Chapter 12: The Truth Beneath the House

The estate looked exactly how I imagined a haunted house would look.

Old.

Silent.

Full of memories that refused to disappear.

My father walked inside first.

Every step seemed heavier than the last.

I stayed close behind him.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I knew he was.

The man everyone feared was walking into the one place where he had once been powerless.

“Mother?”” he called.

No answer.

Marco and the security team searched the rooms.

I followed my father through the hallway.

The walls were covered with old family pictures.

My father as a child.

Damian beside him.

My grandmother smiling between them.

A perfect family.

A fake one.

“You loved them.””

My father looked at the pictures.

“Yes.””

“Even Damian?””

He nodded.

“He was my brother.””

I looked at him.

“Do you still love him?””

My father was quiet.

Then he answered:

“I don’t know.””

That hurt more than anger.

We entered his father’s old office.

Everything was untouched.

Books.

Desk.

Old photographs.

Then my father stopped.

“What?””

He walked toward a painting on the wall.

He touched the frame.

“There used to be a safe here.””

“Used to?””

“Yes.””

He removed the painting.

Behind it was an empty space.

Someone had already opened it.

Marco searched the room.

“Boss.””

He picked up a small envelope.

My father took it.

Inside was a letter.

He read the first line.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

The handwriting was old.

But clear.

My dearest Adrian,

If you are reading this, then someone has already tried to use your family against you.

I felt a chill.

My grandfather had written this before he died.

The letter continued.

You were always the son who carried responsibility. Damian was always the son who carried resentment.

I looked at my father.

He kept reading.

But there was one thing I never told you.

The accident involving your daughter was not the first attempt.

My breath stopped.

Not the first?

My father continued.

Years before, Damian tried to remove you from the company. He failed because you survived every challenge.

But when your daughter was born, I knew he found your weakness.

My father’s hands trembled.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

The person who helped Damian was not your mother.

My father looked up.

“What?””

The room went silent.

My grandfather’s letter continued.

Your mother believes she is protecting Damian. She does not know the full truth.

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

My father kept reading.

Damian has been manipulating her for years.

She is guilty.

But she is not the person controlling this.

Marco stepped forward.

“Boss.””

My father finished the letter.

Then he looked completely lost.

“What?””

I asked.

He handed me the page.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

The person behind Damian has always been closer than you think.

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Not my grandmother.

Not Damian.

Someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had been helping my father search for the truth.

My father’s security chief.

The man who had worked beside him for fifteen years.

Marco.

My father stared.

“Explain.””

Marco’s face was emotionless.

And then he slowly removed his jacket.

Underneath was a small symbol.

A family symbol.

Not Kane.

Another one.

My father stepped back.

“No.””

Marco looked at him.

“I’m sorry, boss.””

My father’s voice was barely a whisper.

“You were with me that night.””

“Yes.””

“You saved my daughter.””

Marco looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Marco lowered his eyes.

“Because saving her was never part of the plan.””

The room went silent.

I felt my father move beside me.

Protecting me.

Even now.

Marco looked directly at him.

“The person who ordered the accident…”

He paused.

“And the person who ordered the attack at the school…”

His eyes shifted to me.

“Are the same person.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Who?””

Marco answered quietly.

“Your father-in-law.””

My father froze.

I froze.

Because my mother had been gone for years.

And everyone thought her family had nothing to do with this.

Then Marco said the name.

May you like

The name that changed everything.

“Your wife’s father.””
