Chapter 7: The Truth Buried Six Years Ago

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Not me.

Not Claire.

Not Michael.

Even Lily seemed to understand that whatever came next was something adults had been hiding for a very long time.

I stared at my brother.

“The story I was told?””

Michael nodded slowly.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Believe what?””

He looked at Claire.

Then away.

“I found the records three years ago.””

Three years.

The words hit harder than I expected.

“You knew something about my daughter for three years?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I was trying to figure out the truth.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You were trying to decide whether I deserved to know.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew I was right.

I looked at Claire.

“Did you know?””

Her face changed instantly.

A mixture of fear and confusion.

“Know what?””

I pointed at Michael.

“This.””

She looked at him.

Then back at me.

“I swear I don’t know what he’s talking about.””

Michael reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folder.

The same kind of folder that had already ruined too much of my life.

He placed it on the table.

“I found this in the hospital archives.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Why were you looking?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he answered:

“Because I noticed something.””

“What?””

“Lily doesn’t look like Claire.””

The room became silent.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Not because of the words.

Because of what they suggested.

Michael continued.

“And I noticed you never questioned it.””

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting on the couch, holding her stuffed rabbit.

She didn’t understand.

She shouldn’t have to.

“Say what you’re trying to say.””

Michael opened the folder.

“The records show there was a mistake at the hospital.””

Claire stood immediately.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“Claire?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know what he found.””

Michael looked at her.

“You do.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Claire started crying.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?””

She covered her mouth.

Then whispered:

“Lily’s original birth records were changed.””

The room tilted.

“What?””

Michael looked down.

“The baby records were switched.””

I stared.

“No.””

I couldn’t accept it.

I didn’t want to.

“Are you saying Lily isn’t my daughter?””

Claire broke down.

“No.””

She rushed toward me.

“Daniel, no. That’s not what I’m saying.””

I stepped back.

“Then explain.””

She wiped her tears.

“Lily is your daughter.””

I looked at Michael.

He nodded.

“She is.””

“Then what was changed?””

Michael took a breath.

“The identity of her biological mother.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at Claire.

“What?””

Her face collapsed.

“I found out when Lily was two.””

I couldn’t speak.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I found out after a hospital review.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was scared.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone in this house was scared.””

I pointed around the room.

“And my daughter paid the price.””

Claire cried harder.

“I thought it would destroy us.””

I stared at her.

“You let me raise a child while hiding the truth?””

“She is your daughter.””

“That’s not the point!””

My voice echoed through the house.

Lily jumped.

I immediately lowered it.

I looked at her.

“Sorry, baby.””

She nodded.

But I saw the fear return.

The fear everyone else had put there.

Michael spoke quietly.

“The woman who gave birth to Lily…”

I turned.

“Who?””

He looked at Claire.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“My sister.””

I froze.

I knew Claire had a sister.

But she had died before I met her.

That was what I had always been told.

“My sister, Emily.””

The name felt unfamiliar.

“But she died.””

Claire looked down.

“That’s the other lie.””

The room went completely still.

“What?””

Michael answered.

“Emily didn’t die.””

I stared.

“No.””

“She disappeared.””

I felt like the walls were moving.

“Why?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Claire whispered:

“Because my mother made sure nobody looked for her.””

My blood ran cold.

Margaret.

Again.

Everything came back to her.

The records.

The custody case.

The cameras.

The manipulation.

She wasn’t just controlling the present.

She had been rewriting the past.

“Where is Emily now?””

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Michael looked at the folder.

“But someone does.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Margaret.””

I grabbed my jacket.

Claire stood.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“For six years, your mother controlled the truth about my daughter.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m done letting her.””

I turned toward Lily.

She looked scared.

I walked over and knelt beside her.

“Baby.””

She looked at me.

“Are you leaving?””

The question stopped me.

Because it wasn’t really about leaving.

It was about every person she had trusted disappearing.

I held her hand.

“No.””

“Promise?””

I nodded.

“I promise.””

Then I looked at Claire.

“Find your mother.””

She swallowed.

“And if she refuses?””

I picked up the folder.

“Then we find Emily.””

That night, we discovered something hidden inside the records.

A phone number.

Written on the back of an old document.

A number Michael had never called.

A number that belonged to the one person who could finally explain everything.

May you like

Emily Carter.

The woman everyone said was gone.
