Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Father’s Family

My father ended the call without saying goodbye.

That scared me more than if he had shouted.

Adrian Kane was never silent when he was angry.

Silence meant he was thinking.

And when my father thought carefully, people usually regretted what happened next.

We left the school twenty minutes later.

I sat in the back seat of his SUV while a doctor examined my damaged prosthetic. My father sat across from me, staring out the window.

Usually, he filled every quiet moment.

He asked about my homework.

He asked about my friends.

He asked if I wanted ice cream.

That day, he said nothing.

“Daddy?””

He looked at me immediately.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is Uncle Damian the reason this happened?””

His face softened.

“I don’t know yet.””

“But you think he did.””

My father looked away.

“That is what scares me.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

He took a long breath.

“Because your uncle knows me.””

The doctor finished checking the damage and stepped away.

“The prosthetic can be repaired, but it will take some time.””

My father nodded.

“Do whatever you need.””

After the doctor left, I held the broken strap in my hand.

“Daddy.””

“Yes?””

“Were you angry because they hurt me?””

His expression changed.

“Of course.””

“Or because they embarrassed you?””

The question surprised him.

For a moment, he looked hurt.

Then he moved closer.

“Never think that.””

His voice was quiet.

“You are not something I own. You are my daughter. The most important person in my life.””

I looked down.

“Then why does everyone always say you’re dangerous?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Because I already knew the answer.

The rumors were true.

My father had built an empire.

Not the kind people saw on television.

The kind built through fear, loyalty, and secrets.

But with me, he was different.

He was just Dad.

The SUV stopped outside our home.

Before we entered, Marco approached my father.

“Boss.””

My father looked at him.

“What?””

“We found something else.””

I watched his expression change.

“What?””

Marco handed him a folder.

My father opened it.

I couldn’t see everything.

But I saw one name.

Mine.

“Why is my name on that file?”” I asked.

My father closed it immediately.

“Go inside, sweetheart.””

That answer frightened me.

“Daddy.””

He looked at me.

“Please.””

It was the first time he had ever asked me like that.

Not ordered.

Asked.

So I walked inside.

But I didn’t go upstairs.

I hid near the hallway.

I knew it was wrong.

But something inside me told me I needed to hear.

My father and Marco entered the office.

The door didn’t close completely.

“Tell me everything,” my father said.

Marco’s voice was low.

“The attack at school wasn’t only about revenge.””

“What do you mean?””

“Damian was searching for information about your daughter.””

My heart stopped.

My father became silent.

“Why?””

Marco hesitated.

“Because of the accident three years ago.””

I covered my mouth.

The accident.

The one that took my leg.

The one everyone said was just a terrible crash.

My father’s voice changed.

“What did you find?””

Marco answered.

“The crash report was altered.””

My breathing stopped.

“No.””

“Yes, boss.””

A long silence.

Then my father whispered.

“Who changed it?””

Marco placed something on the desk.

“A signature.””

My father looked.

Then he said one word.

A word filled with disbelief.

“Damian.””

I stepped backward.

The floor creaked.

Both men stopped talking.

The office door opened.

My father saw me.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then his entire expression changed.

“Sweetheart…”

I wiped my tears.

“You knew?””

He immediately walked toward me.

“No.””

“Did you know Uncle Damian caused the accident?””

His face broke.

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me something was wrong?””

He stopped.

Because he had no answer.

Finally, he knelt.

“Because I spent three years trying to protect you from the truth.””

I shook my head.

“But the truth still found me.””

My father looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for me.

Then Marco’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed instantly.

“Boss.””

My father stood.

“What?””

Marco looked at me.

Then at him.

“The hospital records from the night of the accident…”

He swallowed.

“They found another name listed as the person who approved your daughter’s emergency surgery.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Whose name?””

Marco looked down at the screen.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Adrian Kane.””
