continued.
“After Lily was born, I was struggling.””
Claire listened silently.
“I was young. I was scared. I had just left an abusive relationship, and I wasn’t stable.””
Her voice cracked.
“Margaret used that.””
“How?””
“She convinced me I was dangerous for my own child.””
Claire whispered:
“No.””
Emily continued.
“She told me Lily would be safer with Claire and Daniel.””
I looked at my wife.
“And Claire agreed?””
“No.””
Emily’s answer came quickly.
“Claire wanted to help me.””
Claire looked surprised.
“I did.””
Emily continued.
“But Margaret didn’t.””
A pause.
“She forged documents.””
My jaw tightened.
“She changed the story.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Emily’s voice became colder.
“Because she wanted control.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
Margaret didn’t just want Lily.
She wanted power over everyone.
“She told me if I fought back, she would ruin Claire’s life.””
Claire started crying.
“She threatened me.””
Emily answered:
“She threatened all of us.””
I walked to the window.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Emily was quiet.
Then:
“Because every time I tried, Margaret made sure I saw proof that I would lose.””
“What proof?””
“Fake reports. Fake accusations. Messages saying Claire hated me.””
Claire covered her face.
“She made us enemies.””
“Yes.””
I looked upstairs.
At the little girl who had spent years thinking she had no voice.
“I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Why did Margaret file custody papers now?””
Emily didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Emily.””
Finally:
“Because she knows I’m coming back.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She found out I contacted someone.””
“Who?””
“You.””
Silence.
Emily continued.
“She’s afraid the truth will come out.””
I looked at Michael.
The evidence.
The recordings.
The hospital records.
Everything.
But something still didn’t make sense.
“Why would she risk a custody case?””
Emily sighed.
“Because she has always believed she can control the outcome.””
Then she said something that changed everything.
“She has done this before.””
My blood ran cold.
“What do you mean?””
“She didn’t just destroy my life.””
A pause.
“She did it to someone else.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
Emily whispered:
“Your father.””
I froze.
My father had been dead for ten years.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Emily’s voice shook.
“Your father discovered what Margaret was doing.””
I felt the room disappear.
“And?””
“She made sure nobody believed him.””
My chest tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your father wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””
I remembered.
The arguments.
The family stories.
The way everyone described my father as paranoid before he died.
But I had never questioned it.
Because I trusted the people around me.
The same people who lied about Lily.
“Where are you?””
Emily hesitated.
“Close.””
“Tell me.””
“I’m not ready.””
I almost laughed.
“After six years?””
“I’m scared.””
That stopped me.
Because fear had been the weapon Margaret used against everyone.
Emily continued:
“She doesn’t just threaten people.””
“What does she do?””
“She destroys them.””
The call ended suddenly.
I stared at the phone.
Then it rang again.
A message appeared.
Not from Emily.
From Margaret.
A photo.
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
It was Lily.
Sleeping upstairs.
Taken minutes ago.
Underneath was a message.
*You should have left the past buried.*
I looked toward the stairs.
Someone had been inside my house.
May you like
Someone had been watching.
And they were close.
